Our Introduction

It is not a coincidence that the etymology of the name Calabria, derived from the Greek, means  “I do good” and fertile landeven today, the entire coastal area is rich in vast olive groves, orange plantations and typical products such as: bergamot and cedar. In addition, the traces that the Greek and Roman civilizations left in the territory are numerous and invaluable, but unfortunately, the Calabrian people are not fully aware of their wonderful history. Calabria therefore offers a wide variety of landscapes. It is possible to admire the clear sea (the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east) that surrounds practically the entire region of the Pollino mountains, the plateau and the wonderful lakes of Sila. 1) Why visit Calabria? BECAUSE ITS ATTRACTIONS SHOULD NOT BE MISSED

Among the main attractions we can mention the Aragonese  Castle in Reggio Calabria, the  Norman-Swabian Castle in Cosenza, the Aragonese Angioino Castle  in Pizzo Calabro, the Catholic (Church) in the village of Stilo with its important Byzantine architecture. Among the archaeological sites we cannot fail to remember the Temple of Hera Lacinia in Crotone, the ancient city of Sybaris one of the most prosperous cities of Magna Graecia, as well as Locri, Medma and other smaller archaeological sites scattered throughout Calabria.

Stilo Catholic (Cattolica di Silo)

Also strong is the presence of religious buildings, especially the churches that are located in the main cities and medieval villages. Among the most important places of worship, I recommend a visit to the Catholic Church of Stilo, considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture in southern Italy, the Florense Abbey in San Giovanni in Fiore, the Duomo of Cosenza, the Sanctuary of San Francesco in Paola, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi near Cerchiara Calabria and the national monument of the Church of San Bernardino of Siena in Amantea,  This is just to mention a few of the most important religious complexes.

Reggio Calabria

Cathedral of Reggio Calabria

I cannot fail to recall the first Greek colony in Calabria, the city of Reggio Calabria, which today is considered one of the most beautiful in the region, both from a historical, architectural and natural point of view: Reggio Calabria,  is known throughout Italy for its spectacular waterfront, for Corso Garibaldi, full of shops, bars and restaurants and especially for its museum,  which hosts the famous Riace bronzes,  two bronze statues of Greek origin, in an excellent state of preservation, they are considered masterpieces of archaic Greek sculpture, one of the few sculptures from that period of history that still exist today in the world (practically intact), precisely for this reason they are so important!

Cosenza

Another tip is to visit another important city, Cosenza, among its beauties to be seen, the Duomo, recognized by UNESCO, the Swabian

Castle, an important millenary fortress that hosted King Frederick II, the Palazzo Arnone, home to a National Gallery and which houses the icon of  Our Lady of Pilerio (matron of the city), the Stauroteca, a relic containing a small piece of the cross of Christ, which was donated to the city by Frederick II.

Other beautiful villages are…

Among the beauties of this region, I cannot fail to mention some villages, which although they are little known, hide great treasures that are worth exploring: Altomonte, Morano Calabro, Gerace, Bova, Scilla, Tropea (super famous), Stilo (famous for the Catholic), Santa Severina (love and love!!)  and Amantea, Scalea, Scilla, these villages are worth discovering not only for their beautiful historic centers that are highly valued and preserved but also to get to know their cultural and gastronomic traditions!!

National Parks of Calabria

Calabria has some national parks that have been highly valued in recent years, such as the Sila National Park, the Polino and the Aspromonte, these parks are ideal destinations for mountain tourism, among the various activities that I advise are trekking on the various trails, the Raffing, etc.  Few people know about it, but Sila Park also has  a ski slope that during the winter becomes a wonderful destination for “bianco” tourism!!

Also not to be missed are the beaches…

Capo Vaticano - Mare, Calabria, Italia

The various peoples who have lived in Calabria have left not only cultural riches, but also so many culinary traditions, the authenticity and unmistakable taste of their products are recognized in the world! Check out our section on Food in Italy!

Calabrian cuisine offers a wide variety of local products,  such as the famous ‘Nduja de Spilsby, the red onion of Tropea, the Pecorino del Poro, extra virgin olive oil, wine and herbal liqueur and the citrus fruits of Calabria. As well as so many spices, including the famous Calabrian pepper, the tasty sun-dried tomatoes, in short, the result of ancient traditions, transmitted from father to son, combined with the great weather conditions and an enviable geography make this region one of the ones that has one of the best oenonomic wines in Italy. Conclusion

What more can I say about this land? A beautiful and simple land; an ancient land illuminated by the sun and “embraced” by the sea. Its coastline is so fascinating that it’s called the “Coast of the Gods” or the “Costa Bella.”. I want to define it not only as the tip of the boot, but mainly as a springboard to Sicily, another wonderful region in southern Italy that we’ve talked about on this blog!
