Crib of the Italian Renaissance, capital of incredible Tuscany, Florence is a city full of poetry, art, culture and magnificent attractions! Its attractions, essentially, are concentrated in its historic center, which can be visited completely on foot, however, if you want to explore this incredible city a little better and need to use public transport, here is the post made especially for you: how to use the public transport in Florence? Our Introduction

Florence is not a huge city and, as I said before, it can easily be explored on foot, especially if you only want to see the main points of the city. Why? Because most of them are concentrated in the historic center, that is: with a beautiful walk, you can visit all of them. But if you want to explore the surroundings of the historic center of Florence, if you want to literally go further, today I tell you how to use public transport in Florence. Is it worth using public transport in Florence?

Honestly? No! Unless you are staying very far from the historic center, otherwise, as you’ll notice once you’re there, there’s no need. Also read: What to do in Florence when it rains?

That’s why I always say:

When choosing your hotel, remember not to choose a hotel so far from the main tourist attractions in the city you are in. Remember that often what you save on hotel you spend on transportation, so it’s not worth it, ok?

My golden tip is:

Choose a hotel that is a little closer to the tourist attractions, even if you pay a little more, but be sure that you will not have problems getting to and from the chosen place, nor worrying about schedules after the traffic stops. public transport at night. Although Florence is a city that can be visited on foot, there are bus and tram lines available, and they work very well. Also read: What is the difference between hotel categories in Italy?

1) Public transport in Florence: BUS

Florence has excellent coverage in terms of buses covering all areas of the city.

Good to know…

Once on board, you need to validate the ticket purchased! Don’t stop doing it, okay?! From that moment on, the ticket will be valid for 90 minutes, that is, the time available to get on and off as many buses as you want, always using the ticket you have in hand.

Guys: don’t fall into the temptation of not validating the ticket! You can get a fine if you don’t, and the fines can go up to 240 euros!

Bus lines

The most interesting bus lines to get around the center are the C1, C2, C3 and C4 – all electric. Common lines 12 and 13 are also very useful, as they go up the southern hill of the Arno – the one that leads to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Church of San Miniato al Monte. Gold Tip:

  • To check ALL schedules, itineraries and lines, visit the OFFICIAL website of the Florence transport administrator. To access the Autolinee Toscane website, CLICK HERE!

“Nottetempo” and the night buses

In Florence there are no buses that run at night, but we have the Nottetempo, which operates from 10 pm to 2 pm and runs through different neighborhoods of the city. BUT, ATTENTION: this service is very precarious, so much so that the official website barely loads, so I don’t advise it, but it’s good to know about its existence. If so, I suggest that you ask for information about the service at your hotel reception.

Useful information:

  • The “classic” timetable for buses in Florence is from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Want to buy your tickets online? Click here!
  • How much? The single ticket, which lasts 90 minutes, costs EUR 1.50.

2) Public transport in Florence: TRAM

This is perhaps one of the least interesting options in Florence from a tourist point of view. Of course, the tram’s charm is undeniable, but if we talk about practicality, none of the three lines that operate in Florence passes through the historic center.

So why is this option in our post?

How about an uncompromised tour on a free day in Florence? It can be a great option to combine something different and discover a city little known by the great tourist mass! Here’s the tip! This vehicle is useful to avoid traffic, because, unlike the bus or taxi, it has independent lines and runs without any problem.

Where to buy tickets?

In the same place where you buy the bus tickets, as they are integrated systems and both are valid for both types of transport. The value, of course, is the same: EUR 1.50.

3) Public transport in Florence: TAXI

Expensive! Very expensive! There, said it! Using a taxi in Florence is expensive, but it may be more comfortable at some point, for example, arriving and departing either from the airport or the central station.

Approximate values are as follows:

  • Fixed departure fee on weekdays from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm: 3.30 euros;
  • Fixed departure rate on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 5.30 euros;
  • Price per hour of waiting: 24 euros.

It is worth it?

As I said: if you are arriving or departing with suitcases, coming from the airport or the central station, maybe yes!

  • Always check the timetables of the means of transport used, remembering that, normally, the timetables change seasonally, that is: always check ALL timetables!
  • Remember to always validate your ticket as soon as you access the transport used, ok?!
