Our Introduction

First, we need to know that Apulia is a region of sea, plains and mountains, and that, historically, it has always played a role in connecting the West and the East. As it is bathed by the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, it offers clean beaches, with over 800 km of coastline – and it is there that the largest salt mines of the “Bel Paese” are located. Apulia is a strip of land that stretches out into the sea with wonderful beaches for all tastes, such as the sandy Torre dell’Orso and Porto Cesario on the stone rivieras of Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, where they meet the crystal clear and calm Ionian Sea and the intense blue Adriatic.

4) Why visit Apulia? BECAUSE IT HAS AMAZING TOURIST CITIES!

The region has cities with unique characteristics and a very special energy. Joy and hospitality are some of the adjectives that we can describe about its cities. Let’s get to know some of them?

Bari

A city with centuries of history, Bari, the capital of the region, will allow you to get a taste of what Apulia is all about. We can say that this city was quite disputed in the past, Romans, Barbarians, Byzantines and Normans are some of the people who fought for its place. And with that, a bit of the culture of each people always remained, so it is a place with an enviable cultural richness!

Piazza del Ferrarese, Basilica di San Nicola, Piazza Mercantile, Castello Svevo, are some of the attractions to visit in Bari. Another interesting place to visit is the Port of Bari and the seafront walking trail, as they are truly beautiful! The whole area, the sea, the sunset, the movement of the boats and the people, is really worth seeing! Read also: What to do in Bari?

Lecce

This is the most baroque city in Apulia, so much so that it is called the “Florence of the South”, mainly due to the buildings in its Historic Center, which are in the Baroque style. When you are strolling through the streets and alleys of the city, you will notice that the buildings have sumptuous details and are often full of flowers, a real delight.

The Roman Theater is one of the witnesses to the history of Lecce and proves the Roman presence in the city. Lecce Square and Cathedral, the Basilica di Santa Croce, and the Church of San Mateo should be on your list of places to visit. How about having a coffee in a nice place? Go to Piazza Santo Oronzio, where you will find many little shops, restaurants and cafes! Read also: Let’s visit Lecce in Apulia?

Alberobello

Imagine a city unlike anything you’ve ever seen? With its “Trulli”, which are cone-shaped houses, unique and exclusive buildings in the Apulia region. I consider the “Trulli” a true work of art, because incredibly they are built only with stones, no cement, brick or wood are used, only the art of fitting the stones together, truly incredible! The Trullo Sovrano is the largest in the city, and is worth a visit.

But what else can you visit in Alberobello? The Church of Saint Anthony and the Siamese Trulli buildings, the beautiful Basilica Minori Dei Santi Medici, dedicated to Cosmas and Damian (patron saints of the city) and the Territory Museum and Casa Pezzolla, are places for you to get to know and feel a little more of the city’s energy. Polignano a Mare

Without a doubt, a city that you cannot miss when you are in Apulia. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, it has a sea of a splendid blue. The city is located on top of a hill, which allows us to admire beautiful panoramic views.

Another interesting fact about the city is that it was there that Domenico Modugno, the original singer of the song “Nel blu dipinto di blu” was born. Don’t remember which one it is? And if I say: “Volaareeee, oohhh, Cantareee, oooooh…” do you remember which one it is? Well, there is even a statue in his honor where you can take a photo. Speaking of photos, one of the main spots to take great photos is Lama Monachile, as it has a beautiful view of the sea!

The tourist attractions that I recommend visiting are the city’s Historic Center, the Piazza della Chiesa Matriz, where you will find the Clock Tower and a stone nativity scene from the 16th century. In addition, several beaches, each more beautiful than the last, and caves make up the city’s natural beauty. The most famous cave is the Grotta Palazzese, which has a restaurant inside!
