The attractions in Treviso are not to be missed…

Treviso, Veneto, presents itself to its visitors in an extremely elegant manner. Full of charm, history and culture, Treviso stretches along the walls that surround the entire historic center. It is there that you will find the beautiful Porta San Tomaso, designed by Guglielmo D’Alzano, and was built by Mayor Paolo Nani in the early 1500s. The statue of St. Paul, at the top of the door, presents us with the Lion of St. Mark, and, next to it, the Botteniga River frames the bridge and the impeccable architecture that we can see there.

Church of San Francesco

Right at the entrance to the city we can observe incredible attractions, such as the historic Church of San Francesco, 5 minutes from Porta San Tomaso. This church was erected in 1200, closed during the Napoleonic period and reopened only in 1928, completely restored. Inside it, the huge fresco of St. Christopher deserves to be highlighted, as well as other precious works located in the chancel.

St. Francisco Bridge and Canale del Buranelli

Leaving the Church, follow Via Campana, which is an area entirely dedicated to pedestrians. There you will find the Ponte di San Francesco (St. Francisco Bridge), with its beautiful stream, the Cagnan Grande. From here you can also reach the Canale del Buranelli, very famous for being the old place where washerwomen washed their clothes.

Isola (Island) della Pescheria and Church of San Leonardo

Be sure to also visit the beautiful Isola della Pescheria. Just cross Piazza San Leonardo, and there you can admire an incredible fountain with three basins of Valdagno marble. The fountain was built in 1929 and, in the same square, you will find the historic Church of San Leonardo, which stands imposing with its precious façade.

The Isola della Pescheria is home to the city’s famous fish market, which has been operating for 158 years. It is, in fact, a small island in the Cagnan Grande and was originally part of three other natural islands, however, to house the market, in 1850 it was ‘unified’ and turned into a single island.

St. Caterina Complex

As you leave the island, head to the emblematic St. Caterina complex, which is the center of Treviso’s Civic Museums, including the church and convent. We are talking about the church of Santa Caterina, which is made entirely in Gothic style and houses frescoes from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Civic Museums, on the other hand, include two areas: the Luigi Bailo Museum and the Ca’ Da Noal – Casa Robegan – Casa Karwath complex.

Dante Bridge

Also not to be missed is the Dante Bridge. Flowing into the Sile, it is located in the Cagnan Grande and is a charm in itself! The name of this bridge was given in 1865, on the sixth centenary of the birth of Dante Alighieri, and was a tribute to the master. On the opposite side of the bridge, be sure to see the Bastione San Paolo, which is one of the defensive elements that make up the walls of Treviso.

Cathedral of St. Peter

It’s impossible to talk about Treviso without mentioning the Cathedral of St. Pietro, the famous Duomo. The Cathedral is in neoclassical style, and its façade draws our attention: it is wonderful! It features a beautiful staircase and six Ionic columns. Inside the church we can see three naves, chapels, three final apses and several works of art.

In the Mal Ink Chapel, which is next to the Sacristy, you can see the frescoes on the walls in a clear and detailed way. There is also a fresco in the dome of Pordenone and, I cannot fail to mention, the precious Altarpiece of the Annunciation by Titian: unbelievable!

Parish of St. Nicolò

Another church worth a visit is the Parish of St. Nicolò. Contrary to what many people think, the city’s Duomo is not the largest church in Treviso, the largest of them, is that of San Nicolò. This church was built in the twelfth century, has a beautiful Gothic style, and impresses with its size. Inside you will find several frescoes made by the hands of Tommaso and his students. It is truly a very special church.

St. Vito Square and Fountain of the Breasts

Of course, Treviso also has its canals, and most of them are surrounded by houses with paintings that catch our attention. One of the most beautiful places in the city is Piazza San Vito (St. Vito Square), surrounded by houses. Nearby you will find the famous Fountain of the Mamas, which is an ancient fountain that once spouted white and red wine during the domination of the Republic of Venice. Today that fountain is the city’s postcard.

Lords’ Square

We head to Piazza dei Signori (Lords’ Square) which is, without a doubt, a must-see! The square is surrounded by several historic palaces and, among the most beautiful, are: Palazzo del Podestà, which can be easily identified because of its beautiful Civic Tower; the Palazzo del Trecento, on the east side, which was bombed in 44, underwent several damages, but was completely restored, being – today – the seat of the municipal council; the Palazzo Pretorio and its beautiful façade from the seventeenth century, and the Municipal Art Gallery and Library, which also stands out for its splendid architecture.

In this same square you will also find the Loggia dei Cavalieri, one of the most important monuments in Treviso. It was erected in the second part of the 1200s, and it is a brick building with arches on three of sides and is famous as it was where nobles used to gather to participate in board games.

2) How to get to Treviso? DRIVING

You can use the A4 – Turin – Milan-Venice – Trieste. Take the exit for Cessalto, which leads to Treviso; you can also use the A13 – Bologna-Padua; the A27 Venice-Belluno with the following exits: Vittorio Veneto, Conegliano, Treviso North and South, Mogliano Veneto. It is well signposted and you will have no major problems getting to the city.
