1) What are the best cafes in Milan? CAFÉ PASCUCCI
A very respected and admired name, when we talk about coffee in Italy, is Café Pascucci. Why is it special? Because they work with special roasting. Over time, the roasting of Monte Cerignone has managed to bring consumers a very special coffee with roasted beans at home. Pascucci’s coffee shop is, without a doubt, one of the best options for those who want good coffee. It is a charming place, elegantly decorated, and presents the customer with perfectly extracted coffee. The baristas are carefully trained, and every detail composes a perfect combination of flavor, aroma, and ambience. The place is also ideal for an impeccable “all’italian” breakfast.

2) What are the best cafes in Milan? TORREFAZIONE ERNANI
We are at the beginning of 1900 (in 1909), and here, between revolutions and great industrial and economic progress, Torrefazione Ernani was born in a roaring way, presenting the city with a true ode to the coffee culture. To this day, this coffee shop presents the intense aroma of coffee with the same passion, dedication, and care that it did at the beginning of the last century. Their coffees are therefore timeless!
The quality is indisputable, and one of the names that most marked the place is the Diamante Azul (“Blue Diamond”) coffee, which helped make this place unique! The coffee presented to customers here is freshly ground and custom-brewed, offering almost a personalized experience. A curiosity: the name Ernani is actually the title of a famous opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most beloved characters by the Milanese, and that’s why the coffee shop has used that name for over a century! Nice tribute, isn’t it?!

We are in one of the most classic, known and beloved places in Milan, the famous Pasticceria Marchesi. The locals blend, in an incredible way, tradition and creativity, typical of Milan. To give you an idea: Pasticceria Marchesi is located in an elegant 18th century building, in the heart of the city, and its decoration is surprising! It all started in 1824, when a Marchesi family opened a small candy store. The indisputable quality of the products caught the public’s attention and it didn’t take long for the place to become a reference in the city. With homemade products, Marchesi offers us a wide range of sweets, cakes, cookies, and beverages. It is still a family business, and the place offers us, besides everything, a splendid service!

4) What are the best cafes in Milan? CAFEZAL
Cafezal: Brazil meets Italy in Milan! Yes! So we can define this amazing place! The name of the place, which in English means “coffee plantation,” is one of the newest coffee shops in Milan, but it has already conquered its place in the heart of the Milanese. Inaugurated in 2018 by the hands of Carlos Bitencourt, an Italian-Brazilian engineer in love with coffee, he was inspired by London coffee shops to make his dream come true. One of the highlights of the local coffee is its roasting, after the bar, which is where the magic happens with the union of Italian and Brazilian traditions, offering an impeccable coffee that easily pleases even the most demanding palates.

Do you know the history of coffee?
Well, in short, coffee was ‘the wine of Arabia’, it was once considered the devil’s drink, and today we find it even in the ‘gourmet’ version. One of the main centers of coffee diffusion, back in the 16th century, was Cairo, Egypt, from where many traders and pilgrims exported coffee to almost all parts of the world. Coffee served as a beverage option, as wine was prohibited for consumption because of the Islamic religion. However, we must mention that its spread was also due to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, which supplied coffee in enormous quantities to Vienna. Discover our Food and Wine section.
The Wine of Arabia
We move on to the 17th century, where “the wine of”Arabia”—coffee—finally arrived in Europe to stay! A curious fact: a century earlier, in Venice, there were reports that Coffea arabica seeds could be found in various apothecaries. They say it cost a small fortune, and the seeds were used as a remedy for many different problems. History and more history, the fact is that, at the end of the 17th century, coffee shops emerged in full force throughout Europe. In Italy, the first coffee shop was opened by the Venetian Pietro Della Valle, who, in 1615, opened the first coffee shop in Italy. A century later, in 1720, the famous Caffè Florian was inaugurated in Venice, in Piazza San Marco, which is, until today, a reference when we talk about ancestry and titles such as the “oldest cafe in the world.”.
