1)Let’s visit Emilia Romagna? A little about the Emilia Romagna Region

Emilia Romagna marks the border between northern and central Italy. It is one of the richest areas in Italy with historic cities, fertile agricultural land, thriving industry, and a modern and efficient service system for the citizen. The variety of natural environments and the historical and artistic heritage of the cities of this region determine a great variety of types of tourism. Its tourist vocation as a seaside resort dates back to the mid-19th century.

It is located in the northern part of Italy, with 22,122 square kilometers and 3,846,755 inhabitants, the largest city is Bologna. Emilia Romagna borders to the north with Veneto and Lombardy, to the west with Piedmont and Liguria, to the south with Tuscany and the Republic of San Marino.

The Tourism

Nature tourism can be enjoyed thanks to a system of protected areas. The flow of cultural tourism is fueled by the capital Bologna, Byzantine Ravenna, Romanesque Modena, Ferrara and Renaissance Parma. The region also offers the opportunity to enjoy a variety of wine and food itineraries, allowing you to savour the full flavour of delicious Italian and regional cuisine. Not to mention that in Emilia we find the Ferrari Museum and Factory where you can take a test drive for those who love adventure.

2) Let’s get to know Emilia Romagna? DISCOVER THE MAIN CITIES OF THIS REGION!

This incredible region was once separated. There was the Emilia region, which included cities such as Bologna, Modena and Parma, but there was also the Romagna region, which included cities such as Ravenna and Imola. However, in 1860, the two regions joined the Kingdom of Italy. In 1947, they became a single region. Let’s get to know a little more about some of the main cities.

Bologna

An incredible city that is home to the oldest university in Italy, in fact it is considered the oldest university in the Western world. We are talking about the University of Bologna. This marvel was founded in 1088 and had as its illustrious students Francesco Petrarca, one of the greatest Italian scholars, and Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer and mathematician who developed the heliocentric theory, which shows that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Was he intelligent?

But in addition to this intellectual side, Bologna also has a very attractive nightlife, with bars, restaurants and good food. Among the tourist attractions that must be visited are the Two Towers (la Garisenda e degli Asinelli), the Fountain of Neptune, the Basilica of San Petronio, the Sanctuary of San Lucas and the MAMBO (Museum of Modern Art of Bologna). Modena

Did you know that Enzo Ferrari, the owner of the famous Italian racing team, was born in this city? In fact, if you are passionate about or interested in subjects involving the brand, you can visit the beautiful Enzo Ferrari Museum, located in Modena.

In addition, the city, affectionately known as “little Bologna”, offers some really cool places to visit, even though it is smaller than the capital. Piazza del Duomo is one of the most beautiful squares in the country. As for gastronomy, there you will find what is considered to be “the best balsamic vinegar in the world”, as well as an incredible Tortellini.

Parma

Parma is a charming city with several interesting tourist attractions, including the Parco dei 100 laghi (literally translated, the Park of 100 Lakes), which is a preserved environmental area where you can do activities such as trekking or even observe the animals that roam there.

In addition to this wonderful place surrounded by nature, you can also visit places such as the fascinating Castello Torrechiara, which combines Renaissance architecture with medieval features. Are you traveling with children? Then how about having fun in a real labyrinth? In Fontanellato, 16 km from Parma, you will find the Fontanellato o della Masone Labyrinth, the largest labyrinth in the world made of bamboo.

Have you heard of Parma Ham? Yes, the city produces this culinary wonder. And to complete the appetizer, you can enjoy it with another specialty of the city, Parmigiano Reggiano. Yumm, how delicious!

Ravenna

Considered the city where the “Byzantine hand” spared no effort, Ravenna has splendid works of art. In 1996, eight of its monuments were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Baptistery of Neon, the Baptistery of Ariani and the Basilica of San Vitale.

Ravenna is very famous for its mosaics, and is even called the Capital of Mosaics, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the Basilica of Santa Apollinare Nuovo and in the tourist attractions mentioned above you can appreciate this beautiful art.

Fun fact about Ravenna

The city that enchants so many is the place where the remains of the famous Italian poet Dante Alighieri are found. After so many political conflicts, in the mid-1200s, Dante, the “father of the Italian language”, was exiled from his hometown, Florence. Dante tried to return several times during his lifetime, but was never allowed.

However, after his death, and with the recognition of his importance, Florence wanted to take Dante “home” again, but Ravenna never allowed it. Several disputes involving the two cities to decide who would get Dante’s bones took place, but Ravenna, at least in the present day, won.
