A little more about Limone Sul Garda
The area where Limone sul Garda is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of human presence dating back to the Bronze Age. During the Roman period, the region was known for its agricultural activities and olive oil production. However, specific records about Limone during this period are scarce.
17th and 18th centuries
During the 17th and 18th centuries, lemons arrived! It was during the 17th and 18th centuries that Limone sul Garda began to stand out for its lemon cultivation. The “lemonaries” (limonaie) were introduced around 1640, thanks to the mild climate of the region, which allowed the cultivation of citrus fruits. These lemonries were stone structures built on terraces on the slopes of the mountains, protected by walls and glass roofs during the colder months. Lemon production became an important source of income for the town, and Limone gained a reputation for its high-quality lemons.
In the 19th century
In the 19th century, Limone sul Garda remained an isolated and peaceful community, accessible mainly by boat. The construction of the Gardesana road, which circles the lake, in the mid-20th century connected Limone to other towns around Lake Garda, facilitating access and the development of tourism.
In 1979, Limone sul Garda gained worldwide notoriety when a rare genetic mutation was discovered in some of its inhabitants. This mutation, known as Apolipoprotein A-1 Milano, is associated with extremely low levels of cardiovascular disease. The discovery attracted the attention of scientists and brought unexpected fame to the small town.
Limone today
Today, Limone sul Garda is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning scenery, mild climate and historic charm. Visitors come from all over the world to explore its picturesque streets, visit the ancient lemon groves and enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Garda. The town’s economy is largely supported by tourism, with many restaurants, hotels and shops catering to visitors.
Despite the development of tourism, Limone sul Garda has managed to preserve much of its authentic character and traditions. The town continues to celebrate its agricultural roots and lemon production, keeping alive the cultural heritage that distinguishes it.
