About the Capitol

In the past, this place housed one of the most famous monuments in the Eternal City: the Tabularium. However, with the end of the ancient era, this region was abandoned, to the point of becoming a pasture for the goats, it was then that Pope Paul II Farnese decided to take the reins and value the place. In fact, the project for the square was the work of Michelangelo Buonarroti, who took care of everything (including the floor).

In the center of the square was placed the bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius (which at the time was in the San Giovanni Gate Square), today it has been replaced with a replica – the original is preserved in the Capitoline Museums.
