1) How to get around in Italy? BY AIRPLANE

The big Italian cities have airports with domestic and international flights. In Rome, Leonardo da Vinci airport, better known as Fiumicino and in Milan, Malpensa Airport, are the main airports for long-haul flights. Another important airport is Venice’s Marco Polo! As for national flights and flights from Europe, the main ones are: Linate Airport (Milan), Marco Polo (Venice) Torino Caselle (Torino), Internazionale Capodichino Airport (Naples), Galileo Galilei Airport (Pisa) Internazionale Falcone Borsellino Airport (Palermo), Lamezia Terme Airport (for Calabria). 2) How to get around in Italy? BY TRAIN

Trains arriving in Italy from other parts of Europe cross wonderful landscapes, such as the Alps. In my opinion, the best form of transport to travel the Italian territory is the train. Mainly to the north and center of Italy, where this transport works very well. In the south of Italy, the best transport is the rental car. See the table below to get an idea of the average price of some high speed train tickets. By buying the ticket in advance you can save between 70 and 50%! Buy in advance !!!

High Speed Train

The main tourist cities are usually located, with a high speed train, at least one hour and a half journey between them. Consider that the airports are always outside the big cities and to reach the center, it always takes an average of 45 minutes to one hour, so, quite often with that time, using a high speed train, we manage to move from another city. Where can I leave my luggage at Italian railway stations or airports?

High-speed trains always cost more than intercity trains or regional trains, but they are always cleaner, more comfortable and obviously faster than other trains. Read the post What is the difference between trains in Italy?

Important

If you want to save on this transport, you should always book in advance or travel with the most economical options: intercity or regional trains (they make more stops and take much longer).
At railway stations, you will always find timetables on a large panel or printed on the wall.
They are usually punctual and comfortable (especially high-speed trains), but in the high tourist season they can fill up easily, so it is important to buy tickets in advance.

3) How to get around in Italy? BY CAR

Traveling by car is the best means of transport when we have more time at our disposal, or when we are going to visit southern Italy, or when we want to visit small towns, which are usually located between the major tourist cities. And to get there you need a car or bus.

Advantages

You will be able to stay in hotels outside the city, that means a lot of savings. The most expensive hotels are always central ones, so it is worth staying outside the centers, taking the car and going to a place where you can take the best means of transport to visit city centers such as: subway or bus.
Most hotels and resorts outside cities are more beautiful and romantic.
You will be able to visit some places that without a car would be very difficult to visit, such as the Amalfi Coast, Apulia and Calabria.
As well as getting to know the hidden villages in the world, less touristic, precisely because of the difficulty of reaching them, but which are beautiful. There you will be able to see the life of the local people and so often find those restaurants where they will really taste the “Italian cuisine”.
You will be able to stop to take special photos and enjoy the scenery. You will also be able to stop for tastings at the farms that are on the roads. Anyway be a traveler and not a tourist. So you can enjoy every moment of the trip with the right time and without running from one part to the other!

Disadvantages

High gas prices, tolls (mainly in Northern Italy) and finding parking spaces (in big cities), in addition to hotel parking prices (some charge).

It is not advisable to use the car to travel in the centers of large cities (such as Rome, Siena, Firenze, Milan) almost all of these cities have access areas that are not allowed for people who are not from the place, that means that entering with your car you will pay a very high fine !! That is why it is important to park your car outside these areas and take another alternative means of transport to be able to travel with much more tranquility and obviously saving money. Tips

It is advisable to always book the car before arriving in Italy, prices are always better than booking directly when you arrive. Not to mention that you may have more possibilities to choose the car.
I also think it is important to take out full insurance, contrary to popular belief, vehicle theft is increasing in Italy.
If you don’t have these documents: DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ ALSO: DO I NEED THE IDL TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
To finish! If you have little time, for example from 7 to 10 days, I find it more interesting to travel with the high speed train. It is certainly much faster and will end up being cheaper than renting a car (and other expenses such as parking, gas and tolls).

4) How to get around in Italy? BY BUS

Long-distance buses, in Italian “pullman”, usually cost less than trains. They depart from a train or bus station and there are several companies operating in the various locations. I advise it as a second alternative to the train and if you have more time at your disposal. Anyway in southern Italy, this means of transport is often better than the train, even to be able to transport your luggage more easily.

5) How to get around in Italy? BY FERRYBOAT

Precisely because there are so many islands off the coast, the Ferryboat system is very developed. There are several options that depart, for example, from Naples and Sorrento to Capri, and to Ischia and other smaller islands. Ferries to Sicily also depart from Naples. To go to Sardinia the ferry departs from Civitavecchia (about 82 kilometers from Rome), Livorno and Genoa. There are also possibilities to go to Greece from Brindisi or to Malta from Sicily.
Especially in the summer, we advise you to make reservations in advance because it is the peak season for these areas and Italians travel a lot to these areas, using this type of transport.
