The island of Vulcano is mythologically recognized as the seat of the forges of Hephaestus, Greek name for the god of fire; in Roman mythology, Hephaestus is Vulcan, hence the name of the island. Based on what is documented in the literature of the time, the island is the result of the merger of several volcanoes including Vulcano della Fossa and Vulcanello. In the first half of the 19th century, Englishman Stevenson, who continued mining, also planted the island&#8217;s first vineyards and then bought the entire island. His village is close to the castle and the construction is still there today. The English who lived there left the island after a violent eruption in 1888.
