Emilia Romagna offers visitors wonderful landscapes, delights for the eyes and for the spirit, in a mixture of colors and scents of the land, joy, music, cinema and art. Located between the course of the Po River, in the north, and the Apennine reliefs, in the south, this region is considered to be among the most fertile and productive in Italy, thanks, also, to the influence of the Adriatic Sea, which softens the climate in the coastal area. Our Introduction

Emilia Romagna is among the regions with the greatest tourist flow, both nationally and internationally. This is thanks to the numerous historic villages, the splendid city of art and the Romagna coast, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, especially during summer. Remarkable is the quality and quantity of tourist services and receptive structures along the coast that allow to meet the demands of each tourist , from the youth group to families with children. The cities of art are magnificent, with a huge artistic and architectural heritage such as Bologna, Ravenna and Ferrar a in the first place, but without forgetting other important cities in the province such as Parma, Modena and Piacenza.

Our itinerary

After the plane lands, we will rent a car in Bologna and start our journey towards the Romagna hills, staying in resorts around the Bologna area, until we reach Rimini. It will be a week dedicated to Romagna, enjoying the greenery and hilly area of this region, as well as its coast. With the rented car we start our tour of Emilia Romagna now! Our itinerary leaves for the splendid city of Bologna.

1) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? VISIT BOLOGNA

First day, Bologna. We arrive at Bologna airport, rent a car and go to Bologna la Dotta. Then we continue to Dozza and Castel San Pietro Terme. The tour of the Emilia-Romagnan city begins at Maggiore Square, a meeting point for the city and civil, religious and recreational events. Next to it, we can admire the imposing Basilica of St Petronius; nearby, there is the Duomo of Bologna, which is the Cathedral of St Peter. Around the Basilica of St Petronius there are beautiful historic buildings such as Podestà Palace, Notai Palace and Banchi Palace. We continue the tour in the center of Bologna, looking for typical gastronomic aspects.

Local Products

We stop near one of the oldest shops with excellent Bolognese cuisine to try some of the local products that made the history of Bologna, where we will taste EGP mortadella, pork rinds and sausages. We have lunch in a typical tavern downtown. Learn everything about Bologna here!

Medieval Villages

In the afternoon, we go to Dozza, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, where after a pleasant walk through its streets, we will enter Rocca Sforzesca; the underground of this building houses the Emilia-Romagna Regional Wine Bar, with 800 labels and typical regional products. We’ll continue to Castel San Pietro Terme, where we’ll get ready for dinner and reservations at one of the ranch hotels in the area.

2) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? VISIT FERRARA

Second day, Ferrara. After breakfast, we will depart for a tour of the cultured city of Ferrara. We stop in Minerbio, to visit Rocca Isolani, and in the town of Soverzano, to visit the splendid Castle of San Martino or Manzoli Castle. Arriving in Ferrara, we will use another means of transport, the bicycle, which is great in this wonderful city. Learn everything about Ferrara here!

About Ferrara

There are so many cycle paths, some of which have a tourist itinerary, either in the city center or around us. Don’t miss the Estense Castle, whose interior can be visited , as well as the towers and underground prisons. Of noteworthy interest is the Cathedral of St George, begun in the Romanesque style that still prevails today on the front façade. Then, we head towards the plain of Ferrara, with a stop at Quartesana, at a farm, to taste salami and cold cuts of our own production, including the typical Salama da Sugo from Ferrara. The day will end in Ostellato, where we will be able to taste the typical products of the area accompanied by a good wine, and of course, spend the night here.

3) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? VISIT THE COMACCHIO VALLEYS

Third day, Comacchio Valleys . After a good breakfast at the hotel farm, we’ll leave for Pomposa, where we’ll make a stop to visit its Abbey. We then continue to the Comacchio valleys to dedicate the day to visits with excursions to the Dolta Del Po Regional Park, considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In particular, we will focus on the Comacchio Valleys, one of the most important lake complexes present in Italy and Europe.

About Comacchio

Comacchio is an Italian city in the province of Ferrara. Its beaches are defined as seven stars that shine on the Adriatic coast, seven luminous centers for beach, sport and natural tourism. There is no shortage of cultural moments with the picturesque historic center and museums. In addition to visiting the historic center, it is also possible to take boat trips into the valleys, where we can see the Casoni, typical constructions for the fishing teams that lived there during the fishing seasons.

Those who visit Comacchio cannot miss the typical local products, so that their taste buds can taste good fish; the first among all is the eel, the queen of the valleys. Another must-see classic in Comacchio’s enogastronomy is Vino delle Sabbie (Wine of the Sands). For lunch, there are many possibilities, thanks to the various restaurants where one can taste fish-based dishes, prepared according to the tradition of Comacchio. Fourth day, Ravenna. After a good breakfast, we head to the city of Ravenna. Ravenna is known as the city of Byzantine mosaics, present in the Church of Sant’Eufemia and Theodoric Palace. Christian monuments have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn all about Ravenna here!

A culturally rich and fascinating city, Ravenna’s notoriety is often overshadowed by the resonance of other renowned Italian art cities. Few, in fact, know that here is where Dante’s remains are, just as few know that Ravenna holds eight monuments that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ravenna has a glorious past. It was the capital of three different empires three times (of the Western Roman Empire, then Theodoric, the Great, finally, of the Byzantine Empire in Europe); as witnesses, we have the fascinating basilicas and baptisteries of the city, where the richest mosaic patrimony of the 5th and 6th centuries is preserved. The city’s masterpieces are an example of the magnificence acquired during its long history. 5) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? VISIT MARANELLO AND MODENA

Fifth day, Maranello and Modena. After breakfast, we leave Ravenna to reach Maranello and then Modena. One of the stops I recommend for those who love flavors, Italian beauties and cars is the Maranello area, then we’ll head to Modena. Also read about the Motorcycle and Car Museums in Italy!

Ferrari Museum (Maranello)

In the Maranello area, car lovers can visit the Ferrari Museum , presented a few years ago, and fully experience the history of this land and its family. Maranello is the home of engines and that is why it is also called Motor Valley. A visit to the Ferrari house is unmissable. After leaving Maranello, we reach Modena, a city with an important past, along the historic Via Emilia; firstly, an Etruscan settlement, then a Gallic settlement, then in 183 BC, a Roman colony. Romanesque Cathedral (Modena)

The city, which was capital of the duchy for a long period, built small art treasures, such as the Romanesque Cathedral , in the heart of Modena, in Piazza Grande, and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the same square and the Ghirlandina. Modena is considered the city of taste and the homeland of tortellini; impossible to stop enjoying this typical food. After enjoying these delights, we deserve a good night’s sleep.

6) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? VISIT PARMA AND PIACENZA

Sixth day, Parma and Piacenza. After breakfast, we leave the city of Modena to reach Parma and Piacenza. A must-see for tourists is Parma, in particular the Regio Theater, which has nothing to envy on the most famous Scala di Milano. In October, the Verdi Festival takes place with concerts throughout the month.

About Parma and Piacenza

In Parma, it will be possible to discover the different tones that history, art, culture and tradition left in this city, starting with the medieval period, the rich heritage of Renaissance art, the splendors of the Farnese era, the Bourbon reconstruction of the state, the happy period of government of the Duchess Maria Luigia of Austria. The itinerary is all in the heart of the city and allows a walk through the streets of the historic center between its squares and the facades of other monuments such as the Regio Theater, the City Hall and the Governor’s Palace, in Piazza Garibaldi, the Cathedral and the Baptistery. Between Parma and Piacenza, there are more than twenty-two castles and fortresses that formed a Duchy and that are still open to visit today.Learn everything about Parma here!

Rivalta Castle

They are all very beautiful, but if you really have to choose, then our favorite is Rivalta Castle, which is located inside a small village, right in the heart of Piacenza. Rivalta Castle is a stop desired by distinguished characters to spend their holidays in complete relaxation, surrounded by history and beauty. After making a short stop to see the castle, we continue to visit the town of Piacenza, where we will sleep. Symbols of the splendor of the former Duchy of Parma and Piacenza are the majestic Communal or Gothic Palace (13th century) and Duomo Square, dominated by the Cathedral in the Romanesque style. Among the numerous and prestigious monuments, the Church of St Sixtus, the Church of St Anthony and the neoclassical theater stand out.After driving around the city, we stop for dinner at a local tavern and right after that, bed. 7) What to do in Emilia Romagna in one week? RIMINI

Seventh and last day, Rimini. After having a great breakfast, we leave Piacenza and head to the coast, more precisely to Rimini; with this city, we finish our itinerary.

Historic center

Rimini and the Romagna coastline offer much, much more, but fun and piadina (a typical bread) are two things that are often remembered and mentioned. Of course, we cannot forget the beautiful Historic Center of the city of Rimini, where cultural activities are organized throughout the year. You cannot miss the Malatestian Temple. Initially, it was a Franciscan convent, later transformed into the personal mausoleum of Sigismondo Malatesta. Never has a land been as attentive to tourism as the province of Rimini; hospitality around here is a pride that should be exported around the world. Tradition, culture, parties and shows are integral parts of Rimini, with a calendar that spans the entire year.Despite being essentially a resort, you will not get bored at any time of year.
