Impossible not to open our list with such an iconic coffee shop! Founded in 1720, as mentioned above, it was initially inaugurated under the name “Alla Venezia Trionfante”. The building where it is located is of impressive elegance and the coffee shop features, in addition to their famous (and delicious) coffee, exclusive and delicious products, all made by them. The Florian was a meeting point for several iconic figures from Italy such as Carlo Goldoni, Giacomo Casanova and Gabriele d’Annunzio.

They say that he frequented the place, as that was the only coffee shop that accepted women as frequenters and, there, he flattered the ladies trying to find his love. Currently, Caffé Florian preserves its charm from past times in a unique way. Its architecture is impressive, the service, the details: everything here is very poetic, historic and incredible! The place presents itself with a few rooms and all of them are brilliantly decorated. You can enjoy your coffee in the Senate Room, Chinese Room, Oriental Room, or in the Illustrious Room. 2) What are the best coffee shops in Venice? Gran Caffè Quadri

Another famous historical place with an impressive view, also at Saint Mark’s Square. Its inauguration was, in fact, as a restaurant, in 1638, and was called “Il Rimedio”, because, there, Malvasia wine was sold, which was reputed to invigorate and awaken the spirit. In 1775, Giorgio Quadri invested the family’s assets in the place and thus began the story of the Gran Caffè Quadri. In 2011, the place was renovated and returned to its original appearance; the place seems to transport us back in time, to the time between the Republic of the Serenissima and the birth of the modern era.

The coffee shop has always been frequented by big names such as Stendhal, Lord Byron, Alexandre Dumas, Wagner, Marcel Proust, and, to this day, it is a reference for famous and renowned artists from around the world! 3) What are the best coffee shops in Venice? Harry’s Bar

Talking about Venetian coffee shops and leaving Harry’s Bar out can be considered a crime! The place was named by its owner, Giuseppe Cipriani, to honor student Harry Pickering who moved to Venice in the 1920s to try to end his alcohol addiction. With no money to take care of himself, Harry met Giuseppe, who at the time was a bartender at the Europa & Britannia hotel, where the American lived. Touched by the boy’s story, he lent his new friend 10,000 lire, which was a very high amount for the time. After two years, Harry was cured and returned to Venice. Harry located Giuseppe and, to thank him, gave him 30,000 lire! So Cipriani opened his own business and named it after his dear friend! He opened the site in 1931 and, to this day, the site thrives amazingly!

Coffe’s History

When we talk about coffee, it’s impossible not to think about Venice. The city has had a very close relationship with coffee for centuries due to its excellent geographic position, which greatly facilitated its trade relations with the Arabs, who spread the coffee tradition throughout Italy. One of the main centers of coffee propagation in the 16th century was Cairo, Egypt, from where many merchants and pilgrims exported coffee almost everywhere in the world. However, its real expansion took place through the Ottoman Empire, which supplied coffee in immense quantities, including Italy.

Let’s go to the 17th century, where “the wine of Arabia” – coffee – finally arrived in Europe to stay. There is a story, which has never been confirmed or denied, that a century before coffee became a success, it was possible to find, in Venice, Coffea arabica seeds in various apothecaries. The grain cost a small fortune and the seeds were used as a remedy for many problems. Stories aside, the fact is that, at the end of the 17th century, coffee shops emerged in full force throughout Europe.

The Wine of Arabia

In the past, coffee was called ‘the wine of Arabia’, as explained above, and was also considered the ‘devil’s drink’, because many did not understand how a dark and bitter drink had the ability to energize and revitalize people – Of course, there were no studies on the benefits of coffee at that time, so ignore it!

The first Italian coffee shop

The first Italian coffee shop, by the way, was born in Venice and was named ‘a bottega do caffè’; it was located at Saint Mark’s Square and was opened at the end of the 17th century. The place was so important to the city, even at that time, that it even ‘received’ a work – homonymous – by Carlo Goldoni.
