Where to stay in Palermo?

Well, first of all it is good to say: Palermo, being a big city, is not one of the safest cities in the world, so always be aware. This does not mean that it is extremely dangerous, but people with bad intentions exist everywhere, so it is good to pay attention, O.K.?! Especially at night and in more distant places. 1) Where to stay in Palermo? HISTORIC CENTER

Palermo is the capital of Sicily and has almost 674.000 inhabitants. It was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians and its Cathedral, built in the 4th century AD, is located in one of the most beautiful places in the city that is, without a doubt, its Historic Center. It is one of the busiest regions and offers a wide range of excellent hotels. As in most cities, prices here are a little higher, but consider that you are close to everything and you will not need to use public transport to visit the main points of the city.

Palermo Cathedral

Let’s start with the Cathedral of Palermo. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it is the main place of Catholic worship in the city and is the episcopal seat of the homonymous metropolitan archdiocese.

Massimo Theater

Another must-see is the Massimo Theater. The theater opened on May 16, 1897, with Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi. The show had never been performed in Palermo. The Massimo Theater covers an area of more than 7,730 square meters and is the third largest theater in Europe, second only to the operas of Paris and Vienna.

Via Maqueta and I Quattro Canti (The Four Corners)

Be sure to stroll along the historic Via Maqueta. Strolling there it is possible to reach the so-called I Quattro Canti. In English, ‘the four corners’, which is an intersection where there are four sources, one in each ‘corner’. One of the fountains represents the rivers of the city, another represents the four seasons of the year, another represents a former monarch and, finally, another fountain represents a patron saint of Palermo.

Fontana Della Vergogna (Vergogna Fountain)

Be sure to see another beautiful fountain in the city, Fontana Della Vergogna. Its official name is Fontana Pretoria, but due to the huge number of statues of the naked gods, the inhabitants of Palermo call it the “Shame Fountain”. The original work, before being installed, had 48 statues. Thus, some adaptation interventions were necessary in the recomposition of the many pieces that were broken during the transport of the statues.

The work revolves around a central basin surrounded by four bridges and a balustrade fence. It is formed by three concentric tanks, from which begins the water game that starts from the top, where the god Bacchus is, while all around there are statues representing other gods such as Venus, Adonis, Hercules, Apollo and Diana. It is a beauty without equal! If we were to talk about all the interesting points, the text would have more than ten pages, because Palermo is, really, FULL of incredible sights! 2) Where to stay in Palermo? PALERMO CENTRAL STATION

Another excellent area to stay is close to Palermo’s central station. It is a 15 minute walk from the center (considering ‘i quattro canti’) and it is a very good area to stay, especially if you want to use the train frequently to get out of the city.

3) Where to stay in Palermo? NOTARBARTOLO STATION

A lodging option in a more remote location is near the Notarbartolo station. It is not one of the most beautiful places in the city, but being close to the station, it makes getting around easier. It is half an hour from the center, both on foot and by train, and is an option for those who want to save more; remember that the savings with the hotel can often cost more when it comes to transportation, so get organized.

4) Where to stay in Palermo? AL MARE CASTLE

The Al Mare Castle area and its surroundings can also be a good idea, especially if you want something closer to the beach and with easy access to boats that take you to other locations via the sea. It is not a very cheap area, but the ease of moving around the city is attractive! You are 10 minutes from the Ferry’s departure ports and 15 minutes from the center. So it is to think before closing the hosting!

5) Where to stay in Palermo? GUADAGNA AREA

Another area further away, but which can be great for those who will be using the train more is the Guadagna area. It is a very quiet neighborhood and is half an hour from the center (walking). If you prefer, you can take the train and get off at Central station; the trip takes 15 minutes.

All areas of Palermo, in general, have good tourist infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. Transport is also very efficient, but, being a practically flat city, walking is a great option. Walk slowly, discover the details of this incredible city that is Palermo. A walk by the sea, a stop for a coffee watching the movement of the boats, near the marina, is priceless!
