Introduction
Unlike other cities, where I left the option to go by bus, I do not recommend this transport to go to Florence because there are other better ways to visit Florence from Rome. Following our itinerary options, I am sure you will get to know the best of the Renaissance city par excellence! How to get to Florence from Rome? Your choice of transportation will depend on what you are looking for! Come on! Let me help you! Come with me 😉
1) How to go to Florence from Rome? BY TRAIN
Florence is located 280 kilometers from Rome. Using this transport to go to Florence means spending an average of 02:30 hours (without traffic) to go, that is, between a round trip and at least 5 hours driving. Considering that this city really has so many things to see, I don’t think it’s worth spending your time like that, do you? The best way to visit it is with a high-speed train. Almost every half hour, a train leaves from Rome to Florence. You must take the train at the Termini train station in Rome and get off at the Santa Maria Novella train station (center of Florence), where you can start your tour.
Do you want to visit Florence alone and in freedom?
I advise, on arrival in Florence, to buy a map that is sold at any newsstand and follow the itinerary suggested below. See also the two types of trains that you will find when buying the ticket.
- Treno Regionale veloce: Travel time: 03:30 minutes.
- Treno Alta velocitá: Travel time: 01:30 minutes.
For obvious reasons, I advise you to go and return with the high speed train. The time you will save will be used for the tours and I believe the difference you will overpay will be worth it!! Another detail worth mentioning: get ready because, usually, the regional railway trains are very bad and sometimes very dirty, so don’t create high expectations! If you use the train, always choose the high-speed train to avoid this type of problem.

Trenitalia is the main Italian company dedicated to the management of rail transport. Find out here: “What is the difference between trains in Italy?“. Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot! To learn more, read our post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?“.
2) How to go to Florence from Rome? WITH A GROUP TOUR
People, this is the best option for those who do not want to worry about the bus or train schedule, do not want to worry about the fact of “calculating” if there is time to go back and forth, and do not want a headache with possible delays . Anyway, it’s wonderful for those who just want to enjoy the beauty of this incredible place with safety, convenience and tranquility!
The group tour is a perfect solution for those who do not want to spend so much (with a private tour, for example), for those who do not like to travel alone or for those who do not like to drive (or cannot!). Remember that to drive in Italy, you NEED an international driver’s license, ok? Pay attention to this! (Read here how to issue the PID).

- IDEAL option if you are alone, as a couple or with up to seven friends;
- Save on the time you would spend going to the train stations to take the trains, or with transportation to reach the tourist places to be visited;

- If you are with elderly people or people with limited mobility, this option is ideal, as it requires little movement and, when necessary, you will have all the necessary assistance.
