Our Introduction

The Tuscany region is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and that is undeniable! With beautiful cities like Siena, Florence, Volterra, Lucca, among many others, we find Pisa. Pisa is a historic city famous for its unusual Leaning Tower, located in Piazza Del Duomo. Also read: what to visit in Pisa in one day?

Let’s get to know a little about Pisa and its tower…

Pisa was formed near the confluence of the mouths of the Arno and Auser rivers, in an area that was, at the time, a lagoon. It was formed through the historical inheritance of different peoples who passed through there, such as the Greeks, Etruscans and Ligurians, just to name a few. Piazza del Duomo is the most important part of Pisa both from a historical point of view and from a tourist point of view. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is affectionately called Piazza Dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”) for its beauty and originality. The square is formed by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo and the Campanile, which is the Leaning Tower that we will visit today. Why is it leaning?

One of the most asked questions by those who visit Pisa and see the Leaning Tower: why is it leaning? The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It is 57 meters high (58.36 meters if we consider the base of its foundation) and was built over two centuries, between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. This architectural beauty weighs 14,453 tons, and features blind arches and six floors. The slope is due to a weakening of the terrain that occurred in the early stages of construction, when the Tower was still on the third floor. The Tower’s inclination is 3.97° in relation to its central axis. Find out How to go to Pisa from Florence? and Where to stay in Pisa?

The Restoration of the Tower

To contain the tower’s inclination, which was in danger of falling down, in 1990 a long restoration process began, which lasted 20 years! The works were completed in 2001 and the slope was reduced through the application of steel rods and lead counterweights weighing up to 900 tons; Sub-excavation work was also carried out to reinforce the base of the building. Architects and engineers guaranteed the service for the next three centuries! In 2004, the restoration of the entire external part of the Tower began and on April 22nd, 2011, all the works were completed and the Tower, today, can be seen in all its splendor, safely and majestically!

Useful information

For us to visit the Tower, firstly, I suggest you buy tickets in advance, especially if you are traveling during high season (between June and August). Even with the ticket in hand, it is often unavoidable to queue, but it is not absurd. The entrance fee is 18 euros. The best time to visit the Tower is around 10:00 am, but if you want to see a sunset that looks like it was hand-painted, go in the late afternoon, around 6:00 pm. From the ground floor to the top there are 293 steps. The path is a bit narrow, so the visit is not recommended for those with claustrophobia. If you are afraid of heights, I also suggest you not to climb, the same goes for people with limited mobility.

Good to know…

It is not allowed to go up with backpacks and bags, so on the day you go up to the top of the Tower, take the necessary basics. There’s security control at the monument’s entrance, O.K.?! Avoid short or uncomfortable clothes and wear comfortable shoes.

Pay attention to opening hours!

Several monuments in Italy change their opening hours according to the season, ok?! So always confirm your appointment. The Leaning Tower is open every day except December 25th and January 1st. The pre-defined schedules, which are subject to change, are: from November 1st to March 22nd, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; from March 23rd to June 15th, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; from June 17th to August 31st, from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm; from September 1st to October 31st, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, and on June 16th, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. On holidays, opening hours are from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.

It is worth it?

Yes! The view from the top is impressive and offers us a 360° view of the city. The panorama from above presents us with a view that goes from the Piazza, passes through the plain around the Piazza and we can see as far as Lungarno. If you pay attention to the Baptistery and the Cathedral, you will also notice that the two buildings have slight slopes, although it is very subtle!

When you leave the Tower, after visiting the Piazza, I suggest you take a walk through the lesser-known part of the city: the part behind Piazza Dei Miracoli. This is where life in Pisa really happens and it’s an area little known by tourists! Don’t visit the city in a hurry: take your time, walk, explore the city.
