A little about Salerno…

Halfway between the mountains of the Sorrento Peninsula and the great plain of the Sele River is located the city of Salerno, an important center that the Campania region renowned for its ancient medical school, Europe’s first, which has a history spanning over a millennium. During the prosperous Norman rule, Salerno served as the capital of the southern region until 1127, when the court relocated to Palermo. Salerno, a city with an ancient history, is much more than just the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. From the castle to the promenade to the beach, there is a lot to see without missing a single attraction in this beautiful town on the coast of Campania. 1) What to do in one day in Salerno in Campania? VISIT ARECHI CASTLE

You can start at one of the main attractions, Arechi Castle. The view that opens up when you reach the top of the castle will leave you speechless. From the Castle of Arechi, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, you can enjoy a breathtaking view that goes from the tip of the Amalfi Coast to Agropoli. It still represents an authentic example of medieval architecture, still well preserved and appreciated throughout Italy. Nowadays, the castle is presented in all its majesty, surrounded by a beautiful park with nature trails immersed in the Mediterranean. Within a recently restored area, you will find an exhibition hall, a conference room, and a museum that brings together antique pieces such as coins and pottery.

How to get to the Castle?

You can get to Arechi Castle from the central station using public transport, a taxi, or a rental car. After visiting the castle, you can resume the discovery of Salerno, starting from its historic center, to go straight to the old heart of the city. The streets and shops follow each other on a path that will take you back in time.

A little about the Historic Center of Salerno

The lively streets of the old town will make you relive the times of the merchants, in the medieval era. You can walk through the narrow streets to admire and see the historic buildings, the houses, and the stones that yearn for the history of the city and that contrast with the modern city. To this day, the contrast, which seems to be in another city, is very strong. Let yourself be transported, therefore, by the frenetic pace of a day at the market, to the Duomo, the Mother Church of the capital.

2) What to do in one day in Salerno in Campania? VISIT THE DUOMO AND THE MONUMENTAL COMPLEX OF HAGIA SOPHIA

The cathedral was built in the Romanesque style in the eleventh century and then rebuilt several times. Inside the Cathedral of Salerno, a must-see is the crypt, where the three beheaded martyrs are kept, according to tradition: Gaius, Ante, and Fortunatus. Legend has it that by putting your ear close, you can hear the sound of blood flowing. Leaving the Duomo, continue the tour towards Piazza Abate Conforti, where the famous Hagia Sophia Monumental Complex is located.

The complex was built at the end of the 10th century and housed the Benedictine order dedicated to Hagia Sophia. After the recent restructuring, the complex is now used as a venue for events and exhibitions, in fact, year after year, it hosts exhibitions of internationally renowned painters and personalities such as Picasso, Mirò, Caravaggio, Warhol, and Pierluigi Nervi.

3) What to do in one day in Salerno in Campania? VISIT THE GARDEN OF MINERVA

From the Hagia Sophia Complex, continue along Via Torquato Tasso to reach the Garden of Minerva, probably the third most important thing to see in Salerno. The Garden of Minerva is a magnificent botanical garden that, in the twelfth century, belonged to the family of Matteo Silvatico, an eminent physician at the Medical School of Salerno. The Gardens of Minerva are distributed along the axis that runs from Villa Comunale to Arechi Castle and are really worth a visit, so do not miss it!

4) What to do in one day in Salerno in Campania? VISIT THE VIRTUAL MUSEUM AND BOARDWALK

If you are interested in the history of medicine, in the historic center there is also the Virtual Museum of the Salerno School of Medicine, an interactive museum suitable for everyone, even those traveling with children. Salerno, in any case, is, above all, its coast and its sea. What better place, therefore, during your visit to Salerno, than a stroll along the Promenade to take a walk and observe the landscape and life of the place? The Trieste Promenade (Lungomare) runs along the Tyrrhenian Sea for more than a kilometer, reaching the port of Salerno, all under the shade of large palm trees.

1) How to get to Salerno? BY PLANE

Salerno – Amalfi Coast Airport is not connected to regular flights, although it seems that something is about to change. In any case, there is Naples Capodichino Airport, which is just over an hour from Salerno. Several bus lines connect the airport to the center of Salerno.

Or take the A3 Salerno Reggio Calabria motorway and exit at Pontecagnano towards Fratte / Tangenziale, exit at Zona Industriale, and continue to Fratte.
