Introduction

From the historical point of view, the birth of this museum is very curious. It was created not as a space to display works of art, but as a large office to host a series of magistrates, judges, merchants, that is, important people who owned a position in the government of Florence – hence the origin of the word Uffizi: Offices. The construction of the grand palace of the Uffizi began in 1560 at the request of the Duke of Florence Cosimo I de’Medici. The architect was Giorgio Vasari. Bringing these important people together in one place was important for Cosimo I de’Medici, because that way he could closely control the civil and economic life of the city. The Uffizi Gallery was opened to the public as the first European museum in 1769.

The Gallery’s Various Rooms

The museum is very large and it would be impossible to see all the works in one day. I often compare the Uffizi Gallery with medicines: always in small doses! The museum is divided into several rooms, starting with works from 1200 to 1700 approximately. The rooms follow in chronological order but also according to the source (other Italian cities, other countries like France, Spain, Holland, etc.).

The route inside of the Uffizi Gallery is very fascinating, because it offers us an enormous didactic value through the evolution of art in time. Inside some rooms and in the corridors, we can admire an important collection of ancient Roman statues from the 1st-2nd century BC.

1) Let’s Visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence: VISIT THE ROOMS DEDICATED TO GIOTTO AND GENTILE DA FABRIANO

A must-see is the room dedicated to Giotto, a painter considered the father of Italian painting. In Giotto’s room we can admire three great works (Maestà) by Cimabue, Giotto’s master, Duccio da Boninsegna, a great painter from Siena and of course Giotto’s Maestà. Then, in the room dedicated to the International Gothic, the Adoration of the Magi, of Gentile da Fabriano, reveals to us a true fairy tale.

2) Let’s Visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence: VISIT THE ROOMS OF MADONNA LIPPINA AND BOTTICELLI

In the room dedicated to Filippo Lippi, a famous Madonna col Bambino (Madonna and Child) known as Lippina and Piero della Francesca’s masterpiece: Federico da Montefeltro and his wife Batista Sforza. A special stop at the Botticelli Room with several must-see works: the famous Birth of Venus, Spring, the Adoration of the Magi, where we can admire the painter’s self-portrait.

3) Let’s Visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence: VISIT ROOM 15 DEDICATED TO LEONARDO DA VINCI

In room 15 we will find works by the genius Leonardo da Vinci, such as the Annunciation and the Baptism of Christ, a youth work done together with his master Andrea del Verrocchio.

4) Let’s Visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence: MICHELANGELO, BRONZINO AND CARAVAGGIO ROOM

In the room dedicated to Michelangelo, our eyes are blinded by the warm and bright colors of Tondo Doni, also known as the Holy Family. Also not to be missed are the rooms dedicated to Bronzino, the court painter of Cosimo I, Andrea del Sarto, nicknamed by Vasari “the painter without errors”, Rafael with the “Madonna of the Goldfinch”, Leo X, the room of the painters of Venice, with great Titian works. The last rooms of the gallery are reserved for the works of Caravaggio and his followers. Special attention to Medusa, Bacchus, and the Sacrifice of Isaac.
