The COVID-19 pandemic changed a lot of plans to all of us. Since 2020, some countries closed their borders and, in the meanwhile, many of them opted for the vaccine.We’re in May 2021 and the summer is around the corner. Due the restrictions, the tourism in Italy, in the last months, was directly affected caused a huge economic problem to the segment. But, life goes on, and Italy is ready to reopen and welcome those who want to visit this amazing country. As we know USA is doing a great work under Biden administration and the vaccine campaign is going great.

IMPORTANT NOTE: E.U. AGREED TO REOPEN ITS BORDERS TO VISITORS WHO ARE FULLY VACCINATED OR THOSE COMING FROM COUNTRIES CONSIDERED SAFE FROM COVID-19, INCLUDING USA.

Italy and USA are negotiating a health pass to be released by the middle of May, a month before the expected launch of the EU pass, and this will reopen the door to those who want to come to Italy from USA. Although no other details were released yet (since they’re still working on it!), this, definitely, is a huge step for the tourists.

When US citizen can travel to Italy? Italy regions are divided in a color-coded system—

white (very low risk), yellow (low risk), orange (high risk) and red (very high risk) — depending on transmission rates, availability of hospital rooms, ICU beds and other parameters. Different restrictive measures apply to each zone and those data is updated every single day.

At this moment, all Italians airports are open.

Important to know: even if you’re vaccinated, and has a negative test to COVID-19, it is mandatory to wear a mask in public places in Italy (indoors and outdoors). In Lazio, where we find Rome, it is mandatory to wear a mask outdoors in any situation.

The mask is not required if:

you’re carrying out sports activities
children under the age of 6
people with disabilities or conditions incompatible with the use of a mask; carers or care workers are not obliged to wear masks, in the event that the mask makes it impossible to interact between carers / care workers and persons with disabilities.

The use of the mask is also recommended inside houses and/or in the presence of non-cohabiting people.
It is, still, mandatory to maintain the safe distance of at least one meter from non-cohabiting people. Also note that some Squares or Streets may be closed to the public throughout certain time slots to avoid crowds, but the access to these squares or streets is allowed only to reach open shops, hotels and private houses. Italy also recommended the tourists to download the Immuni app, created by the Ministry of Health and the Minister of Technological Innovation to limit the spread of Covid-19.

But what is it this app?

The app is recommended to all foreign citizens who arrive in Italy. The Immuni app tracks contacts between people and warns users potentially exposed to the SARS- CoV-2 virus. The app works with the Bluetooth Low Energy Technology, and it consumes almost nothing of you cell phone battery, plus, it does not involve any identification or geolocation of the user, and is completely anonymous, your data won’t be share with other users, since the app keeps data in encrypted form on Italian servers and guarantee your full privacy.

If a foreign citizen has symptoms of COVID-19, or exposed themselves, he or she can call 118 (in case of emergency) or call the national toll-free number 1500. In this service you will find all the information of ‘what to do’ and ‘who you have to look for’. The app will also inform the tourist AFTER he or she leaves Italy. All foreign citizens should download the Immuni app. The service is available, for free, from the Apple and Google stores in different languages: English, French, German, and Spanish.

To download from the App Store you need an at least 6s or SE (1st generation) IPhone model and the 13.5 IOS version or higher.
From Google Play, your smartphone must have an Android 6 system or higher.

Does Italy have any dates to reopen?

Yes! From May 16 until July 30.

What vaccines are accepted in Italy?

The three vaccines used by USA are accepted for those who want to travel to Italy: Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine. NOTE: even if you’re vaccinated, you can still get and spread the virus, that’s why it is so important to keep and respect the mains procedures of safety, such as washing your hands regularly, using the mask and the alcohol gel.

I live in USA, I got the vaccine, but I AM NOT an US Citizen: can I travel to Italy?

Yes, but only with a negative COVID-test and only through COVID-tested flights from the U.S. to Italy; the travelers are required to complete a series of mandatory testing, before departure and on arrival, regardless of vaccination status.

I was infected with COVID a few months ago, but I’m not vaccinated yet: can I travel to Italy?

Yes, you can! – The Italian authorities gave a free pass to those coming from USA to travel without being vaccinated, but you will need a PCR negative test up to 72 hours before departure, take a rapid test at the airport just before boarding, and take a second rapid test on arrival in Italy

Do I need a COVID negative test to enter in Italy even if I took the vaccine?

Yes! You will need a test up to 72 hours before departure, take a rapid test at the airport just before boarding, and take a second rapid test on arrival in Italy. As we said before, even if you’re vaccinated, you still need to respect the basic measures to avoid getting and spreading COVID such as wearing the mask, washing your hands, etc. Good to know: the COVID-tested flights will be operated by Delta, United and American Airlines. The COVID-tested flights departing from USA and arriving in Italy are:

• Atlanta – Roma Fiumicino
• New York – Roma Fiumicino
• Atlanta – Milano Malpensa
• New York – Milano Malpensa

Special obligations for passengers:

Passengers on flights from international airports of United States of America (international airports in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York “John Fitzgerald Kennedy” and “Newark-Liberty”, Philadelphia, Washington DC) are also subjected to molecular (RT PCR) or antigenic tests by means of a swab upon arrival at international airports of: Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Naples Capodichino, Marco Polo of Venice.

Yes, you can since the EU accepted the terms together!

Who cannot travel to Italy from USA?

People who have been to Brazil, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka in the last 15 days ARE NOT ALLOWED to travel from USA to Italy.

What about kids?

Yes, they can – but they will also need to get the PCR test.

Does Italy have the pandemic under control?

Not completely, but the cases numbers and deaths decreased a lot in the last few weeks, which is the reason why USA feels safe to negotiate tourist travels with us.

Will I need a test to reenter in the USA after my holydays in Italy?

Yes, you will! TIP: when you come back home we suggest you to avoid contact with people who were not vaccinated yet for, at least, 14 days.
