1) How to get from Naples to the Amalfi Coast? WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The nearest airport to the Amalfi Coast is Capodichino International Airport. If you disembark here and want to go straight to the Amalfi Coast, however, you need to take the train from Naples central station. The main station is Napoli Centrale, but Piazza Garibaldi station also offers connections to the Amalfi Coast.

From Naples Airport to Napoli Central Station…

To reach Napoli Centrale Station from Naples Airport, you can take the AliBus bus or, depending on the amount of luggage, take a taxi or take a transfer. If you prefer to go directly by bus, you also have the option of using the ‘Curreri’ bus. The trip takes 1:30 and costs 10 euros; the bus stop is in Sorrento.

From Naples Central Station (Napoli Centrale) there are several alternatives for ALL cities on the Amalfi Coast!

From Varco Immacolatella to the cities of the Amalfi Coast by bus

If you want to go to Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, and Vietri sul Mare, when leaving the central station, you can go to Varco Immacolatella (the pier of the port of Naples) by taxi or train. From there, a SITA bus will take you to the cities mentioned above. The trip takes approximately 2 hours, and the ticket costs 4 euros.

Another Alternative…

Alternatively, you can also take the local train from Salerno station or use the Circumvesuviana (regional train), which takes you to Sorrento in just over an hour. The ticket costs 3.20 euros. Remember that from Sorrento, it is necessary to use the mentioned Sita buses if your final destination is Positano or Amalfi.

Between April and October, you can travel from Naples to the Amalfi Coast by boat or ferry; most of them depart from the Salerno sea station (use the train if you are in Naples to go to the port of Salerno) and dock in the cities of Positano and Amalfi (where they also depart for their return). The starting point in Salerno is at Piazza Concordia, opposite the train station. Some maritime connections also leave from Sorrento. The boat trip takes about 50 minutes and costs around 20 euros.

For families with young children and elderly people, it ends up being very tiring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT;
Having to adapt to the fixed timetables of round-trip trains;
Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or money you will spend extra on taxi once you arrive at your destination;
Another detail worth mentioning: get ready, because the regional railway trains are usually very bad and sometimes very dirty, so do not create high expectations! 2) How to get from Naples to the Amalfi Coast? WITH THE CAR

If you are driving, you can use the roads that I detail below.

Coming from the north, use the A3 Napoli-Salerno highway and exit at Vietri sul Mare; then take the SS163 highway, which leads to Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, and Amalfi.
Coming from the south, use the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway and exit at Vietri sul Mare. From here, take the SS163 highway that leads to Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, and Amalfi.

Traveling by car in Italy

A little history of this wonderful area!

The Middle Ages also received the influences of the Mediterranean East, thanks to the trade between Amalfi and all the lands of the Duchy, which went from Vietri sul Mare to the already famous island of Capri. The region, once dominated by Byzantine ports, is now dominated by legends! Historically, the Amalfi Coast saw its first settlements during the 1st century AD, when some Roman patrician families founded their villages in the region, initiating the coastal population; so many others chose to live in the mountains that, even far from the coast, offered good access to the sea. Even today, traces of old buildings are preserved, especially in Minori, Positano, and Tramonti.

The city of Amalfi

The city of Amalfi officially appears in history in 596, in a letter from Pope Gregory the Great to the Bishop of Amalfi, Pomerio; the text refers to Amalfi as a “castrum,” which is an advanced place of defense, and, in fact, that was its function. The territory of the Republic included the entire coastal stretch between Cetara and Positano, the island of Capri, and the Sirenuse archipelago; inland, its domain passed the Lattari mountains and included the territories of Lettere, Gragnano, and Pimonte. With immense castles and forts, borders were defended with all their might. The Republic has been governed over the centuries and has undergone several ‘powers’: committees (committees), mayors, imperial patricians, and, finally, dukes.

A little more about Amalfi…

Amalfi was already known since the 8th century because of its trade with the lands of Africa, Syria, and mainly Byzantium, where the largest colony of Amalfi was located. However, as life is not always a bed of roses, the changing political situation in the Mediterranean, the Norman conquest of the duchy during the 12th century (Kingdom of Sicily), and the repeated assaults of the pisanos (1135 and 1137) made the immense commercial potential of Amalfi decay. From that moment on, the only market with which Amalfi had contact was that of southern Italy.

After this period, during the domination of the Anjou over the city of Amalfi, the ecclesial exponent grows here: Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio ordered the construction of the Cloister of Paradise and finished the bell tower of the Cathedral. At the same time, innovations in the maritime field characterize and re-establish Amalfi trade.

Naples, for its part, is also rich in history and culture! The history of the city begins with the legends of Partenope, Ligeia, and Leucosia, who, soon after being defeated by Ulysses, threw themselves into the sea in despair. The sea carried their floating bodies to the mouth of the Sebeto River, where the Greeks would later have founded Neapolis (Naples).

The Duchy of Naples took place in 536 BC, and Naples was conquered by the Byzantines during the Gothic War, remaining in the hands of the empire during the subsequent Lombard invasion and becoming an autonomous duchy. The first duke was Basilio, named in 660–61 by the Byzantine emperor Constantine.

Naples has undergone several domains, and the historical heritage of people who passed through it is visible throughout the region: the Normans, Suebi, Aragonese, and others were part of the history of this place, which is so magical and full of culture.
