Parking on the Amalfi Coast: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning a visit to the Amalfi Coast, it’s important to know that parking can be a challenge. The roads are narrow and winding, and there’s often no parking space in the towns along the coast. Find out more here: Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast.

Some options include private parking lots that charge a daily fee or street parking, but be prepared to walk to your destination. Some hotels offer parking spaces, but check in advance and be prepared to pay an additional fee. Check out our Driving in Italy section!

Disadvantages of traveling with a rental car:

• Unforeseen expenses with parking and fuel that, unfortunately, cannot be calculated, but this is normal. In my opinion, the biggest disadvantage is the lack of knowledge of the area, which can sometimes result in wasting time finding the main cities, and turning an otherwise pleasant trip into a nightmare!

• Generally, those who drive cannot enjoy the beautiful view around them, as they cannot take their eyes off the road!

• REMEMBER: the road that leads to the Amalfi Coast is NARROW! That is why it is important for the driver to be used to driving in places that require skill, as these are complicated roads for those who are not familiar with the region! ALWAYS keep your speed low and be careful to avoid any type of accident, OK?

If you prefer not to worry about parking, consider using public transportation or hiring a private driver to take you to your destinations. Remember that the Amalfi Coast is a popular and busy place during the summer months, so plan ahead and be patient when looking for a place to park. 

Disadvantages of traveling by public transport:

• For families with small children and elderly people it can be very tiring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT;
• Having to adapt to fixed timetables for outward and return transport and during high season having to deal with crowded transport;
• Having to get around alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
• Time wasted on public transport to get to the places where the tourist attractions are or money spent on taxis once you reach your destination.

If you are staying at a hotel in the area, you are exempt from the rotation system ONLY on the day of arrival or departure, however, have proof of accommodation in case the authorities ask for it.
