Furore is a small village in the province of Salerno and lies in the heart of the Amalfi Coast. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and is part of the Club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Many call it ‘the village that doesn’t exist’, as it is literally located on the side of a mountain and is a fjord. And now come on, let’s see the options to get to Furore, on the Amalfi Coast. 1) How to get to Furore, on the Amalfi Coast? BY CAR

By car, take the Napoli-Salerno highway and then the Castellammare di Stabia exit and take the SS towards Pimonte-Agerola. Arriving in Agerola, just follow the signs for Furore. If you prefer, you can use the Positano-Amalfi state highway, but the route is more difficult. In fact, on this route, when you reach the Fjord you will have the feeling that the city “does not exist”. The ‘trick’ here, to get to Furore, is as follows: at the Pogerola crossing, go up, leave the area from Amalfi, cross Vettica, Conca dei Marini and continue for about 8 kilometers; from there, you can already see the first houses in the city.

Note:

  • On the state highway it is possible to park only with motor-bicycles; cars, no way!

Suggestion? Go by public transport! You can go with the local buses operated by the SITA company, which stop right at the bridge, very close to the Fjord. From Salerno or Naples, you must take the line that goes to Amalfi and as soon as you arrive at Amalfi, change buses at the terminal, using the line to Positano / Sorrento; the Furore stop is near the bridge over the fjord. In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the sight you want to visit. Curiosities about Furore

Where does the name Furore come from? There is a local legend that says that Devil, in person, went to Furore and the inhabitants of the small village, disliking his presence there, were very upset with him. Disgusted, the Devil then left and decided to leave a ‘remembrance’ to the population, close to Agerola; however, by mistake he used the most aggressive nettles to clean himself and ran away screaming and cursing due to the inconvenience, stamping his feet furious on the ground, thus, marking that stretch of road.

Of course, historians, however, argue that the city was formerly called ‘Terra Furoris’, named after the sound of the sea on the rocks of the small fjord. The natural port, nowadays, presents itself as an open air museum. In the village, which is at the top of the hill, the few inhabitants were dedicated to sheep raising and handicrafts. The streets of Furore bear the names of the most important families in the city such as ‘Li Summonti’, ‘Le Porpore’, ‘Li Cuomi’ and ‘Li Candidi.

The oldest family there is the Summonti, who arrived in Furore around 1400 and are known as honest men. Because of its geographical location, the fjord was a very active port and works for trade; with his natural defense, he was able to protect himself from attacks and invasions, including the Saracens.

The Drying Room and the Calcara

Inside the Furore fjord, we can still see two old buildings from the old manufacturing industries: the Drying Room and the Calcara. The Drying Room, called Stenditoio, was the place used for the sheets of paper produced there to be dried naturally and, legend has it, that Furore also made Amalfi famous, since Amalfi was also a major paper producer. Calcara, on the other hand, was used to work stones, which they used for local construction.

Background for movies

The cliff of the fjord served several times as a background for films, beginning to gain attention at the hands of the Italian directors Fellini and Rossellini. Speaking of Rossellini, Furore was the setting for one of the most beautiful love stories of its director with the splendid Anna Magnani, to whom the permanent museum located in Villa della Storta was dedicated.

The Furore fjord

The main attraction of this small town in the Campania region is, without a doubt, its beautiful fjord. The Furore fjord is a small, charming beach, only 25 meters long. It is nothing more than a space of coast, between the two sides of the mountain, sculpted by the river Schiato that passes through there coming from Agerola towards the sea.

It is also called Vallone, that is, a stretch of beach on the coast that represents a morphological feature very typical of the territory where it is located. The two sides of the mountain are joined by a bridge 30 meters high, on which the Amalfi state highway passes; it is also the way for those who want to visit Vietri Sul Mare and Positano.

Good to know…

  • It is on this bridge that the Great Diving World Championship takes place every year, one of the most famous events and the one that attracts the most visitors from all over the world to Furore.
  • Ah, if you want to go to the beach: GO EARLY! As it is tiny, it gets CROWDED easily!
  • It was proven, through some notary documents, that the oldest Church in the entire Amalfi Coast, is that of Furore, which was consecrated to St James because it is located in the Sancti Jacobi of Casanova.
