Our Introduction

Emilia Romagna enchants, above all, for its rich landscape: seaside resorts, mountains and plains coexist in a perfectly natural and well-mixed way . From Piacenza to Rimini, there are many interesting towns and villages to explore. Formed by a pair of similar historical regions, like the name itself, but different, it was divided until the advent of the unification of Italy. Understand a little about this division…

The eastern part is Romagna, which was part of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages, and the other part of the region is Emilia, which was for much of the period divided into small independent states. The main cities in the region are almost all along the Via Emilia, which is an important artery of communication that starts in Rimini and follows the entire Apennine chain. Along this Roman road are Parma, Bologna, and other cities, off this road are Ferrara and Ravenna.

Emilia Romagna region : VISIT BOLOGNA!

We start this itinerary from the regional capital, that is, Bologna , where you can

disembark at Bologna Airport, which is officially called Guglielmo Marconi Airport , which is the main airport in the Emilia Romagna region .

A little about Bologna

City of great historical interest, where the greatest civilizations of all time passed through its territory, such as the Etruscans, the Celts, and the Romans, becoming the center of culture in a short space of time, which, not by chance, has as one of his Bologna nicknames ‘La Dotta’. This is thanks to its university, which is definitely one of the oldest. Click here and see the options for unmissable group tours around Bologna!

Emilia Romagna region : VISIT PARMA!

After visiting Bologna, it is easy to reach another city worth noting, Parma , with an

ancient history where you can see the first human settlements dating back to the Bronze Age.

Attractions in Parma

When visiting Parma you cannot miss the wonderful view offered by Piazza Duomo , where the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Bishop’s Palace are located , which creates a medieval corner of rare beauty. The Cathedral is one of the highest expressions of Padan Romanesque architecture, with a beautiful facade and a Latin cross. The interior is rich in famous works of art, such as the dome with frescoes by Correggio. Also in the cathedral square is the Baptistery , another example of Romanesque architecture that is very special because it was built in pink marble from Verona.

Parma, could not fail to pay tribute to the opera, with the Teatro Regio, musical symbol of the city and the marble and granite monument dedicated to Verdi. We continue our visit to Parma admiring the Doge’s Palace , a 16th century building, surrounded by a beautiful green space where you can take a break for a rest. A little about Ferrara

Ferrara was ruled for three centuries by the Este family , who were the main architects of present-day Ferrara. Thanks to the Este family, Ferrara was the first modern city in Europe, which is why UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site.

Attractions in Ferrara

Its Historic center is full of true wonders , such as the Municipal Palace , Este’s main house. Fascinating are Ferrara’s nine kilometers of city walls , practically unchanged, which allow tourists to feel transported back in time.

How not to mention the Estense Castle , which is the symbol of the city of Ferrara, or

the many civil and religious buildings in the city, such as Palazzo della Schifanoi , Il Palazzo di Ludovico – il Moro, Palazzo dei Diamanti, while among the churches are Saint Benedict , Saint Francis, Santa Maria in Vado, San Cristoforo alla Certosa, and, of course, Saint George’s Cathedral . Ravenna is considered one of the most interesting cities of art to visit in Italy, many people are unaware of the treasures hidden in this pearl of Emilia Romagna , which has eight monuments recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . Furthermore, this is the place where the tomb of Dante Alihieri , the father of the Italian language, is located .

Attractions in Ravenna

You can start by visiting the Basilica of San Vitale , an octagonal temple that is among the most important monuments of early Christian art. In this Basilica, one of the most beautiful things there is to admire is its beautiful mosaics and the tomb of Dante Alighieri , who died in Ravenna during his exile from his beloved hometown, Florence .

Another Basilica worth visiting is Sant’Apollinare in Classe , which is among the most impressive churches in this city; here there is an image of Christ with the four evangelists. At this point, you cannot miss the so-called Palace of Theodoric, , what remains of the old Church of San Salvatore, with architecture that dates back to the Gothic period. Of course, these are just some of the options for you to visit in Ravenna.

Emilia Romagna region : VISIT RIMINI AND THE ROMAGNOLA RIVIERA

When you go to Emilia Romagna, it is vital to remember Rimini and the Riviera Romagnola, the highlights of this region, which each year attracts a large share of Italian resort tourism. But you should know that there are not only beaches and nightlife. The Adriatic Coast, and especially in Rimini , is full of churches to visit.

Attractions in Rimini

Rimini is known for its seaside nightclubs and shallow beaches. But a must-see, south of the center, is the Malatestiano Temple , which was originally a Franciscan monastery, and was later transformed into his personal mausoleum by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, a local nobleman. Nearby, Castel Sismondo, built by Malatesta, is a medieval fortress now used for cultural events.

Attractions on the Romagnola Riviera

If you are thinking about a holiday of sun, sea and lots of fun, then you are definitely thinking about coming to the Riviera Romagnola .

When it comes to holidays on the Adriatic coast, what tourists really want is pure fun, but not only that, holidays here also mean being able to take advantage of some very special relaxation. It’s good to know that gastronomic and wine tourism are evolving here.
