This site was born as a rice bagging factory in the late 19th century and was the only concentration camp that had its own crematorium.<strong> It was qualified by the Nazis as Polizeihaftlager, which was a police detention camp<\/strong> and had, in fact, three functions: to eliminate hostages, guerrillas, Italian, Slovenian and Croatian political prisoners and Jews; screening of political deportees and to other Reich concentration camps \u2013 normally Dachau, Buchenwald and Mauthausen camps for politicians, Auschwitz (and later Bergen Belsen) for Jews; and a storage place for goods stolen from Jewish communities.
