Introduction
When you go to a foreign country, it is always good to have some advice from someone who really knows where you are going. The more information, the better, right? Mainly, I suggest you do research on the habits and customs of the local people to avoid possible inconveniences (and, of course, to be more cautious in general). Find out here: What are the cultural differences between northern and southern Italy.
For this reason, I tried to organize a kind of list (to be more specific, there will be 10 tips and advice) in which I will put the information and suggestions that may be useful for tourists who wish to visit Italy. So, let’s start with our list and find out the ten advices for your trip to Italy!
1) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! ORGANIZE YOUR ITINERARY VERY WELL!
Organize your itinerary very well: Try not to do or see many things, this is one of the mistakes that many people make. Trying to see the whole country at once and deciding to see “everything” from the main cities in one day, well, let me tell you something: you can’t do that! You need to focus on some things and see them well. Set up enough time for you to also be able to relax while on vacation. Find out more reading this post: “How many days do I need to visit Italy?”
The itinerary
Another thing to do is try to visit not only the wonderful tourist cities, but also their surroundings. For example, the villages, which would surprise you for being so beautiful and for the many traditions they express – enriching you as much as they do, as an exchange of cultures is created (in fact, this is one of the main reasons why you travel). Be sure to go to the Example Itineraries category to understand how to organize your trip in the best possible way! I’m sure that the various posts will help you a lot in this stage of the organization 😉 Be sure to read: “Is it worthwhile to hire a Specialized Consultancy in Travel in Italy!”
2) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! KNOW THE VOLTAGE BEFORE YOU TRAVEL!
Electricity in Italy: in Italy, the electric voltage is 220 volts and is distributed by alternating current, according to European standards. Most hotels offer adapters for specific plugs; in any case, take with you your own adapters.
3) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! DRINK WATER IN FOUTAINS!
Can you drink tap water? For sure! In Italy, the supply of drinking water is guaranteed throughout the national territory. You can calmly drink the water that comes out of the taps and drinking fountains, as it is periodically controlled. When the water is not drinkable, there will be a warning note; otherwise, you can fill the bottle of water in any drinking fountain throughout Italy (there are so many, and some are even beautiful). Since the water is good to drink, avoid buying new bottles, especially in the most “famous” cities, as it can be expensive. Take your bottle! But, please, don’t try to drink from Fontana de Trevi, for example!
4) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! KNOW THE BUSINESS HOURS!
The usual business hours in Italy are from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and, then, from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm – but shopping centers and large stores are always open from 10 am to 9 or 10 pm. On some Sundays during the year, especially in large cities, shopping malls also remain open. In small towns, there is also the tradition of closing the stores for lunch at certain times (it is up to each owner of each establishment).
Pharmacy Hours
Pharmacies follow business hours (9:30 am to noon, and 3 pm to 7 pm); however, in the capitals, there are pharmacies open 24 hours a day for occasional night emergencies, following a rotation system. When the pharmacy is closed, you will see information about the opening hours and directions to the nearest drugstore. In Italy, there is still no culture of opening stores every day, As mentioned earlier, Italians love to enjoy life, and this behavior happens mainly in the south-central part of the country. 5) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! KNOW THE RESTAURANTS HOURS!
What are the meal times in Italy? In Italy, breakfast is usually served at 7:00 am; in hotels, it is common to serve coffee until 10:00 am (after this time, it is not possible to order the meal). In restaurants, lunch runs from 12:30 to 4:30 pm, and dinner is served from 07:30 pm to 11:00 pm. These times are approximate and can vary a lot – in the North, there is a tendency to anticipate the announced times, and in the South, it is common to stretch meals until late. 6) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! CHOOSE THE BEST PERIOD TO TRAVEL!
What is the worst time to visit Italy? August is not a good month to travel, as most Italians are on vacation and almost everything is closed. In addition, it is also difficult to find vacancies in hotels and inns, among other forms of accommodation, unless you have booked in advance. Plus, the prices are very high, so avoid this month! Not to mention, it’s the hottest month! I don’t recommend it for children or seniors! Find out here: “What is the best time to visit Italy?”.
7) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! UNDERSTAND THE FEES IN RESTAURANTS!
Italy offers one of the best gastronomic cultures on earth, and you can eat well in any part of the country. However, when we see the menu, we must pay attention to the inclusion of the cover charge, as an extra fee is charged that varies from restaurant to restaurant (about two euros, more or less). This addition is usually indicated at the bottom of the menu – so you won’t be surprised when they bring you the bill.
Golden Tip
In Italy you cannot refuse a good artisanal gelato – in fact, it is a pleasure that you will never want to refuse. A scoop of gelato can turn even that dissatisfied tourist into a calm and relaxed resident of the region. Eat gelato every time you can! Want to know more about food? So be sure to visit our Section Food and Wine in Italy.
8) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! UNDERSTAND THE TIPPING SYSTEM!
How do tips work in Italy? Tips are not mandatory. In Italy, there are no consolidated rules regarding tips, but it is common to leave some change (around 10% of the bill amount) if the customer is satisfied with the service provided. However, it is not a rule, as can happen in other European countries. Do you have any dobt about how to behave in Italy? Click here!
9) Ten advices for your trip to Italy! KNOW A LITTLE MORE ABOUT TAXIS!
How to take a taxi to Italy? You can’t stop a taxi in the middle of the street; it’s even fun when Americans do that. Be wary of anyone approaching you and trying to convince you to get in the car. Authorized taxi drivers are parked at their station, a place delimited by the yellow strips on the floor and signposted “TAXI”. Anyway, it is more advisable to get around by public transport (like the subway) or walking. Would you like to know more about transport in Italy? Then enter our section on Transport in Italy and find all your answers!
