Considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, it is also one of the most visited, so if you have available time, you cannot miss the chance to visit Pompeii. Here it it our today’s post: How to go to Pompeii from Rome? Stay with us and make the best of boot shaped country! Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams!!! ALSO: see our “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

Read here “How to visit Pompeii? “. Pompeii was covered in ashes in 79 A.D. and, in that moment, life stopped, through its roads, fountains, houses and shapes of people who were buried by the ashes; In Pompeii you can have the opportunity to experience and understand the life of the Romans in the city, at that time. Also read How to go to the cities near Rome: one day trip!

In addition, on the same tour, you can take the chance to visit Naples, which is located 207 kilometers away from Rome and is the third most populous city in Italy (the first one is Rome, followed by Milan) and is the capital of the region of Campania. Naples is famous in the world for its music, for being the birthplace of pizza, for its history, for its historic center and for its UNESCO World Heritage.

Well, there are plenty of reasons to visit this fantastic city! If you are staying in Rome, then read our special post “Which neighborhood should I choose to stay in Rome?” – you will find great tips for choosing your hotel in a very well located spot in Rome! Also, I recommend you to read our post with some advice on what to do in Naples in half day: What to do in Naples in a half day?

This option is PERFECT for those who want to visit Naples AND Pompeii. Remember that many of these tours are usually done in large groups and with guides in Spanish (or other languages, but you can easily find this tour in English as well.). Group tours are a great alternative for those who don’t want to spend too much money and for those who are not used to traveling alone, and therefore prefer to be with other people, where you will have person who will organize all the day’s tours! That way you don’t have to worry about anything! Just being rested and willing to visit magnificent places! Oh, and be at the meeting point in time! ; )

There are many train and timetable options from Rome’s Termini Station. I suggest you using the train so you can enjoy the day a little bit more, starting around 07:00 am. You can buy tickets directly at Termini Station (best to buy the day before) or buy online through the Trenitalia website (most recommended).

Just go to the Termini station and buy the ticket the day before, or make the reservation in advance through the website, so you can have the possibility to save both: time and money, and have everything organized – Once you arrive in Naples (at the Central Station), you will only have to follow the arrows that will take you to the Circumvesuviana, the Regional Railway. When you’re there, I suggest you to buy a “biglietto giornaliero U3” (daily ticket U3), which allows you to go to Pompeii, return to Naples and still use public transport in Naples until the end of the day. If you buy the single ticket you will end up spending a lot more, so take note! 😉

You will have to take the train towards Sorrento, and get off at the Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri stop. There are two trains that leave each hour, and the journey takes approximately 40 minutes; do not be surprised if you have a delay, in southern Italy, unfortunately, this is very common. Trains do not work as well as in northern Italy!

An alternative service is available for you who like practicality and economy: a group transfer between Pompeii and Rome! A bus leaves Rome early, close to the Cavour metro station. With a round-trip shuttle service between Rome and Pompeii, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii any way you like without having to worry about transportation. Fantastic, isn’t it?!?

You can rent a car in the center of Rome and go to Pompeii, and if you don’t get lost (LOL – always remember to take the GPS), if you have time, and especially if you have a few more days, you can also take the chance to go to other cities that are nearby, such as Naples, the Amalfi Coast or Capri! Among the other options, precisely because there is no fixed schedule, the rental car is certainly the ideal choice if you don’t worry about taking a few, not to say, unnecessary turns. It is always difficult to drive on roads that we do not know, but it depends on each person and the type of trip they are used to.

In my opinion if you also want to visit Naples, renting a car it’s not the best idea. Naples is a very big and chaotic city, and – don’t get me wrong – is not one of the safest Italian cities. So if you choose this option I suggest you to pay full insurance for the car you’re renting. This way you can avoid an unpleasant surprise and we will not ruin your trip if something goes wrong. In addition to being a big city, you will end up wasting a lot of time in traffic and trying to understand where you are going, but if you are going to visit only Naples, and the other locations I mentioned before, this is certainly a good option.

How about if I give you a rental car option? Are you ready for it? If you are renting a car be sure to read our posts in the section Driving in Italy on the blog Your Travel to Italy. In addition to car itinerary tips, we have everything about signage, tolls, roads and many more tips.

We have a partner that can help you: Rent Cars! Have you ever thought about renting a car in Italy, without leaving your home? Click on the banner below to learn more! Search, compare and choose!

The last option is a private tour. The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time using it to get to know other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your hotel, which is important when you have little time available to visit a few places.

In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the tourist spot you want to visit. And if you book in advance, you will often be able to have the driver speaking your language, so you can easily ask for clarification about the trip.

This type of tour is ideal for VIPs, who want to enjoy the trip from the beginning to the end. Excellent option for small groups of people or elderly people. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those who travel. Basically, you should just enjoy the tour without the stress of attending train, subway, bus schedules, or worrying about where the main places to be seen are!

How to go to Pompeii from Rome? Let’s be careful, you get what you pay for, especially in a place you don’t know, and without knowing how to speak the local language: make sure to do the right choice! I suggest you think carefully about the options presented above, especially if you are traveling with children and the elderly! Don’t take risks, invest a little more and travel safely, comfortably and without worries or risks of ruining your long-awaited trip, deal?!?

If you feel insecure or have no time, and need help to organize your trip, do not hesitate to look for me!
