1) Milan International Furniture Fair: Salone – A little about the Milan International Furniture Fair

The Salone del Mobile in Milan (Salone del Mobile.Milano) is a reference in the decoration, design and furniture sector, in addition to presenting innovations and equipment for the furniture industry.

This fair has been taking place since 1961 and arose out of Italy’s need to have contact with consumers and professionals in the field. With the aim of promoting the Italian furniture sector export, the objective was achieved through the quality of the Italian furniture industry: with raw materials of excellent quality, Italian furniture offers – in addition to a very characteristic design – a superior quality and is very sought after by architects, decorators and other professionals in the field. 2) Milan International Furniture Fair: Salone – Cosmit (Organizing Committee of the Italian Furniture Fair)

Cosmit Archello (Organizing Committee of the Italian Furniture Fair) was also founded in 1961 and organized the first edition of the Salone del Mobile, which was held at the Milan Fair. At the time, only 328 companies participated in the event in a modest area of only 11,860 m²: the fair was a success and they received more than 12,000 visitors, 800 of which came from abroad. However, it was only from 1967 onwards that the exhibition became international – in alternate years – and from 1991 onwards, it started to have annual editions. To give you an idea of the fair’s success, in 1991 the number of exhibitors had a considerable jump: it rose to 1,959, of which 258 were from abroad. The exhibition area has also been expanded to (impressive!) 144,000 m². The fair was visited by 147,000 visitors, 53,000 of which were foreigners.

In 1994, the Milan Salon reached another historic milestone: it managed to displace the celebrated Koelnmesse – the German furniture fair, which was until then the most important in the sector and, with this achievement, the Milan Salon became a world reference, gaining the status of ‘the most important fair’ in the home and furniture sector.

As mentioned, the Salone Internationale del Mobile takes place every year in Milan. Not long ago, the event was held in April, however, currently, the exhibition takes place in months predetermined by the organization and always takes place in conjunction with the Milan Design Week (Milano Design Week also known as the now famous Fuorisalone –). which in 2022 takes place between the 6th and 12th of June). This event was organized in the same area as the furniture salon fair, however, since 2005, it has had its activities in the new headquarters designed and built by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas; Fuorisalone also gained new spaces throughout the Lombard capital to facilitate access and promote new designer stores. To read all about the events of Milan Design Week, we invite you to read the post dedicated entirely to the subject Milan Design Week: the incredible Fuorisalone”.

3) Milan International Furniture Fair: Salone – What can I find at Salone del Mobile?

The name Salone Internationale del Mobile is almost symbolic, as the event also presents several innovations and trends for those passionate about everything that involves decoration, construction, appliances, materials and everything that involves matters of the sector (both in final and structural products). Concepts and prototypes are presented, studies on new technologies, lectures on how to bring innovations to the consumer’s daily life, etc. It is a complete event and anyone who thinks that the fair celebrates only famous designers and brands is wrong: democratic, the fair opens space for new names and brands (still!) little known, especially in the Italian market.

For those who like numbers: in its last in-person edition in 2019 (it is worth remembering that the event was NOT held in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021 an unprecedented online edition was held), the fair attracted 2,418 exhibitors, 35% of which were foreigners and 550 new designers at Satellite. Salon The Salon received more than 386 thousand people and broke the public record.

4) Milan International Furniture Fair: Salone – Edition 2022

As we said earlier, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Salone del Mobile was postponed to 2021, however, in 2021 the edition was fully online and celebrated 60 years of its first edition.

For 2021, the organizers also announced a new category at the show: Euroluce, which is entirely focused on the lighting sector and presents solutions, innovations and products related to the sector; In 2021, the following were also born”: EuroCucina/FTK (For the Kitchen Technology for Kitchens – Biennial), Workplace3.0, Salone Internazionale del Bagno (International Bathroom Salon),  Salone Internazionale del Complemento d’Arredo (International Decoration Salon), S.Project and Salone Satellite.

5) Milan International Furniture Fair: Salone – The proposals of the Salone del Mobile in Milan for 2022.

The theme of this year’s Salone del Mobile is environmental and social well-being, which has been named Design with Nature”. The special installation was designed by the renowned architect Mario Cucinella and was designed to celebrate (with some delay!) the 60th anniversary of the exhibition.

The environment will be installed in pavilion 15 of S.Projeto and will feature 1,400 square meters. As a highlight we will have a virtuous ecosystem that represents the future of life between human beings and nature integrated. This year the main fair will receive 2,000 exhibitors.

In numbers, and effectively, many companies in the Italian furniture sector have already entered the path of sustainability! In Italy 72% of companies already invest in the reuse of recyclable materials, while 44% use products that have been recycled and 67% of them are committed to proper procedures for product disposal. Another 49% companies have already reviewed their energy savings – making significant changes – and 37% of them already use renewable energy sources – such as solar energy. Made in Italy is humanizing itself! They no longer want to sell ‘only products’, they want to sell ‘styles’ of innovative creations! Is change possible? Yes! But it is necessary that everyone take part in this ‘current of good’: the government needs to offer incentives, consumers must better understand the companies’ proposal and everyone needs to effectively participate in this change: who supplies the raw material, who manufactures, who distributes and who consumes.

Salone Sattelite (which is holding its 23rd edition) will present more than 600 exhibitors with the theme Designing for our future selves / progettare per i nostri domani – Designing for our tomorrow (in free translation). The issue will invite us to reflect on design that promotes autonomy, comfort, movement, utility, interaction and safety for those involved. The main idea is to talk about sustainability and how it can be our great ally in the not too distant future. Focused on new talents, Salone Sattelite brings together schools and universities in the sector and has the participation of designers from 48 countries, of which five – Cyprus, Congo, Cuba, Nigeria, Qatar – arrive as newcomers to the edition.

For the special celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the famous Manifesti (posters) were made by Emiliano Ponzi, an Italian illustrator, highly celebrated in the field of design, born in Reggio Emilia (Emilia-Romagna), but raised in Ferrara and who currently lives in Milan. Emiliano is known for his elegant, precise and conceptual illustrations.

Women stand out!

In the 60th edition of Salone, women conquered their space. The exhibition will hold several meetings called Talk, so that the proposals presented there can be discussed; Chiara Alessi (designer, curator and writer) was invited to be the a mediator; Maria Cristina Didero (designer, curator and writer) and Beatrice Leanza (Executive Director of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology of Lisbon, MAAT) will also. The intention is to put the human being, the planet, beauty and design at the center of everything and find answers about the integration of different elements. Interesting, isn’t it?!

The fair edition will also cross the borders of the Fair, once again, to reach the city, and from the 7th of June, in the Sala delle Cariatidi of the Palazzo Reale, 11 values will be presented that are, since always, imprinted in the DNA of exposure. There will be 11 films made by 11 great Italian directors.

The Teatro alla Scala Foundation, as every year, further strengthens its ties with Milan and was the venue chosen for the opening of the event with a presentation by the Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Lorenzo Viotti, and a ballet with Roberto Bolle. The event takes place on June 5th. Also read Where to shop in Milan?
