Our Introduction

Lake Iseo has a glacial origin, that is, it was formed by the melting waters of the mountains. Thus, this wonder of nature is a fundamental part of the Franciacorta territory. Some of the most prestigious sparkling wines in all of Italy, and we can say the world, are produced there.

It is certainly a great option for a tour to do on a day trip from Milan. After all, this destination is located about an hour’s drive from the center of Milan. It is a charming place with options for wine tastings, gastronomy and an enchanting view of Lake Iseo. Read also: Typical Milanese foods.

First of all, do you know the wines of this region?

The Franciacorta wine appellation covers the entire length south of Lake Iseo. The lake is responsible for moderating the temperature and offering the ideal conditions for the ripening of the grapes, that is, it is extremely important for the territory and for the wine producers. Since the lake is a large body of water, it concentrates the sun’s heat during the day and warms the vineyards on cold nights. Read also: Where to find an aperitif in Milan?

Franciacorta DOCG sparkling wine can be produced with the grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco, and Erbamat (a local variety). It is an elegant, delicate, and refreshing sparkling wine. It follows the traditional method of production, with the second fermentation in the bottle, the same as in Champagne. That’s why a glass of Franciacorta DOCG goes perfectly with this slow travel tour.

Some Wineries in the Region

In addition to the options of tastings in historic wineries such as Berlucchi, where the first Franciacorta was born at the hands of winemaker Franco Ziliani, there are also options in family wineries such as Faccoli, or with author architecture and art exhibitions such as Ca’Del Bosco.

Your experience can be designed with total exclusivity. It is also worth remembering that the region has excellent restaurants and award-winning cuisine. For example, the Michelin-starred Due Colombe Restaurant  is close to the Berlucchi Winery.

My Tasting Advice

The suggestion for this day trip from Milan would be to enjoy a visit with tasting at a winery, have lunch at one of the great restaurants and in the afternoon enjoy a view of the lake from Monte Isola, an island in the middle of Lake Iseo. Read also: Cooking Courses in Milan.

Inquisitiveness

Did you know that Mount Isola is the largest inhabited island in European lakes?

Do you want to visit Monte Isola?

Mount Isola is pure charm; to get there, the route is made via traghetto (the official boat for the crossing) from the city of Sulzano. The short trip that lasts about 10 minutes already turns into a wonderful walk to look at, the landscape is really beautiful.

Attractions in Monte Isola

There you will find charming narrow streets, colorful and flowery houses, local handicrafts and a lot of Italian culture. Be sure to try one of the typical dishes, which is the risotto al franciacorta, as well as fish from the lake, so on your way, the scent of the lake will be everywhere. Olive oils and honey are also produced on the island, so you will appreciate several olive trees gracing the landscape by the lake.

So if you like hiking, there are routes to discover the history of this island that dates back to Roman times, when vineyards, chestnut trees, and olive trees were cultivated.

The Importance of Lake Iseo

Once again, the presence of Lake Iseo is fundamental for local agriculture, as its waters accumulate heat, it creates an ideal microclimate, especially for the cultivation of olive trees. Just to illustrate, imagine that fragments of olive leaves dating back to 2,000 B.C. were found on Mount Isola.

Today olive oil is produced under the D.O.P. Dei Laghi Lombardi (Protected Designation of Origin of the Lombard Lakes). A delicate, yellow olive oil with golden reflections and aromas of almonds and aromatic herbs, its lightness harmonizes with various dishes such as fish condiments, appetizers, vegetables and salads.

In addition to Monte Isola, there are many interesting towns to visit around the Lake. We start with Iseo, located 82 kilometers from the center of Milan. It is the capital of the Lake Iseo region, the busiest and most touristic, and full of elegant shops, numerous restaurants, but still retains a beautiful artistic heritage.

Points of interest in the city of Iseo

For history and art lovers, Iseo offers great discoveries such as these, for example:

Piazza Garibaldi, the beating heart of the city, surrounded by arcaded buildings, is home to the first monument erected in Italy in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi

  • Oldofredi Castle, an ancient fortress with an imposing stone structure that dominates the city, is located south of the historic center, The building had the dual purpose of strategic fortress and military control of the territory.
  • Sanctuary Madonna della Neve, is located right behind the Oldofredi castle. In this place, there was a large Roman villa from the second century A.D.; today, it houses the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve. The fresco of the Virgin and St. Anthony inside the Sanctuary is considered miraculous.
  • The Church of Sant’Andrea, located in the heart of the historic center of Iseo, immediately impresses with its great visual impact and artistic value, it is believed that the church of Sant’Andrea was founded in the sixth century by Bishop San Vigilio, where there was once a Roman temple.

How about getting to know another city in the Lake Iseo region?

Another town worth visiting in the Lake Iseo region is Sarnico, you will be enchanted by the tranquility of this town. Departing from Milan, the route is 75km long and takes about 1:15 minutes to cover.

In Sarnico it is possible to admire an original nucleus of Art Nouveau buildings designed by the Milanese architect Giuseppe Sommaruga, such as the Villa Giuseppe Faccanoni, This style presents architecture with elegant sinuous lines and floral inspirations.  In addition, the landscape overlooking the lake is very inspiring. Sarnico is perfect for those who want to spend a quiet afternoon, go hiking or play sports on the shores of Lake Iseo.
