As the name says, the Cathedral is dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus and the flower is a link to the “giglio” (flor-de-liz) symbol of Florence, in other words, it is the city of Florence itself, besides being always the fruit of Mary, that is, Jesus. 1) Let´s visit the Florence Cathedral? ABOUT CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Saint Mary of the Flower) is one of the symbols of Florence. Built from 1296, over the centuries it has undergone many changes until its completion. Its dimensions are titanic which made it considered the largest church in Europe at the time of its construction: 153 meters long, 90 meters wide and 90 meters high from the floor to the lantern – from the floor to the end of the lantern height is 115 meters. Dome Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi

It is possible to climb the huge dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, built over 16 years (1420-1436). Brunelleschi’s work is still known as the largest existing dome made of masonry with its 45.5 meters in diameter. During the ascent of the dome it is possible to admire a magnificent spectacle very close: a huge fresco of the Last Judgment made by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari between the years 1572 and 1579.

Entrance to Florence Cathedral is free and usually during the week the opening is from 10 am to 5 pm, but it is always good to confirm the time on the official website of the Cathedral as the time can be modified due to religious celebrations. On Sundays the Cathedral usually opens after 1:30 pm.

Admission to the Duomo is free, but if you want to visit the Baptistery, the Duomo Museum, climb the dome and Giotto’s bell tower, the single ticket with a 24-hour validity costs 18 Euros. If you feel strong enough and don’t suffer from panic or vertigo, the challenge is to overcome the 463 narrow steps and stairs, and climb the dome: the view is unforgettable and beautiful !!! Hotels that I recommend in Oltrarno

Always staying very close to the Historic Center, you can also stay in Oltrarno, close to the most characteristic craft shops in the whole city and much more. The area is perfect for those who want quiet accommodation and for those who want to breathe the real Florentine atmosphere. At the same time, you will be close to the center of Florence, a short walk from the main monuments, squares, churches, restaurants, shops and museums.

Hotels that I recommend in Santa Maria Novella

Another interesting neighborhood to stay is Santa Maria Novella. This is a particularly exclusive area because of the proximity to the station (great if you want to do a lot of tours leaving from Florence) and the famous Church of Santa Maria Novella, a very important reference in Florence.

Another neighborhood where you can stay is Santa Croce, where the homonymous church is located. This area, located in the southeastern part of the historic center, is close to the most interesting monuments and has its fulcrum in the church of Santa Croce. Among the scenic palaces in this district, there are many hotels that can accommodate you for a wonderful weekend in Florence.

Another economic possibility, where you can stay in Florence, is Campo di Marte; in this area there are several well-equipped and affordable hotels. Campo di Marte has its own train station where several regional and high-speed trains stop, with which you can easily reach other Tuscan cities and major cities in Italy.
