A little about Anghiari, in Tuscany!

Our Introduction

Anghiari is a small town located in Tuscany. With its nearly 5,500 inhabitants, Anghiari is famous for having been portrayed by Leonardo Da Vinci, in one of the most famous frescoes in the world: the battle between Florence and Milan, which took place in the city. The remains of the work, having been restored and passed on by the hands of several artists, are located in the Salone dei Cinquecento, in the Vecchio Palace, in Florence, and its beauty impresses even the most demanding eyes.

A little about Anghiari history

Anghiari is not a big city and you can see the best of it in just one day. The village was founded as a castle, in the Lombard period, although there is information, in its first documentation found, that there were people there since 1048. In the 11th century, Anghiari came to be dominated by the Camaldolese, who built the Abbey of St Bartholomew there. Later, the village was conquered by the Florentines, in 1440, right after the famous Battle of Anghiari.

The name Anghiari still divides opinions

Some say that the name derives from the Roman “castrum angulare”, and refers to the angular shape of its castle, while others argue that the word comes from “gravel”, a material often found there. In any case, Anghiari is splendid and wins over our hearts with the details that we will get to know now!

1) What to do in one day in Anghiari, Tuscany? VISIT THE CLOCK TOWER

In the historic center, definitely, we need to take time to see the Clock Tower that dominates the village. This beautiful tower is also known as Campano and is a 14th century building; it was destroyed in the 16th century, but rebuilt in every detail as the first Tower erected there. During the 17th century, a second clock was placed there – which is the oldest in Italy: it sits on top of the Tower and is beautiful.

2) What to do in one day in Anghiari, Tuscany? VISIT THE BATTAGLIA PALACE

Another must-see in Anghiari, of course, is Battaglia Palace. The Battle of Anghiari, as we have already mentioned, was a landmark in the city’s history and, of course, made it famous. The Battaglia Palace houses the fantastic Battle Museum, which is a very educational museum and tells us, in detail, everything about the famous battle between Florence and Milan, as well as telling us in a delicious way the entire history of the city. The museum offers very interesting services, ranging from prehistory to the 18th century; there we can observe various prehistoric tools and ancient angular firearms.

The museum has 3 floors, and is located in the former Marzocco Palace.

Of course, the main attraction of the museum is the part that tells the story of the notorious battle; there are some videos and one of them tells us all about Da Vinci’s ‘lost painting’. You can also see a model that reproduces the battle and is something fascinating, done with impressive details. The museum is very interactive and multimedia, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. From the third floor, the view from the window is magnificent! Remember to have a quick peek! 3) What to do in one day in Anghiari, Tuscany? VISIT THE CHURCH OF ST MARY OF GRACES

From there, we can head to the Church of St Mary of Graces. This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful churches in the city. The structure dates back to the 18th century and houses several works of great artistic value. Here you can admire two beautiful panels painted by Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, and a piece made in polychrome glass terracotta by artist Andrea Della Robbia.

4) What to do in one day in Anghiari, Tuscany? VISIT TAGLIESCHI PALACE

Another very interesting place, especially for art lovers, is Taglieschi Palace, which is one of the most important in the village. The building is close to Mameli Square and houses the State Museum. There you can admire splendid paintings from the 16th century; the place is perfect for those who want to know a little better the works of Florentine artists, such as Della Robbia, for example.

5) What to do in one day in Anghiari, Tuscany? VISIT THE CASTLE OF SORCI

For castle lovers, Anghiari presents us with a great option: the Castle of Sorci. And, legend has it, the castle is haunted! The Castle, which is located a few kilometers from the historic center and was the home of Baldaccio Bruni, a brave captain of Ventura, was also used as a summer residence for the Tarlati di Pietramala family (1234-1388) and the Pichi di Sansepolcro family ( 1443-1650). Today, there is a hotel there.

Let’s get to the legend!

Baldaccio Bruni, the first owner, was killed in the castle in 1441 by his own allies who later left him in the public square where he was beheaded. It is said that, even today, in the dead of night, it is possible to hear their cries for mercy through the castle’s corridors and in some rooms. Many swear, on their honor, that they have seen the ghost of the captain walking headless across the estate. Do you dare to sleep there? The truth is: the place is beautiful! It’s really worth getting to know!

For nature lovers, I suggest a visit to Anghiari Park: the Nature Factory. Fabbrica della Natura is a very well structured park and is located in the Monti Rognosi Nature Reserve. How to get to Anghiari?

Anghiari is in the province of Arezzo, in the Tuscan Valley of the Tiber. For those with a car, there are great options: for those coming from the North, you can take the A14 highway towards Cesena and then the E45 towards Orte-Roma; take the Sansepolcro Sud exit, then take the SS73 towards Arezzo – following signs.

From Arezzo you can reach Anghiari via the panoramic Libbia SP 43 Provincial Road and, if you want to pass through the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, on a dreamy path that will offer you a wonderful view, use the SS258 (Marecchiese) and, when you reach Sansepolcro, follow signs for Arezzo.
