Museums with free entry in Italy

When we talk about Italy, it is inevitable that we think of its magnificent cuisine, its wines renowned and appreciated worldwide, and – obviously – its entire history. Appreciators of art and culture, the country is home to memories of yesteryear, unique memories of peoples, cultures, facts and people that made Italy what it is today. Full of museums, Italy values, preserves and encourages its culture, and one of the most effective ways to promote this action was by offering visitors some days of the year with free access. Today I tell you about the Museums with free entry in Italy. Our introduction

Italian museums are famous all over the world, and several of them present us with an “illustrated” story that tells a trajectory of glory, pain, resilience, and art, a lot of art! Italy has received countless peoples in its territory over the centuries and all the heritage left by them has been incredibly preserved.

Several of these testimonials are spread over the more than 4,000 museums in Italy and some of them offer free admission on certain days of the year. What are they and how does it work? You will learn right now! Also read: How to Plan a trip to Italy?

Frequently Asked Questions

First of all, let’s clear up some very common questions.

How do I get a free day ticket?

Only in loco. It is not possible to book tickets online for free access days to museums that are on the free list, so a word of advice: wake up early and go to the ticket office, as tickets sell out quickly and there is a visitor limit allowed determined by each museum.

Are the museums accessible for wheelchair users or people with strollers?

Not all of them, but the vast majority yes!

Is the ticket valid for the day only?

Yes! There is no possibility to reuse it after entering and leaving the museum.

Have all museums adopted the project?

No, as there is no obligation on it for any of them.

Does the project take place all year round?

Yes, but it is worth remembering that if Sunday coincides with a holiday, such as Easter or Christmas, for example, the museum will not open!

1) Free museums on the first Sunday of every month

In order to encourage going to the museum, some museums in Italy offer free entry every first Sunday of each month. The initiative is valid for both locals and tourists and, needless to say, tickets sell out in a matter of minutes, especially for the most celebrated museums. Below is a brief list of the most popular museums to visit in the main Italian cities:

Rome

Milan

Florence

Important to remember…

As tickets sell out very quickly in a matter of minutes, I reinforce: ARRIVE VERY EARLY at the ticket office, because – in this case – it is necessary to pick up the tickets directly there on the day of the visit!

Useful information

To access all the museums that are part of the “domenica al museo” (Sunday at the Museum) project, click here to access the Official Website of the Ministry of Culture, responsible for the idea. Also read: Free Attractions in Italy on the 1st Sunday of every month!

2) Free museum during European Heritage Day

Another (excellent) action promoted by the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities to encourage people to go to the museum to present its cultural heritage and its historical and artistic value. The European Heritage Days are one of the most popular events in Europe. They have been promoted since 1991 by the Council of Europe and the European Commission and encourage visitors to various cultural institutions.

In Italy the project has already become a tradition and is much awaited by many visitors. The official date of the event is – usually – in the second half of September, but specific days are chosen every year and may change from year to year. The initiative lasts a month. To check the dates of the event, you can consult the Official Site here: European Heritage Day.

3) Nights at the Museums in Rome

Also encouraged by public bodies, the Nights at the Museums in Rome project is a success among Italians. Usually in the month of May, museums open their doors at night. There are free tickets, and there are also tickets with reduced prices. To learn more click here on the Official Site: Nights at the Museums in Rome.

The project takes place in several Italian cities, and to find out if there is a museum that adopts the initiative in the city you are visiting, all you need to do is a quick Google search. Remembering that all regions participate in this project.

Golden Tip
In the Vatican, the free museums initiative is valid for the LAST Sunday of each month. Again, I leave the tip: check days and times on the OFFICIAL website of the Vatican Museums by clicking here!
Remember that, by any chance, if the last Sunday of the month coincides with the following dates: Easter, Saint Peter and Paul, Christmas and Santo Stefano, the museum DOES NOT OPEN!

FUN FACT

Do you know the origin of the word MUSEUM?

Here we go: the word Museum has Greek origin and comes from museîon which means “residence of the muses”. The muses were the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Greek goddess guardian of memory. According to Greek mythology, the muses were nymphs who inhabited the woods and who were later elevated to deities, inspiring music and poetry, that is, art.
