The Galleria dell’Accademia (Academy Gallery), founded in the latter half of the 18th century as an Academy of Fine Arts, initially served as a venue for aspiring artists to study and replicate works from desecrated churches and collections of the Medici and Lorenas families in Florence. In the late 19th century, a decision was made to relocate Michelangelo’s David, previously situated in Piazza della Signoria, for preservation reasons. After considering various options, a section of the Academy of Fine Arts was transformed into a museum, becoming the new “home” for the renowned sculpture.
