Our Introduction
When you come to Italy, there’s no point in being in a hurry. The ‘bel Paese‘ is best seen slowly, savoring its language and its way of expressing itself. So, enjoy the tour, enjoying it in full relaxation, maybe even having a bite to eat with a cappuccino and a cornet (croissant). When you go to a foreign country, it’s always good to have information about your destination. Especially, try to find out about the habits and customs of the local people to avoid possible inconveniences. So be sure to check out our post: Cultural Differences between Southern and Northern Italy.
1) Tip for traveling in Italy: ORGANIZE YOUR ITINERARY WELL!
Try not to do or see too many things; this is one of the mistakes that many people make. Trying to see the whole country at once and deciding to see “everything” of the major cities in one day – you can’t do that. You have to focus on a few things and see them well. Set aside enough time so that you can also relax during the holidays. Read the post: How many days do I need to visit Italy?
Another thing to do is to try to visit not only the wonderful tourist towns but also their surroundings. For example, the villages, which will surprise you with their natural beauty and their millennial traditions that are no longer seen in many big cities, will enrich both you and them, establishing the infamous cultural exchange (in fact, this is one of the main reasons why you take a trip). For those of you who want to get to know Italy, I have prepared some tips and suggestions that will be very useful on your trip. Be sure to read: Best itineraries in Italy.
2) Tip for traveling in Italy: KNOW WHAT THE ELECTRICITY IS IN ITALY!
In Italy, the electrical voltage has a voltage of 220 volts and is distributed by alternating current, according to European standards. Most hotels provide adapters for specific outlets; In any case, inform yourself and provide such a resource. Read also: Types of Sockets in Italy!
3) Tip for traveling in Italy: SAVE MONEY BY DRINKING WATER FROM THE TAPS!
Can you drink tap water? ABSOLUTELY! In Italy, the supply of drinking water is guaranteed throughout the national territory. You can calmly drink the water that comes out of the taps and drinking fountains, as it is periodically controlled.
When the water is not drinkable, there will be a warning indicating that if not, you can fill the water bottle in any drinking fountain throughout Italy (there are so many and some even beautiful). Since the water is good to drink, avoid buying new bottles, especially in the most “famous” cities, as it can be expensive. Do you need more information? Get to know our Food in Italy Section.

4) Tip for traveling in Italy: STAY ON TOP OF STORE HOURS IN ITALY!
Shops in Italy are usually open from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and then from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, but shopping centres and department stores always have extended hours (from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm or 10:00 pm). On some Sundays during the year, especially in large cities, shopping malls also remain open.
In Italy, there is not yet a culture of opening shops every day. As mentioned before, Italians love to enjoy life, and this behavior happens mainly in the center-south of the country. Get to know our Shopping Section in Italy.
Pharmacies
Pharmacies follow business hours (from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.); however, in the capitals, there are pharmacies open 24 hours a day for any night emergencies, following a rotation system. When the pharmacy is closed, outside there will be a sign with opening hours and information about the nearest drugstore.
5) Tip for traveling in Italy: PAY ATTENTION TO MEAL TIMES IN ITALY!
What are the meal times in Italy? In Italy, breakfast is usually eaten at 7:00 a.m.; in hotels it is common to serve coffee until 10:00 a.m. (after that time, it is not possible to order the meal). In the restaurants, lunch runs from 12:30 to 14:30, and dinner is served from 19:30 to 23:00. These times are approximate and can vary a lot; in the North Zone, one tends to anticipate the announced times, and in the South, it is common to stretch meals until late. 6) Italy Travel Tip: SEARCH FOR THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO ITALY!
What is the worst time to visit Italy? August is NOT a good month to travel, as most Italians are on vacation and almost everything is closed. In addition, it is also difficult to find vacancies in hotels and inns, among other forms of accommodation, and prices are very high, unless you have booked in advance, so avoid this month! Not to mention that it’s the hottest month! I do not recommend it for children, people in old age, or people with health problems. 7) Tip for traveling in Italy: ENJOY THE GASTRONOMY!
One of the best food cultures in the world! Italy offers one of the best food cultures on earth; you can eat well anywhere in the country. However, when we see the menu, we must pay attention to the inclusion of the cover charge, as an extra fee is charged that varies from restaurant to restaurant (on average, two euros). This extra is usually indicated at the bottom of the menu, so you won’t be surprised when they bring you the bill. Read also: How to read and understand a menu in Italian?
In Italy, you can’t refuse a good artisanal ice cream – in fact, it’s a pleasure you’ll never want to refuse. A scoop of ice cream can turn even that disgruntled tourist into a calm and relaxed local. Eat ice cream as often as you can! Get to know our Transportation in Italy Section!
8) Tip for traveling in Italy: KNOW ALL ABOUT TIPPING IN ITALY!
How does tipping work in Italy? Tipping is not mandatory. In Italy, there are no consolidated rules regarding gratuities, but it is common to leave a few bucks (around 10% of the amount of the bill) if the customer is satisfied with the service provided. However, it is not a rule, as can happen in other European countries. Read also: How to behave in Italy?
9) Tip for traveling in Italy: LEARN HOW TO TAKE A TAXI IN ITALY!
How to get a taxi in Italy? You can’t stop a cab in the middle of the street – it’s even fun when Americans do it. Be wary of anyone who approaches you and tries to convince you to get in the car. Authorized taxi drivers are parked at their station, a place delimited by the yellow stripes on the ground and marked with the “TAXI” sign. In any case, it is more advisable to get around by public transport (such as the metro) or on foot. Read also: Apps in Italy to call a taxi.
