In three days, you can visit the city in a “shallow” way, but you can see the most important monuments.

So… First things first: the first thing you should do when you arrive in Rome is to buy a city map with the main sights of Rome. You can find it in any shop or “edicola,” but let me give you a tip: ask your hotel reception if they have a map of the city. Probably they’ll do, and there’s a huge chance to be a tourism map, which means that all the important spots will be highlighted already! If you follow my suggestion, have your map in hand all the time; you will surely be able to see the best of the “eternal” city. That said, let’s move on…

1) What to visit in Rome in 3 days? FIRST DAY

We’re going to our first day in Rome.

Imperial and Baroque Rome

In the morning, we will go down the subway “Colosseo” and start the day by passing by the Circus Massimo, Bocca della Verità, and then we will follow the visit through Imperial Rome, getting to know the Coliseum, Paladin, Roman Forum, Imperial Forum, Altar of the Homeland, and Capitoline Hill.

Lunch in the Imperial Zone

Stop for lunch at a good central restaurant. I remember that Italy is famous for its food, so if you have the time, it is always worth choosing a good restaurant to enjoy one of the tastiest foods in the world. See “Where to eat well in Rome?“. We will follow our tour by taking the subway and getting off at the “Barberini” stop; from there, we will continue visiting Rome, going to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Teatro Marcelo, Quirinale, Piazza Spagna and Piazza del Popolo.

2) What to visit in Rome in 3 days? SECOND DAY

We are heading ahead to our second day in Rome.

Vatican Museums: Basilica San Pietro, Castel Sant’ Angelo and Trastevere

The subway stops for that day will be Ottaviano and Piramide.

The Vatican is the seat of the Catholic Church, consisting of a walled enclave inside the city of Rome, the capital of Italy. With approximately 44 hectares of area and a population of just over 800 inhabitants, it is the smallest country in the world.

Vatican Museum

In the morning, we will get off at the “Ottaviano” subway station and take a walk to the Vatican Museum; I highly recommend buying the tickets in advance so you won’t have to waste your time in a kilometric line to buy your ticket in loco. We will visit the museum that has one of the most important art collections in the world, and we will visit the famous Capella Sistina; we will see the “Stanze di Raffaello” as well.

San Pietro Basilica (St. Peter’s Basilica)

The museum’s Pinacoteca offers a small but precious collection of works by Raffaello, Tiziano, and Leonardo. I suggest you take at least three or four hours to visit the museum in a very peaceful way; if you’re in a hurry, you won’t enjoy the beauties you find there properly! At the end of the tour, we will visit the “Piazza di San Pietro” and the majestic Basilica of St. Peter, the destinations of pilgrims from all over the world. The basilica will amaze you! Be sure about that!

Castel Sant’ Angelo

We will follow the visit by going to Castel Sant’Angelo, an imposing fortress built in 139 AD to be the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, but which over the centuries has been used for other reasons, such as refuge for popes during political uprisings.

Trastevere

Finally, to end this wonderful day, I recommend you have dinner in the famous neighborhood of Trastevere, one of the oldest and most picturesque in Rome. Also read “What to do for the night in Rome?

3) What to visit in Rome in 3 days? THIRD DAY

We’re going to our third day in Rome. The subway stops we will use today will be: Termini, San Giovanni, and San Paolo Fuori Muri. Finally, on this last day, we will visit the other monuments considered the “most important” in Rome, and we will be able to say that the “TOP OF THE TOP” of the eternal city is really at each point, in each small church, fountain, square, or important monument.

Christian Rome

After breakfast, we will dedicate a great part of our day to knowing about Christian Rome: the 3 papal or patriarchal basilicas: St. John Lateran Church (San Giovanni station), which is considered the “mother” of all the churches in the world, with the Holy Staircase, used by Jesus to enter the room of his interrogation with Pontius Pilate before the crucifixion; then we will know the Basilica of St. Paul Fuori Le Mura (San Paolo Fuori Le Mura station): Where you will find the tomb of the Apostle Paul; and to finish this tour, we will visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore (Termini station), built between 432 and 440 during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus III and dedicated to the cult of Mary, Mother of God, whose dogma of the Divine Motherhood had just been declared by the Council of Ephesus 431.

Via Appia

A stop for lunch, and in the afternoon we will continue the visit by going to Via Appia, one of the main roads of ancient Rome. We will also visit the Tomb of San Calisto, where you will see the famous Crypt of the Popes. And finally, if you still have time and mood, we can make a brief visit to the Terme di Caracalla, which was built between 212 and 217 during the Roman Emperor’s rule and is a perfect example of the great imperial spas. The Via Apia has kilometers, so to visit it, it is necessary to rent a bike. The ideal would be to have a half day to dedicate to walking calmly along this famous road, but for those who don’t have time available, I suggest having a driver who will take you as close as possible to the main monuments. As a second possibility for those who are not interested in visiting Christian Rome and/or Via Apia, it would be interesting to take the last day to visit some of the famous Roman places during your stay in Rome on a full-day tour with a private driver (or rented car).
