What to visit in Calabria in four days?

From north to south, Italy is a peninsula to discover and appreciate! Even the “tip of the boot” is occupied by a region rich in history and culture, with beautiful resorts, places with spectacular natural beauty, and an enviable culinary tradition. This is what we will do with a four-day trip through this wonderful region, using a car as a means of transport. At this point, you just have to start the tour in the beautiful city of Reggio Calabria. What to visit in Calabria in four days? Our Itinerary

We will take you on a four-day trip through this wonderful region using public means of transport (when possible). At this point, you just have to start the tour of the beautiful city of Reggio Calabria.

Our itinerary will be done all of it with Public Transport, but my advice is to do this itinerary with a rented car or with a local guide (ask for a quotation without commitment by clicking here) so you don’t waste too much time, because the transport through the south of Italy is not so accessible for those who have little travel time.

1) What to visit in Calabria in four days? FIRST DAY

First day: arrival at Reggio Calabria airport, transfer by private bus to the hotel to leave your luggage and then immediately a tour of the city.

The visit can start at the Archaeological Museum, a historic site and an important palace for the conservation of Italian culture, which possesses one of the most important collections of artifacts from ancient Greece and is home to the famous Riace Bronzes.

Lunch break, and let’s continue the tour!

After visiting the museum, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant, and in the afternoon visit the famous Orla Falcomatà. The coast is for locals and tourists, a stage for walking and jogging, against the backdrop of beautiful canal landscapes, like scenes from a theater, which changes with the seasons and which has the wind always present in the area; this scenario was defined by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio as “the most beautiful kilometer in Italy.”. Continue the tour by visiting the cathedral and the botanical garden. In the evening, enjoy a nice dinner and then go to bed.

2) What to visit in Calabria in four days? SECOND DAY

After a good breakfast, we leave the hotel to arrive at Reggio Calabria Station and, by train, we go to Scilla for a short visit and then to Tropea, where we will spend the night.

We arrived in Scilla! Scilla, by legend, is considered the nymph of the strait, who, together with Cariddi, terrified sailors. Now, however, Scilla is no longer scary, in fact, with the beauty of her territory, it strives to satisfy a large number of visitors.

Tour in Scilla

After admiring its charming narrow streets and colorful houses crammed together, we head to Ruffo Castle, which is also the symbol of Scilla. Born as a fortress on the cliff that clings to the city, it was fought over between the Tyrrhenian people and the tyrants of Reggio until the third century BC.

Heading to Tropea

At this point, we took the train to reach beautiful Tropea, the pride of Calabria. Once you reach this picturesque village, Tropea, with its typical marina architecture and numerous remains of Roman buildings, palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries with Spanish style on balconies, doors, and gardens that open onto squares and alleys,.

Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola

Not to be missed is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, known for being a Benedictine sanctuary of medieval origin, later transformed into a basilica with three Renaissance arches, a facade rebuilt after the 1905 earthquake and placed on a promontory, which has a spectacular view. We stop at a typical local restaurant downtown for a delicious dinner, a digestion walk, and then bed.

3) What to visit in Calabria in four days? THIRD DAY

For today I will leave two alternatives! The first alternative is to spend the day getting to know Tropea, relaxing on the beautiful beaches of the region, and taking a leisurely tour. The second alternative is to take a day trip to the famous Aeolian Islands. To visit the Aeolian Islands, just go to the Port of Tropea very early (before 08:00) and take one of the boats that offer a 1-day tour of the island. My advice

On the way back from the Aeolian Islands Tour, return to your hotel in Tropea for a short rest, then return to the Historic Center of Tropea for dinner and try the city’s famous red onion, a typical Tropea dish. Then walk freely around the city, sipping your delicious gelato.

4) What to visit in Calabria in four days? FOURTH DAY

Last day in Tropea: After a good breakfast in the beautiful Tropea, in the morning we will do a tour in Capo Vaticano and in the afternoon we will do a tour in Tropea and enjoy a little more beach. Good to Know: If you decide to do only Tropea the day before, leave today just to enjoy Capo Vaticano and relax on the beaches.

Tour in Capo Vaticano

The Capo Vaticano promontory is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, opposite Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands. It extends into the municipality of Ricadi, and thanks to its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, rich in fish, it is one of the most beautiful coasts in Italy. But if you want to relax, I advise you to take a boat trip along the coast, just go to the Port of Tropea and take a tourist boat for a half-day tour. If the tour is short, you can go back to Tropea, enjoy the city a little more, and relax on the beach.

Tour in Tropea

Tropea was chosen as the most beautiful village in Italy in the contest “Il Borgo dei Borghi,”  held annually by the Italian broadcaster Rai. Tropea has typical maritime and medieval architecture that is imposing, with numerous remains of Romanesque buildings, palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries in Spanish style, with balconies, doors, and gardens that open onto the squares and alleys of Tropea. Find out all about Tropea here!

Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola

A must on this tour is to visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, known for being a Benedictine sanctuary of medieval origin, later transformed into a basilica, with three Renaissance arches, a facade rebuilt after the 1905 earthquake and placed on a promontory, which has a spectacular view.
