3) Where to go Sleddogging in Italy? ENJOY YOUR FIRST CONTACT WITH DOGS!

If you choose to experience this special moment with Sleddog, know that when you arrive at the location, before getting on the sled, there will be an opportunity for interaction between animals and humans, as this will awaken the relationship of trust on both sides, a moment that is essential to allow everything to happen perfectly and thus make the adventure even more unforgettable.

4) Where to go Sleddogging in Italy? ARE THERE SPECIAL RULES FOR FUN?

As mentioned before, although it may seem like a game, sleddogging is considered a sport. The name given to the person who guides the dogs on the sled is Musher, and each sports center generally has its own rules regarding the activity.

Generally, children up to 30 kg have fun riding on the sled as passengers, and they are not allowed to drive la slitta (the sled in Italian). In some schools, children weighing 40 kg and above can drive sleds with two dogs, and those over 50 kg can drive sleds with up to four dogs.

Other schools have height requirements; for example, children who are 130 cm and above can start taking Musher classes.

Ideally, when you book the activity time, you should ask the school or training center staff directly, because, as mentioned, each school has its own rules. The only common requirement is that the child must be at least 3 years old to participate in excursions and tours, even if it is just to be a passenger on the sled.

5) Where to go Sleddogging in Italy? WHICH REGIONS CAN I PRACTICE SLEDDOG RIDES?

Let’s now find out which places offer this type of activity so you can have fun!

Trentino

A beautiful region, where white predominates, but at sunset, the snow turns a light pink, and leaves us fascinated by so much beauty! In this beautiful place, you will find the Athabaska Sleddog School, located near Madonna di Campiglio, in the Rendena Valley. At this school, you can take classes on how to learn how to be a sled dog guide and feel all the excitement of seeing the strength and intelligence of the trained dogs that transform this moment into a magnificent scene.

Alto Adige

One of the things that really catches our attention in Italy are the small towns that are capable of filling our eyes with unparalleled beauty. San Martino in Badia, in the province of Bolzano, is one of these small towns. It has about 1,700 inhabitants and yet it has a sled dog school, Huskysleddog.

The center organizes short excursions, where you will feed the dogs and go for a sled ride along a beautiful route. A truly unique experience!

Veneto

In the Veneto region, both in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Santo Stefano di Cadore, you can experience the thrill of sleddogging. In Cortina, the ASD Scuola Internazionale Mushing Sleddog receives support from the Italian Olympic Committee and the Italian Association for Culture and Sport (remember when I said that the activity is a sport and not just a game?), because learning to drive a sled requires attention and care, just like learning to ski. Interesting, isn’t it?

In Santo Stefano, the Grande Nord Sleddog school welcomes everyone with open arms, whether they have already practiced the sport or those with no experience at all, because the idea is to help everyone learn the sport through human/dog interaction and understand that humans must be in tune with nature to have a happier life!

Friuli Venezia Giulia

In Tarvisio, just a few kilometers from the border with Slovenia, the Sleddog School will allow you to truly experience the thrill of guiding a sled, and they even offer courses for those who want to improve their skills even further. In addition to sledding with dogs, they also offer tours on Motoslitta, those snowmobiles, if you want a different alternative.

Lombardy

134 km from Milan, there is a very beautiful valley that borders Switzerland and that in winter presents us with beautiful landscapes with its snow-covered forests, the Valtellina. And in this valley is a small town called Arnoga. This town has a sleddog center that will provide moments of great relaxation and joy for the whole family, the Sleddog Husky Village Italian Center.

Now at the Scuola Italiana Sleddog. Adults and children can take lessons on how to guide the sled, as well as play with the dogs, take photos and keep the happy memories of the moment they will experience in this magical place forever.

Piedmont

In the city of Sestrière, a dream for many ski and winter sports lovers, you can also have fun with Siberian Huskies and experience the thrill of guiding a sled. The Sestrière Sleddog Center allows adults and children to feel the magic of being transported by docile and trained dogs that make this one of the cutest sports there is. No one is left out of this fun!

Valle d’Aosta

If you are in this region, which borders France and Switzerland, I am sure you will be enchanted by so much beauty and charm.

In the town of Courmayeur, Dog Sled Man, located at the foot of Monte Bianco, has a very friendly team waiting for you to have fun and experience unique moments together. And in Cervinia, another town that is very popular during the winter, excursions on sleds guided by dogs await you so that you and your family can discover the beauty of the moment when man and nature interact.

Emilia Romagna

In recent years, interest in sled dog riding has increased significantly in Italy as a whole. And mountainous regions are increasingly interested in developing this activity. In Reggio Emilia, near Lake Pranda, during the winter, it is possible to practice this activity, as the organizers organize short sled rides, with the intention of making families feel more and more how important it is to interact with nature, whether by spending more time with the dogs or admiring the beautiful landscapes in general.

Good to know!

Just as each school has its own rules for practicing the activity, the prices also vary from one to another, but on average, the price of each sled dog session varies between 90.00 and 160.00 euros per person, depending on the type of adventure chosen.

The excursions and tours generally last 1 to 2 hours and cover around 4 to 5 km.

6) Where to go Sleddogging in Italy? WHAT IS THE IDEAL CLOTHING TO WEAR FOR SLEDDOGGING?

Remember that you will be in the middle of a lot of snow, mountains and when you are on the sled, and the dogs start running, there will still be wind! Therefore, the recommended clothing for sleddogging is the same as that used during winter, a windbreaker and waterproof jacket. Gloves, a hat and goggles are accessories that you absolutely cannot miss. The ideal shoes are winter boots, with well-structured and waterproof soles, but ski shoes and gym shoes are not recommended. Read also: How to Pack Your Suitcase for the Italian Winter?

Fun fact!

Did you know that there is a breed that looks a lot like the Husky? It is the Alaskan Malamute. The difference between the two is that Malamutes are stronger and more robust, weigh between 36 and 43 kg and can measure up to 66 cm.

The Husky weighs between 20 and 27 kg and its size varies between 53 and 59 cm. Because it is lighter, the Husky is more agile, ideal for being the star of the Sleddog, but when it comes to cuteness and friendliness, the two breeds are tied!
