Often described as a living painting, Positano is a unique sensory experience, where charming architecture blends with panoramic views and the scent of the Mediterranean fills the air. Discover the magic of Positano with us, from its winding streets to its crystal-clear beaches. Come with me, because today I have a VERY SPECIAL companion: Jake Leal!
Jake is a travel columnist and influencer who specializes in luxury and adventure travel. It was with her that we explored all the beauties of Positano. Our trip took us through several small towns, and I got to meet the real Jake, away from the spotlight. And to my surprise: she is who she is in any situation! Kind, good-natured, fun, affectionate. How lucky to live with this woman and experience such delightful moments!
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast depends on your personal interests and preferences, but consider the following:
- Summer (June to August): Ideal if you want to enjoy the warm weather, beaches and vibrant nightlife, but be prepared for crowds and higher prices.
- Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): These are the ideal times to avoid the crowds, enjoy pleasant temperatures and explore the region at a leisurely pace. Spring is especially beautiful with the vegetation in all its splendor.
- Winter (December to January): If you prefer a quieter experience, with lower prices and don’t mind the colder weather, winter is a good choice, but be warned: many establishments may be closed! (February is best avoided).
Let’s go to Positano!
As you drive down the winding roads of the Amalfi Coast, a breathtaking view emerges, revealing the picturesque and vertiginous Positano. This jewel of Italy, dramatically situated on rocky slopes that plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, is an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking charm, beauty and authentic Italian hospitality.
The Arrival: A Spectacle of Colors and Shapes

Fornillo Beach: A Serene Haven
Walking along the steps and alleys (a climb up and down that is worth it), travelers soon discover the serenity and beauty of Spiaggia di Fornillo, less crowded than the main beach, Spiaggia Grande or Spiaggia di Marina Grande (photo on the side).
This secluded cove is a peaceful retreat in the shade of the cliffs, here you will find good facilities and no noise, that is, perfect for relaxing from the hustle and bustle. With its crystal clear waters, this pebble beach is surrounded by colorful houses and a relaxed atmosphere. Spiaggia di Fornillo offers a perfect place to enjoy the Italian sun in relative tranquility.
Location: Spiaggia Fornillo is a 550-meter walk from Spiaggia di Marina Grande.
Important: To enjoy the beach, I recommend wearing rubber shoes, because the beach is all pebbles.
In addition to the main beaches, you can explore hidden coves and caves around Positano, many of which are accessible by boat. A boat trip along the coast is a charming way to admire the rock formations carved by the sea and discover secluded spots for swimming and snorkeling.
The Santa Maria Assunta Church: Art and Devotion
Positano is dotted with historical and cultural sites, and the Santa Maria Assunta Church is a must-see. Its multicolored dome and majestic bell tower are unmistakable symbols of the town. Inside, travelers are greeted by the Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna, a piece of sacred art that echoes centuries of devotion and tradition.
The most striking feature of the church is the dome, which displays a stunning ceramic mosaic. This mosaic is a representation of the “Madonna Nera,” or Black Madonna, who is the patron saint of Positano. The image of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child is surrounded by a frame of blue, green, and yellow tiles, creating a spectacular and memorable sight.
Inside the church, you will find a serene and elegant environment, with frescoes that tell religious stories and a décor that reflects the Catholic devotion of the local community. The church is an active place of worship for the inhabitants of Positano and also welcomes visitors and pilgrims who wish to appreciate its beauty and history.
The Path of the Gods: A Panoramic Journey
For nature and hiking lovers, the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is a spectacular trail that connects Positano to Agerola, offering unparalleled panoramic views. Surrounded by the region’s lush vegetation, this ancient path winds through the hills, revealing the splendor of the coast and offering a unique view of the rugged geography of the Amalfi Coast. The tour lasts on average 3 hours and covers approximately 7.8 km. The level of difficulty is easy, however, if you suffer from vertigo, avoid it!!!!
Important!
- Although the route is easy for everyone, remember to always bring comfortable clothing, trekking shoes with non-slip soles, sunglasses, sunscreen, raincoat, backpack, water bottle and trekking poles.
Positano Cuisine: A Feast for the Senses
Positano is a paradise for Italian food enthusiasts. The seaside restaurants offer local dishes that highlight fresh seafood, artisanal pasta and local olive oils. Indulge in delicacies such as scialatielli ai frutti di mare (fresh pasta with seafood) while watching the sun set over the calm waters of the Mediterranean.

How to get to Positano?
I will list here some transportation options to get to Positano, using Sorrento as your base city for your stay. It is very important to know that public transportation in this region of the Amalfi Coast is very bad, especially regarding buses.
Unfortunately, the buses take a long time and when they arrive at the arrival and departure points they are always full, especially in the summer!!!!! I warn you that it is super stressful!!! That is why I do not include this option, because most of my clients complain about the experience! It is not worth it!!!! Waste of time and quality of the tour.
How to get to Positano? BY CAR
With a rental car you will have to worry about: the ZTL, the chaotic traffic, which is very annoying in high season and the winding curves of the Amalfi Coast.
Parking in Positano
Parking is terrible here, most parking lots are far from the center, since traffic there is restricted; Another thing: avoid driving between 8:00 and 10:00 and between 16:00 and 18:00, especially during high season and on Saturdays and Sundays: the streets get crowded. Oh, and the parking lots there charge according to the type of car, around 4 or 5 euros per hour (yes, it’s expensive!).
Tip: if you want to save money, try parking at the beginning of the city (in the parking lots with a blue line: 3 euros per hour). You’ll walk about 800 meters to 1 km, but you’ll spend less.

Important to Know
If you are going to drive in Italy, it is essential to have an international driver’s license or your Brazilian driver’s license with a certified translation. OK? If you don’t have one, don’t drive, because you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ THE POST DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL LICENSE TO DRIVE IN ITALY (PID)?
Advantages of traveling with a rental car
- If you are traveling with 2 to 5 people, it is the most economical option! You just need to choose the places to visit calmly and leave without any worries! Always have a map with you, or opt for a car with GPS; not all cars have this option! Oh, and your cell phone can be a problem if you pass through a place without an internet signal.
Disadvantages of traveling with a rental car
- Unforeseen expenses with parking and fuel that, unfortunately, cannot be calculated, but this is normal. In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage is the lack of knowledge of the area, which can sometimes result in wasting time finding the main cities, and turning an otherwise pleasant trip into a nightmare!
- Generally, those who drive cannot enjoy the beautiful view around them, as they cannot take their eyes off the road!
- IMPORTANT DETAIL: the road that leads to the Amalfi Coast is NARROW! That is why it is important for the driver to be used to driving in places that require skill, as these are complicated roads for those who are not familiar with the region! ALWAYS keep your speed low and be careful to avoid any type of accident, OK?
How to get to Positano? BY FERRYBOAT
You can make a round trip from Sorrento or other cities by ferryboat! You have the option of getting to Positano by boat! To do this, simply go to the Port of Sorrento or to the port of the city where you will be staying and take the boat. Also, you don’t need to buy the boat ticket in advance, but I recommend that you always check the website before traveling to check the schedules, prices, etc. Check if the city where you will be staying has a boat leaving from the port. Click here on the website for more information about the ferryboat (schedules, prices and purchase).
How to get to Positano? BY GROUP TOUR
This is the BEST option for those who don’t want to worry about public transport schedules, don’t want to worry about “calculating” whether they have time to go and come back, for those who don’t want the headache of possible delays, in short…
For those who just want to enjoy the beauty of this incredible place with safety, comfort and tranquility! A group tour is the perfect solution for those who don’t want to spend a lot (with a private tour, for example), for those who don’t like traveling alone or for those who don’t like driving (or can’t). One of the advantages of a group tour is that you can visit more than one city in the same day😉
Be amazed by the charms of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello on this tour of the Amalfi Coast. Forget the stress of the city! Click here to find out more!
How to get to Positano? WITH A PRIVATE DRIVER
The last option is a private tour. The advantage of a private tour is that you have total freedom to decide your own time and not have to wait to leave and waste unnecessary time using it to visit other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your own hotel, which is important when you have little time to visit a few places.
This type of tour is ideal for VIPs who want to enjoy their trip from start to finish, for small groups of friends, large families, families with children and groups of senior citizens. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those traveling. Basically, it means enjoying the tour without the stress of keeping up with train, subway and bus schedules, without worrying about where the main places to see are!
The price is higher, but it is a worthwhile investment! Especially if you like to do everything in your own time. Remember that if you split the cost between friends and/or family, the cost-benefit will be perfect and excellent for everyone. One of the advantages of a private driver is that you can visit more than one city in the same day, since he will be at your disposal😉.
