A little of Pompeii’s History

The city of Pompeii was founded in the 7th century B.C. by the Osco’s at the mouth of the river Sarno and began to have contact with the Roman culture in the 3rd century B.C. until it was transformed in the year 80 B.C. into a typical Roman city named Colony Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum. The ‘end’ of the city took place on the fateful August 24th of 79 A.D. when Vesuvius erupted in a violent way and everyone realized that the mountain behind the city was, actually, a volcano. Pompeii was totally destroyed by the rain of pyroclastic fragments and ashes, and was buried for 1700 years, when by chance it was found. Learn how to go to Pompeii from Rome!

Obviously what most attracts the curiosity in Pompeii is the presence of the people who died because of Vesuvius. In the second half of the 19th century, the director of the excavations was Fiorelli, who understood that the holes with human remains were spaces left by decomposed bodies. To conserve the bodies, he decided with his team to injected liquid plaster inside, and today we have the molds of Pompeian’s as they were at the time of their death. That is why, and for so many other reasons, you can only know what I’m talking about by visiting this incredible city, where you will feel like you are walking inside an open history book on August 24th of 79 A.D.
