1) Where to stay in Catania? IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER

Catania is an ancient city, was founded in the 8th century BC and has about 320,000 inhabitants. The main point of the city is, of course, the beautiful Piazza Duomo (Duomo Square). It is there that, in addition to the beautiful Cathedral of Catania, which we will visit next, there is the Fontana dell’Elefante (Fountain of the Elephant), which is one of the biggest symbols of the city.

Sant’Agata (Saint Agatha)

The Cathedral of Catania is dedicated to the city’s Patron Saint, Sant’Agata, who according to tradition was subjected to great martyrdom by the Roman consul and sacrificed herself before renouncing her Christian faith. When we talk about architecture, the Cathedral presents an interesting, and beautiful, mixture of Norman and Baroque influences, inside it is possible to see several paintings, frescoes and details that enchant. What is most striking, however, are the remains of members of the royal family, the clergy and the Sicilian artistic class.

The Palace of the Elephants

Of the building from the Norman era, only the apses and the transept remained. The external appearance is a restoration work done by the architect Vaccarini who, after the devastating earthquake of 1693, designed the entire restoration, Piazza Duomo and included the Palace of the Elephants (near the fountain) that today functions as the Town Hall. Staying in this region of the historic center is an excellent option, even if it is not the most affordable (see it as an investment! Hahaha).

Downtown

Downtown is full of life, great dining options and is close to everything, including the sea. Consider that you will be close to most of the main tourist attractions and all the hustle and bustle of the city, Catania life! Not to mention that the region is full of shops and it has a really excelent tourist structure! It is very worth considering!

The options of Hotels that I advise with great value for money are:
