With events spread across Milan during the city’s design week, Fuorisalone attracts more and more visitors and presents news in various sectors of decoration, art, furniture and much more. A little about Fuorisalone

Fuorisalone is an annual event that takes place in the most cosmopolitan city in Italy: the charming Milan. Fuorisalone is Milan Design Week and is one of the most celebrated industry events worldwide. This event takes place together with Salone del Mobile and together they define the important Milan Design Week.

Milan Design Week: the incredible Fuorisalone – How did Fuorisalone come about?

Fuorisalone is a set of events distributed in different areas of Milan and does not intend to be a fair event like its “brother”, the Salone del Mobile. Furthermore, it does not have a central organization and is not managed by a single institutional body. It was ‘born’ spontaneously in the early ’80s and came from the desire of companies that work in the furniture and industrial design sector so they could show their creations, but they did not see so many advantages in renting a stand at the Salon del Mobile, especially because of monetary issues. Nowadays, the event expands to many sectors and includes varied sectors such as automotive, technology, telecommunications, art, fashion and food. One of the companies that support Fuorisalone is Studiolabo, which helps interested parties to find space and define dissemination strategies to present their news.

Over the years, the event has won important names as sponsors: Hyundai, the Government of the Lombardy Region, Milan City Hall, among other very important names related to Italian design such as universities, schools of design and architecture.

Milan Design Week: the incredible Fuorisalone – How has COVID-19 altered Fuorisalone’s plans over the past two years?

Well, in 2020 the world was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, it was an atypical year: events were postponed, others canceled and many found the solution to be held online.

An event that also talks about technology, of course, needed to find a solution and an online presentations event was the solution! So, on June 15, 2020, the event reinvented itself and presented its first fully digital version! It worked, by the way: it worked REALLY WELL! In addition to showing its traditional content aimed at market innovations, two new instruments emerged that pleased the public: Fuorisalone TV and Fuorisalone Meets, aimed to connect professionals, the public, and mediators; Also in 2020, for the first time in history, the event left Lombard lands and ended up in eastern lands with the launch of two new channels: Fuorisalone China and Fuorisalone Japan.

Well, let’s go to the events available at Fuorisalone 2022, which take place between June 06 and 12, 2022.

As usual, it will be 2 weeks of events in showrooms and other locations in Milan. On the map below you can have a brief overview of how the event is ‘democratic’ and distributed, being almost all concentrated in the city center. They hold events in strategic locations precisely to facilitate the movement of those who are in Milan and those who are participating in the Salone del Mobile.

FUORISALONE 2022 THEME

After two years without in person events, Fuorisalone chose a very current and, of course, very interesting topic! Two words representing interconnected dimensions affected by the profound changes that are occurring in today’s world were chosen: space and time. How do they relate? How has this changed people’s perception, especially in the post-pandemic reality? How do they express themselves in a way that is visible to us?

Important:

Because there are MANY events available in different neighborhoods of the city, I suggest you choose one or two neighborhoods per day to visit calmly. Hence the importance of organizing your itinerary in advance! Include in your itinerary a quick scheme so you can use the subway: it’s the fastest, most practical and safe way to get from one point to another without any problem!

For those in Milan…

Physical access to events may change, but it is important to know that some events are invite-only, such as press, and are not open to the public; others – open to the public and even free – can apply online.

Therefore, each organizer will define how access to events will be granted (if only with an invitation, purchased tickets, etc). The objective is always to guarantee the safety of the visitor and, therefore, each organizer is free to do as they seem fit.

On the event’s official website you will find ALL the information, you can see who is involved, which companies are part of the initiative and everything you need to be able to organize your trip and your itinerary once you are in Milan. THE OFFICIAL SITE OF FUORISALONE 2022 is complete, intuitive and simple to use. Guys, it’s a LOT of information! Take the opportunity to read the articles: they are magnificent! We could spend days talking about each of them! So I suggest that you take your time to check everything, read a lot and organize your trip in advance, so you can make your favorites list and not miss anything you want to see!

For those who cannot be in Milan and want to participate…

The entire event will be broadcast on the official Fuorisalone website! The main events, when available, will be broadcast through digital channels, and after they go live, they will be uploaded to the website. As with the physical edition, some online events are paid and others are not. The site also offers insights, photos, downloadable attachments, videos, company and designer contacts, and much more! In some cases it will also be possible to virtually visit the showroom through an interactive 3D navigation: it is SUPER ORGANIZED and BEAUTIFUL! Remember that some lectures and chats will also be available live on TV Fuorisalone, which you can access through the official website.

  • Follow the event’s social media! They always update information, publish schedules, provide links, and this can help your organization!

Important:

  • FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO ATTEND THE EVENTS ONLINE, REMEMBER THE TIME ZONE! IN THE MONTH OF THE EVENT, ITALY IS IN SUMMERTIME! SO: ORGANIZE YOURSELF, OK?!
  • And some events are ONLINE ONLY! According to the organizers of the event, they will be available on Fuorisalone TV – and, there, the content is updated daily. It is worth taking a look!

What to expect from Fuorisalone 2022?

A show with an audience record! That’s what organizers expect in the 2022 edition! Below, we have gathered some of the main attractions for you!

The city will be full of events! A party for those who like the theme! In the Monforte/Durini district, you can find several showrooms on Durini, S. Damiano, Borgogna and the surrounding areas. Be sure to stop by the already famous Corso Monforte, where the stores of some brands specializing in lighting are located, such as Flos, Fontana Arte, Foscarini, Atremide, Luceplan, Nemo and Occhio, as well as other well-known names that promise to do their best in their windows and exhibitions! Along Corso Monforte, you will be able to see several brands, literally, shining and offering visitors exclusive pieces!

Antrax also offers a brand new store located on Via S. Damiano 5. On Via Visconti di Modrone 8, you will find the Mariani Design and More showroom that will show the latest from the Mariani Collection, LLADRÓ and FIAM.

In addition to several other amazing stores there, it is worth mentioning the new collections of coverings made by Fuksas from Zambaiti Contract – located on Via Cesare Battisti,

  1. For those who love rugs: Via Borgogna, 8! There you can see the beautiful pieces by Rodolfo Dordoni. Nearby, go to S. Babila Square and, in its surroundings, between Corso Europa and Via Durini, you will find a large number of showrooms, including: Cassina, Ceccotti Collezioni, Barovier & Toso, Molteni & C, Dada, Giorgetti, Porro, Technogym, Natuzzi, Lea Ceramiche and Casamilano.

At Largo Corsia dei Servi, 11 – between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm, you can visit an apartment decorated with all the technological innovations proposed by Protek. Visits by appointment ONLY and, to schedule, you can click HERE!

In the Duomo area, you will find the beautiful Stoneroom Antolini, in Piazza Fontana, 2. On Via Larga, you will find Kristalia’s showrooms and Ernestomeda’s beautiful kitchens. Want to see a kitchen entirely made of 24k gold? Your destination is Maya Oro, also on Via Larga, but at number 4! Follow the path and, after seeing a bit of everything there, visit Design For The Senses’ immersive installation, “Multisensorial Landscapes! – located at Via Gonzaga, 7.

Unmissable, as always, are the facilities located in the beautiful cloisters of the State University. This year’s proposal is Filarete’s Renaissance masterpiece, on Via Festa del Perdono, 7 – which is presented with the theme “Human Spaces”. There you will find installations by great architects and designers such as Queboo, and Whirlpool among others, all curated by NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti students.

The famous Quadrilatero della Moda, of course, could not be left out! At 13 Via Bagutta – you will find the celebrated and elegant Promemoria showroom. On Via della Spiga, 52 – you can see the beautiful exhibition “Shades”, which shows a beautiful collection of lamps designed by George Sowden’s studio for SowdenLight.

For jewelry lovers: visit the Pianegonda showroom, at Via Gesù, 3. There you will find “Precious Harmonies”, with several works carried out by the students of the Masters in Jewelery Design at Istituto Marangoni.

Artemest, at Via Senato, 22 – shows the water theme to visitors in an exhibition full of beauty!

Already between Via Manzoni, Piazza Cavour and Via Turati, near Piazza della Scala, in Piazza S. Fiel, you will find the “Super Pratone”, which is an installation dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the iconic Pratone, designed in 1971 by Ceretti, Derossi & Rosso.

At Via Manzoni, 23 – be sure to visit LAUFEN. They present an incredible proposal that creates a dialogue between art, design, architecture and nature. Here you can see the beautiful collection of Kartell by Laufen, realized in a pop-up installation and with a very interesting virtual space!

After passing through the beautiful 13th century door, arriving at Piazza Cavour, look for number 2: there you will find, thanks to Samsung technologies, state-of-the-art and very innovative audio and video solutions.

Milan is one of the most famous cities when it comes to Italian design: it combines the modern and the old in a super harmonious, almost poetic way! With modern, historic and brand new neighborhoods, Milan has taken on a prominent role along the Fuorisalone not only for the events, but also for the wonderful architecture it offers to the curious eyes that visit the city! Milan is, today, an architectural icon, capable of drawing sighs, smiles, expressions of surprise and delight.

In addition to the very characteristic neighborhoods, exceptional events are also held in various parts of the city – changing from year to year, touring the entire city! The newest and most modern neighborhoods such as Porta Nuova and Porta Volta have been improved with the aim of opening new spaces and, with technology, offering the visitor unique experiences! Events usually take place downtown, in Zona Tortona (in the Porta Genova district, behind the train station); in Ventura Milano Design District (Lambrate), Fabbrica del vapore, in the fantastic Brera district, in the Triennale di Milano area, in the aforementioned Porta Nuova, Porta Volta and also in the Porta Garibaldi district and Corso Como.

BONUS: UNMISSABLE PLACES IN MILAN FOR LOVERS

ARCHITECTURE, ART AND HISTORY!

Milan is a concentration of WONDERFUL buildings, starting with the Duomo of Milan, which dominates the homonymous square and enchants anyone who looks at the Cathedral. However, there is an almost ‘secret’ Milan – which is not always on the list of classic tours – there is a Milan almost entirely made for lovers of architecture, art and history! Shall we visit some places?

The first of these is Villa Necchi Campiglio. The Villa is a house built in 1935 and was designed by the architect Piero Portaluppi. It is a splendid example of modern architecture in the city. Even though it is private, the facade alone is a charm and makes us understand a little about what was the must of the bourgeoisie in the last century.

Two MUST-SEE places are also: the Fondazione Prada, by Rem Koolhaas; and a Milanese classic: the Fondazione Feltrinelli, by Herzog & De Meuron.

Even if you are passing through, be sure to visit Milan’s Triennale and Parco Sempione. – they are icons of the city and they deserve that you check them out, even if it’s only a nod from afar (but a word of advice: if I were you, I would visit them both calmly!)!

If you can, visit the Museo del Novecento, completely renovated by Italo Rota. Also visit the MUDEC museum (Museum of Cultures), by David Chipperfield, and also visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria, considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance signed by Renato Bramante.

Include in the list a walking route along Via Melchiorre Gioia; from there, head to Via de Castilia and stop at the stunning, modern Piazza Gae Aulenti. The highlight of the square is undoubtedly the modern UniCredit building: one of the most modern in the city! It is also there that you will find the infamous Bosco Verticale: a building that will drive anyone crazy!

Another place filled with works of art is the Monumental Cemetery: it is of indescribable beauty! The mausoleums, tombs and sculptures there are beautiful, impossible to choose the most beautiful!

Another charming spot in the city is Piazza Borromeo. There are historic houses, all in Renaissance style; it is SO worth it!

Visit Leonardo Da Vinci’s home! When he went to live in Milan to paint the Sistine Chapel, he was given a small vineyard by Ludovico ‘Il Moro’ Sforza and, they say, Leonardo loved that place until his last day! Today, in that place, is Casa Atellani, signed by the architect Piero Portaluppi in 1922. It deserves a little visit!

The Pinacoteca di Brera is another point that needs to be on your list! It is fantastic, with a charming collection in an unpretentious, but very seductive way! Write down the tip!

Want to stroll around? Via Durini and Via Solferino: beautiful, charming and impressive buildings!

Purchases? There is an it-concept store called Excelsior: anyone who has been to Milan and is involved with art, decoration, architecture, etc., knows this store!   • Stroll through the Navigli district! The neighborhood is full of life, pleasant… A charm! In addition to offering great options for restaurants, bars and local shops!

The Brera neighborhood is famous for its high fashion boutiques, exclusive art galleries and trendy bars – it is north of Piazza Duomo. The characteristic streets are inviting for a stroll without a destination. The main attraction is the Pinacoteca di Brera, where priceless works of art are exhibited – among them, the masterpieces of Raffaello and Mantegna. It is in the southeastern region of Brera that the “fashion quadrilaterale” is located. The region is frequented by VIPs and socialites who spend horrors in the boutiques of brands like Armani, Valentino and Versace, on the outskirts of the elegant “Montenapo” (as the Milanese affectionately call Montenapoleone Street)
