How to go to Pisa from Florence?

If you are in Florence for a few days, you should absolutely take the opportunity to make a round trip to Pisa. This will probably be the easiest way to do it, just because you only have 4 hours available and you can already do a super tour in Pisa. This is one of the tours that I consider unmissable! With its leaning tower is one of the most photographed tourist places in Italy, Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles – UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987) has real treasures! When purchasing tickets, you will have to decide which attractions you want to visit. And be sure to climb the Tower’s 300 steps! It is a truly unique experience! Come on?! “Ecco”, here are the 4 (four) likely options for going to Pisa from Florence.

1) How to go to Pisa from Florence? BY TRAIN

The first option to go to Pisa is for sure by train. To take the train, just arrive at Santa Maria Novella Railway Station. I advise you to buy tickets in advance, so that everything is more planned and, consequently, it optimizes your time. Buy tickets in advance and save 🙂 The trip lasts an average of 1 hour. Taking the train (any type of train) get off at Pisa Central Station which is located about 2 kilometers from Piazza dei Miracoli, where you will find the Tower of Pisa.

From Pisa Central Station you can go to:

On foot: If you have time, go by the Arno River, one more attraction of this tour, but you should consider at least half an hour of walking;
By public bus: Take the LAM Rossa (you must get off at the Via Cameo / Piazza Camin stop) or Line 4 (you must get off at the Piazza Arcivescovado stop);
By taxi: remembering that it can be a bit pricey.

Another option is the Pisa San Rossore Station (if you take the regional train): I recommend this option because you will practically descend less than 10 minutes on foot from the Tower of Pisa !! With the regional train the trip can take about 30 minutes more, but you will avoid wasting time when you arrive in Pisa, so it can be a good option!

Tips

If you have the energy to face the “marathon” you can also take the opportunity to visit Lucca. From Pisa San Rossore station, you can reach Lucca in 20 minutes. The beauties of Lucca are the walls, so I advise you to rent a bicycle and ride around the city and around the walls!
To return to Florence you will spend about an hour and a half, so if you want to make the two roudtrips in one day, I strongly advise you to buy tickets in advance, so that everything is well organized.

Advantages

Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace.
For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train.
For young people, for those who are backpacking.
And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry!

Disadvantages

For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL!
Having to adapt to the fixed schedules of the round-trip trains.
Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language.
Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or money you will spend extra on taxi once you reach your destination.
Another detail worth mentioning: get ready because, generally, the regional railway trains are very bad and sometimes very dirty, so don’t create high expectations! If you use the train, always choose the high speed train to avoid this type of problem.
One more thing: the time that is lost with all these trips, could be used to get more out of the city visited!

2) How to go to Pisa from Florence? WITH A GROUP TOUR

If you prefer to do things with more peace of mind and freedom of time you can choose to rent a car to take this tour, but in my opinion it is worthwhile only if you are going to visit Pisa and Lucca, if you are going to visit only Pisa, I think it is easier to do it by train! Among the first options, precisely because it does not have fixed times for sure the rental car is the ideal choice. It is always complicated to drive on roads that we do not know – it depends on person to person and the type of trip you are used to. This option is ideal if you like to drive! – IF YOU’RE DRIVING: DO NOT DRINK!

Pay attention!!!!

In addition, it is important to know that in tourist cities there are places (old town) where PARKING is NOT ALLOWED, and can only be used by residents! So it is important not to go to these places so as not to take unnecessary fines. In Italy it is common for them to tow the car or put that hubcap that blocks the vehicle’s exit! Be careful!

Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you take the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch pay attention! Don’t risk ruining your vacation!
It is not a suitable option for people who do not have the confidence to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory you can end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.
