Our Introduction

In Italy, there is a type of tourism called speleological tourism, a type of cave tourism, and grottoes, as there are several grottoes from the north to the south of the country. Many still have researchers and geologists working at the site, as is the case with the Frasassi Cave. The Frasassi Caves are a karst cave system in the municipality of Genga, Italy, in the province of Ancona, Marche. They are among the most famous caves in Italy! Let’s get to know it. A little about Frasassi Caves: an unforgettable masterpiece of nature!

Frasassi Caves: an unforgettable masterpiece of nature! The Frasassi Caves are one of the best-known and most visited among the Italian tourist caves and are located in the central region of Le Marche, in the province of Ancona, commune of Genga. It has 13 km of galleries, a fascinating route, and is 200 m high. It is known as the Great Wind Gully and was discovered in 1971 by climbers who, during a climb, observed that a tree branch swayed with the blowing of a wind that came from inside the rock. They began to excavate and discovered this masterpiece of nature.

The place is incredible, and I had never seen anything like it in my life: a set of caves with stalactites (rock formations that originate from the ceiling of a grotto or cave) of light and bright colors and stalagmites (formations that grow from the ground) of more than 200 years, many meters high, and of different shapes. Lakes with immense depth and crystal-clear waters—I don’t have words to express what I saw. Simply fantastic and spectacular.

Get to know the Route

The route I took went through 5 rooms in the middle of stalagmites and stalactites of different shapes, sizes, and colors. But, what made my eyes light up was the sala delle candele (candle room). At a certain point, the guide will ask you to look down, and you will see a lake of crystal clear waters with these limestone formations; they look like candles. It’s so beautiful!

Useful Information

The Grotto is open for visitation year-round. As I went to the Italian school where I was studying, I paid 10 euros, but I think the common ticket costs, more or less, 13 to 15 euros. It is not allowed to photograph or touch anything inside the cave. There is a service of photographers who take a photo of you near one of the limestone walls. You choose the size of the photo you want and pay later at the exit of the park. The photo I chose cost 7 euros; it was beautiful. I think it’s worth it as a souvenir of this amazing place.
