Our Introduction

In the prestigious Valley of the Temples, in the province of Agrigento, in Sicily, we find a cliff that is thousands of years old. We are talking about the magnificent Scala dei Turchi (“Turkish Steps”, in free translation).

The Scala dei Turchi is one of the most popular areas for tourists visiting the Sicilian region. The immense cliff presents itself with an undulating and irregular shape, and clear lines that outline a unique beauty. The color of the rock is what enchants the most: with a pure white, it has this color because of the minerals present there. According to several studies by geologists, the Scala dei Turchi is made up almost entirely of marl, which is a clayey and limestone sedimentary rock.

A little about history

The name of the place, Scala dei Turchi, was named after the Saracen pirates, erroneously called Turks by the locals of antiquity. In the 1500s they used to land on the rock formation to plunder the coastal villages.

As the large rocky wall looks like a staircase, this made it easier to disembark from the sea and climb to the coast, in addition to everything else, it was a little sought after place, that is, it was not safe and, therefore, pirates entered the region through there.

The Scala dei Turchi is exactly in Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento and is also known as Punta Maiata.

The place has also served as the setting for many film productions. Once there, it’s easy to understand why. Some important films that present images of this wonderful place are: Malèna, Inspector Montalbano, In Guerra per Amore and Arritmìa. Also read: What to do in Sicily in a short time?

What to see in Realmonte?

As we said, Scala dei Turchi is located in Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento and, once there, you can take a short tour of the city.

Realmonte’s name comes from the medieval Latin “Mons Regalis”, which means King’s Mountain. The first village was founded here in the 17th century and, in 1681, at the request of the noble feudal lord Don Domenico Monreale, a small town was built on a few kilometers from the coast, as a form of protection. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the village passed through the hands of the noble Alimena family, Dukes of Castrofilippo, who also took care of the economic and artistic development of the town.

The city is charming and definitely worth a visit. The natural beauties are magnificent! The beaches are worth mentioning and the naturalistic and archaeological itineraries will delight you.

A day on the beach: Lido Rossello or Punta Grande

If you want to spend the day on the beach, be sure to go to Lido Rossello or Punta Grande. Here you will find small coves close to suggestive limestone cliffs separated from each other by headlands carved by wind, weather and sea. Its colors are unique and impress even the most demanding tourists. The color of the sea also seems to have been made by hand: with its turquoise blue, the sun illuminates the waters and makes the landscape breathtaking. For those who like diving: the beaches here are a field day!

Visit the Monterosso Tower and the Archaelogical Site

Realmonte also introduces us to places rich in history and archeology, such as the Monterosso Tower, which served to spot Saracen ships and warn of possible attacks. Another beautiful attraction is the archaeological site of Villa Romana de “Durrueli”.

Also not to be missed is the Costabianca Theater

Located at the foot of the Capo Rossello Bay, it was built in the late 80’s and its structure is inspired by Greek and Roman theaters, and presents itself in a majestic way. The acoustics are impeccable and, during the summer, several cultural events take place here, such as concerts and theater performances.
