Notes: “changing the order of the factors does not change the product!” The list is not ‘from the most beautiful to the least beautiful’, as you will see below!

1) The most beautiful panoramic views of Rome: GIANICOLO HILL (JANICULUM)

Located behind the charming district of Trastevere and thanks to its dominant strategic position, here you have one of the most impressive views in the city! From above, it is not difficult to recognize and locate some of the most beautiful monuments in Rome, such as the dome of San Pietro, the Pantheon , the Vittoriano, and even the Albanian Hills back there!

If you come here around noon, you will be able to watch the famous cannon shot fired every day, at the same time, since 1846. It was a tradition brought by Pope Pius IX (read here how to see the Pope in Rome?) who, to mark the ‘middle of the day’, made a point of making the shot synchronize with all the bells of the Roman churches! If you are there during the sunset, get ready to see a dazzle of nature! Where is it? Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, on the way up to Sant’Onofrio. Also read What to do for the night in Rome?

2) The most beautiful panoramic views of Rome: DOME OF SAINT PETER’S BASILICA

It is IMPOSSIBLE to talk about panoramic views and not to mention the Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica! We know that St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the main attractions of Rome, and, of course, for very justifiable reasons: inside it you will find 11 chapels, 45 altars, several mosaics measuring about 2,000 square meters and, in all their splendor , the famous and beautiful dome, which appears with its impressive 446 meters high. Yes! You can go up and have Rome and the Vatican, romantically, at ‘your feet’! The panoramic view from here introduces you to Piazza San Pietro (St Peter’s Square) and, as you look up, you can see the Spagna and Colonna neighborhoods. Where it is: St. Peter’s Square, Vatican. read our post “What to visit near Rome?

Gold Tip

  • The sooner you go up the dome, the better it is ! For two reasons: because of the heat , if you are traveling during the summer, and because of the line. Early in the day, there are lines, but they are smaller! In addition, get ready: there are 551 steps, but the view from the top makes you forget the sacrifice in a matter of seconds! You can also ‘save’ shoe soles and take ‘half way’ by elevator, so that there are only 320 steps left to the highest point in the entire basilica! If you are going up on foot, you pay 6 euros, if you prefer to use the elevator, 8 euros! Find out here How to buy tickets for the main monuments in Italy?

3) The most beautiful panoramic views of Rome: MONUMENT TO VITTORIO EMANUELE II

Monument that, for a moment, needs no introduction! The monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, inaugurated in 1911, is also known as Monumento Vittoriano or Altare della Patria (“Altar of Homeland”), it is magnificent and immense: it is 135 meters wide by 70 meters high; it features majestic Corinthian columns and infinite staircases, all built in white marble! From here, you have a 360-degree view of the city and, since 2007, there are two panoramic elevators to reach the top. From there, you have a spectacular view from Via del Corso to Piazza Popolo ‘passing’ through the Colosseum. Access to the monument is free; however, to use the elevators, you pay 7 euros. There you can also find the Museo del Risorgimento ( Museum of the Risorgimento ) and admission to this attraction costs 5 euros. Where is it? Piazza Venezia, 00186. Read here in our Special Post “Which are the 10 main tourist monuments in Rome?

4) The most beautiful panoramic views of Rome: PANORAMIC TERRACE OF GIARDINO DEGLI ARANCI (GARDEN OF ORANGES)

Are you romantic? Do you like different and romantic places? Well: write down this next view because it is for you! Go to the terrace of Parque Savello (Savello Park) in Aventino, the Giardino Degli Aranci. With an exuberant nature, which serves as a frame for an incredible view, the Garden is magnanimously beautiful! From there you will have a view of the views of the Gianicolo, the Tiber Island and the Ghetto, which features a beautiful synagogue! Where is it? The entrance is at Piazza S. Pietro d’Illiria, on Via di S. Sabina, Rocca Savella.

5) The most beautiful panoramic views of Rome: PANORAMIC TERRACE THE ZODIAC – MOUNT MARIO

You can only get here by taxi or car, but it is worth spending a few euros more! The terrace of the Zodiac is also known as the ‘valentine’s lane’: self-explanatory, isn’t it ? It is not difficult to attend a wedding proposal here (get the tip!) Due to all the beauty that this place offers us! The terrace, at the top of Mount Mario, is the highest point in Rome (139 meters high) and, for obvious reasons, the view from here is breathtaking! From here, you can see Rome in a magical, almost poetic way, and with all the splendor that the city offers its visitors. It is a truly suggestive place to admire Rome in its entire splendor. From here, you can ‘play’ looking for sights, and you can see the city from its historic center to its splendid castles! Via del Parco Mellini, 88/92.

Shall we talk a little more about Rome?

Rome was founded in the Latium Region , Lazio region, in central Italy. The language was Latin, which spread throughout the world and even gave rise to Portuguese and it was there that one of the most powerful empires in the history of mankind was born, the Roman empire. The history of Rome can be divided into three periods: the Monarchy, which was in force from its foundation until 509 BC; the Republic, when the patricians revolted against the people of the north, the Etruscans, lasted until the year 27 BC, which was when the third period began: the formation of the Roman Empire. Read here in our Special Post “Which are the 10 main tourist monuments in Rome?

The Empire lasted until AD 395, when it was divided into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire, the first with capital in Rome and the second with capital in Constantinople. With so much history, the city’s cultural heritage is still visible today! No wonder, Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world. It is a place that preserves the old and mixes it with the modern and, despite the problems of large urban agglomerations, manages to surprise its tourists for its indisputable beauty, even in the most unusual and least known places.  Also read What to do for the night in Rome?

Curiosity …

Do you know why Rome is called the “Eternal City”? This definition is often attributed, erroneously, to Emperor Hadrian. The credits came to him because of a passage that, according to some people, would be a phrase taken from one of his speeches: “Another Rome will come, and I cannot imagine her face; but I will have helped to form it. Rome will live, Rome will only perish with the last city of men. , HOWEVER… Hadrian NEVER even wrote or uttered those words: the phrase came from a Marguerite Yourcenar novel, Memoria di Adriano, published in the last century.

Then, where did this come from, Ana Patrícia?

Well, the origin of the definition was attributed to a Latin poet who lived between 55 BC and 18-19 BC; His name? Abio Tibullo! He was the creator of the expression that pleased Greeks, ops, Romans: Eternal City! The words appear in his second book, “Elegies”. Here is the famous passage: “Romulo had not yet built the walls of the Eternal City”. Indeed, no one had ever defined Rome so precisely! A definition has never been more adequate to define the greatness of the city. Tokyo and Jerusalem are sometimes also defined as the Eternal City, but we know that the ‘title’ belongs only to Rome!

Hotel I suggest near the Historic Center

If you are passionate about art and would like to stay in the center where you can move around walking, as well as having countless possibilities for places to have lunch / dinner or a snack, I advise you to stay in the historic center. Regions near the  Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forum and the Villa Borghese, Piazza Spagna and Piazza Navona  can be considered as “historic center”. These are the most expensive areas, but you will be close to everything, literally!

If you want to save a great option is the B&B, click on the links below and get to know each one. If you like the suggestion make your reservation and guarantee good prices.

Hotels that I suggest near the San Giovanni Region

For those who want to find cheaper alternatives in quiet areas, but at the same time close to the means of transport to the center, I suggest the region of San Giovanni or Monti (near the metro stations San Giovanni, Castro Pretorio and Circus Massimo) – which it is a more residential neighborhood; therefore, more economical and quiet! And with just 15 minutes by subway you will be in the center too!

Hotel I suggest near Termini Station

For those who prefer to stay in neighborhoods that have good access to the rest of the city and at a better price, then you should choose accommodation in the surroundings of Termini Station (from where a dense network of public means of transport starts, serving both : the local people and tourists).

Hotels that I suggest in Trastevere

For those who prefer to “taste” authentic and characteristic Rome, there is nothing better than booking a hotel in Trastevere (on the outskirts of the city’s historic river), full of typical Roman history and traditions, known for the tortuous streets of  sampietrini  stones and the centers medieval style housing.

The neighborhood is in the historic center and to the right of the Tevere River, in the midst of a spectacular landscape, where each visitor can observe the countless churches and squares (such as Santa Maria in Trastevere). In addition, this neighborhood offers several local restaurants and canteens for those who want to try typical Roman cuisine.
