We started from Greve in Chianti, this place is the heart of the Chianti Classic production area and is worth a visit. This lively city is famous for its peculiar square, which was the market town from medieval villages, castles and farms to the surrounding hills. Greve in Chianti is home to many interesting churches and parishes, in addition, the city is full of castles and medieval villages that served as noble residences. Greve offers the opportunity to taste and savour many typical Chianti products. Under the arcades of the square, in fact, there are many artisan shops, bars and restaurants. These include the old Falorni Butcher which only offers traditional Chianti products.

How to get to Chianti?

Chianti is one of the most beautiful and well-known areas in Tuscany. Perched hills and villages characterize this territory that stretches between Florence and Siena, there are many places to visit and many kilometers to travel if you want to enjoy the taste of this region. Moving in such a vast area, although withdrawn, can be tricky if you decide to use public transport. On the other hand, traveling by car can be very pleasant and become an integral part of the trip (always with a very detailed map in hand).

1) How to get to Chianti? BY TRAIN

Although the rail network is well developed in Tuscany, it does not reach the main cities in Chianti. The railway stations in Chianti are actually just two, Poggibonsi and Castellina in Chianti departing and / or arriving to / from Florence or Siena. The choice between the two, of course, depends on your itinerary.

Poggibonsi can be your starting point if you decide to visit San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and other locations on the border, before moving on to the Chianti DOC or Siena. Castellina in Chianti, on the other hand, is located in the heart of Chianti and is the ideal place to start your trip.

2) How to get to Chianti? BY CAR

The car is definitely the best way to visit Chianti, because you can be free to choose where and when to make your trip, but also to be able to enjoy the best of nature and shows in this area. Florence-Siena, the road that runs along the border between Chianti and Val d’Elsa, is the fastest connection, being a high-speed road, but be sure to savor the beauty of the landscape. The best way to get to the heart of Chianti quickly is Poggibonsi Norte.


State road 222, called Chiantigiana, which goes up and down hills, runs through all major cities in Chianti. It is certainly spectacular and very beautiful to travel, even for a few kilometers. The panorama along this road can often leave you breathless. You should be careful to go around at night or keep your speed down to avoid running over wild boar, pigs and deer. Highway 2 Cassia runs almost parallel to the highway. As it passes along the border with Chianti, it is advisable to go to Greve and then take the Chiantigiana road.
