But it is possible to organize an average spending in advance. And we’re here to help you with this, since so many readers are concerned about it. Are you ready for it? Introduction

The examples of costs I am going to use today is for ONE person who travels without the intention of using taxis, luxury hotels neither eating in expensive restaurants, finally, these prices will be useful for that tourist who likes to make the best of it, but with a regular (or minimum) expense. I recommend reading the post “How many days do I need to visit Italy?”

The post will be all-purpose, considering:

Food, Accommodation, Public Transports and Tickets to the main monuments. The other expenses – that I consider very personal – will not be considered. I’m sure this post will help you get an idea of how to better plan your expenses!

1) What is the average cost of a day in Italy? FOOD

Now let’s see how much we can spend on food in Italy, having an idea we can plan the average cost for each day.

Estimated values for food:

  • If you are just going to have a snack, like a pizza, a kebab (bread sandwich with various sorts of meat), eat sandwiches in markets or in supermarkets or in the famous fast foods, with 7 to 10 Euros you can feed yourself really well.
  • If you go to lunch or dinner in a restaurant you will pay a touristic menu from about 10 Euros per person (very economical alternative) to about 15 Euros (best alternative – cost benefit).
  • If you prefer lunch or dinner with an à la carte menu, you can consider from 20 to 30 euros per person.
  • PS: I am always considering a traditional restaurant, simple and outside the tourist areas. If you want to go to a restaurant located in a tourist area you can consider at least 40 to 50 Euros per person (according to the restaurant).

Feeding costs per day:

  • If you do it the way I told you to, you’ll probably spend between 30 and 40 Euros a day;
  • If you prefer to save having snacks only, you’ll probably spend between 10 to 15 Euros a day;
  • If you go to lunch and dinner in a restaurant you can consider an average cost of 50 to 60 Euros per day.

NOTE

If you want to save money, you can opt for having a snack for lunch, then you can take advantage of the time for the tours and have a great dinner at night (and a well-deserved rest) even because Italy is one of the most famous countries in the world for its gastronomy!

Tips:

Important

  • Many people say they spend 80 Euros a day. Living in Italy and travelling a lot, I can assure you that this sum only on food is because you have really chosen an “important” place or a place located near some tourist monument (read my post: how to save on food in Italy).
  • I think it’s important to repeat this concept and say that this post is for people who travel spending with basic needs, with no luxury, so by choosing carefully where to eat, you really will spend the necessary. That doesn’t mean you’ll eat badly, on the contrary: sometimes you’ll find places where you’ll eat very well and pay what’s fair.

2)What is the average cost of a day in Italy? PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Taking Rome as example, a full day public transport ticket costs 7,00 Euros and this rate is very similar in the main Italian cities, so you can consider this average cost per day – remembering that in the smaller cities, you can take your tours walking. For more information read also Transport in Italy.

3) What is the average cost of a day in Italy? ACCOMMODATION

Choosing between a B&B, a hostel or a 3, or 4 or 5 star hotel (read here about the differences in hotel categories in Italy), will depend on the city you are visiting, the location of the hotel and the duration of your trip. All these factors will make the accommodation rates very different.

But, in general, considering an accommodation in a regular 3-star tourist structure, in average season, in a hotel that is not so central, our average spending per person will be around 50 Euros. If you are staying in a hostel this expense can be 30 Euros. You want to know more details about accommodation in Italy? So read our posts about it clicking here!

Important

Obviously when I say 50 Euros, I am always calculating an average of 2 people in a room, that is, an average of 100 Euros for the room in a 3-star structure in an area that is not totally close to the main tourist monuments of the city that you’re visiting.

4)What is the average cost of a day in Italy? MONUMENTS

It depends on which monument you want to visit; for example in Rome if you visit the Coliseum and the Roman Forum you will spend 16 Euros (buying directly online, a little more, 18 Euros). So if you go to visit two monuments we have an average spend of 30 Euros per day, considering that some days you will not visit places that are paid to enter. 5) What is the average cost of a day in Italy? SUMMARY OF EXPENSES

How much are we spending anyway? Considering the average prices detailed in our post, check below the Summary of Expenses.

  • Food: € 30,00 considering a snack for lunch and dinner  in an out-of-town restaurant
  • Transportation: € 70 public transport ticket: train and bus
  • Accommodation: € 50,00 i.e. on average 100 Euros for a double room
  • Monuments: € 30,00 considering on average 2 monuments
  • Grand Total : € 117,00

Other tours…

Now you ask me: what about travel expenses from one city to another? As this varies a lot according to the tour you are going to do, such as: number of cities and type of transports you are going to choose to travel, we will not be able to detail these costs here. But I recommend you to read our post How much will I spend on a trip to Italy? In this post you will be able to know the costs of Train Tickets and Car Rental.
