Introduction
The beautiful city of Lucca is one of the main art cities in Italy. It is also famous for its intact walls, which date back to the 15th-17th century. Its perimeter is about 4,223 m around the historic city center and is one of the 4 provincial capitals of the Italian province that has an intact Renaissance wall, along with Ferrara, Grosseto and Bergamo. Lucca is a well-organized and easy-to-walk city. All its corners hide some historic building, some different place that attracts attention and makes us fall in love with this place that seems to be magical! Curiosity
Because of its immense historical-monumental wealth, the proposal to include the Walls of Lucca on the UNESCO World Heritage List has been presented and accepted! In other words: Lucca is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list! It is indeed a fantastic city!
1) Where to sleep in Lucca? IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER
The historic center of the city has remained almost untouched, presenting, until today, several original elements. Lucca is also famous for its churches, no wonder it is known as the City of 100 churches! TIP: don’t underestimate any of them, take a peek at each one you can, they are beautiful.
Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (“Amphitheater Square”)
One of the most fantastic places in the city is, without a doubt, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Born from the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater, it is unique in its architectural genre. It offers excellent accommodation options and is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants, as well as, of course, churches! The main street nearby is the narrow and medieval Via Fillungo, which brings together the main commercial establishments in the city as mentioned above: shops, bars, restaurants, hotels … It is an EXCELLENT option to be considered when choosing a hotel in the city.
Piazza San Michele (“Saint Michael Square”)
Another suggestive square is Piazza San Michele, the historic center of the city, the historic center of the city itself. It is six minutes from Piazza do Anfiteatro and is also full of life. The options in the center, of course, are a little more expensive, but the ease of travel, in addition to being close to the main points of the city, it is worth all the investment!
Piazza San Martino and Piazza Napoleone (“Saint Martin Square” and “Napoleon Square”)
Piazza San Martino is a religious center where the famous Duomo di San Martino (Cathedral of Saint Martin) is located. It is another area close to everything and valid for a stay of two or three days! In Piazza Napoleone, or, as it is also called, Piazza Grande (“Great Square”), was commissioned by Elisa Baciocchi during her principality. She ordered that the medieval buildings be demolished and placed a church there.
Piazza del Giglio (“Lily’s Square”)
People, being a walled city, there are not so many options outside the walls, but any region chosen to stay inside the walls, will offer you a fantastic experience! Piazza del Giglio, where you can see the namesake theater, can also be considered!
The accommodation options that I advise with great value for money are:
- Bed and Breakfast (B&B) Chill in Tuscany
- Bed and Breakfast (B&B) Chalet Lucca
- Hotel Palazzo Alexander
- Hotel La Luna
2) Where to sleep in Lucca? NEAR THE TRAIN STATION
The Lucca train station area also offers good and pleasant surprises! One of the advantages of staying there is, without a doubt, the ease of “detachment”! Being able to choose Lucca as the base city, from the station it is possible to go by train to several cities! And the best part: this region is just 15 minutes walking from the center and its main points of interest.
The accommodation options that I advise with great value for money are:
- Pousada Liberi Mercanti
- Bed and Breakfast (B&B) B&B Cento Passi Dalle Mura
- Hintown Via Della Rosa Apartment
3) Where to sleep in Lucca? IN MARIA DI LUCCA
A region a little further away, but not far, is the Maria di Lucca area. There are great accommodation options there, and some are more affordable than those in the center. Even so it is easy to get to and from the center.
Good to know
- Another HUGE advantage: Lucca, by train, is close to several important cities! In a short time, for example, you can reach Florence. It is VERY worthwhile to stay in Lucca, although it does not have as many options as the other cities nearby, but for those who do not like the “mess” of tourists, it is ideal for strolling with calm and tranquility.
- A must see in the city, in addition to the churches and their historic buildings, it is undoubtedly a visit to the Mansi Palace. The Palace is a 17th century building and houses the entire collection of the National Gallery. Prestigious Italian and foreign works are housed there, many of them very rare, made between the Renaissance and the 18th century. This is also where the Medici family portraits, some paintings, statues and other relics and priceless pieces for humanity are located.
