There are, however, less-known, but equally fascinating and evocative places that are worth visiting. We start this journey starting from the city of Trieste, the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, city of poets like Umberto Saba and James Joyce, which has a lot to offer and to see, historic places and delicious bars. Trieste has been part of Italy since 1920, but it still maintains the spirit of Central Europe. As it belonged to the Austrian-Hungarian kingdom, the city has always breathed a cosmopolitan air, certainly an aspect that makes it a very special center. The Attractions in Trieste

When you visit Trieste, among the many things to see that you cannot miss, are Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest sea square in Europe; on its three sides are the Luogotenenza Austriaca Palace, Stratti Palace, Modello Palace, seat of the Municipality of Trieste, Pitteri Palace, Vanoli Palace and finally the Regione Palace. The main peculiarity of the square is its location: on one side, the Gulf of Trieste and, on the other, palaces and public buildings of great historical importance. In the center of the square is the Fountain of the Four Continents, by sculptor Giovanni Battista Mazzoleni. In Piazza Unità d’Italia, the Molo Audace also begins, named after the first ship of the Italian Navy that entered the port of Trieste after the incorporation of the city into the Kingdom of Italy. Another interesting city to visit is Viterbo, in Lazio. It is a city of Etruscan origin, later conquered by the Roman Empire until it became a Longobard fortification in the Middle Ages. The city had its maximum splendor during the papal period, and still shows its characteristics, with the presence of noble palaces and several impressive churches. Precisely for this reason, it is known as the ‘City of Popes’. Viterbo was the papal seat and, for about twenty-four years, the Papal Palace housed and elected several Popes.

Today, Viterbo is a city that certainly offers a lot to visitors, a place that tells a piece of the history of Italy and that is worth staying during a stay in Tuscia Laziale. There are many things to see in this city, such as the Priori Palace, now the municipal seat, and the Cathedral of Viterbo dedicated to St Lawrence, situated in a splendid square that also includes the Papal Palace.

The city is particularly famous for the festival of La Macchina di Santa Rosa (“The Tower of Saint Rose”). The traditional and spectacular event takes place every year on the night of September 3rd in honor of the patron saint, who is carried on his shoulders by a hundred men, the Facchini di Santa Rosa (“porters of Saint Rose”), through the city streets. The third city we visit is the capital of Sicily, beautiful Palermo. Visiting Palermo is like reliving the past through different historical periods because on every corner there are monuments, churches and palaces that tell the city’s history over the centuries. All of them have left their mark on the history, tradition and art that make Palermo unique in the world. You can still breathe an intercultural atmosphere in the alleys of the historic center and in its markets, such as Vucciria, Ballarò and Capo. Its position has made it a popular destination for many people: Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Angevins and Spanish.

The Attractions in Palermo

The most important places and monuments of the city not to be missed are the Quattro Canti, called Teatro del Sole (“Theater of the Sun”), which divides Palermo into four areas: Kalsa, Seralcadio, Palazzo Reale and Monte di Pietà. Not far from there is the Pretoria Fountain, called Fontana della Vergona, the Town Hall Palace, known as Palazzo Pretorio or delle Aquile and the magnificent Cathedral. Now we are going to Basilicata to visit his jewel, the ‘city of stones’, Matera. We are talking about the capital of Basilicata, which is carved in stone between stone churches, hidden cisterns and breathtaking views. Speaking of Matera is not easy. A spectacular place, difficult to interpret and even more to explain to the traveler who has not visited it. After Basilicata, we continue to Calabria, one of the most famous regions for holidays by the Italian sea and this reputation is linked, in large part, to the beautiful beaches including Tropea, an authentic jewel considered the pearl of the coast of the Gods. This beautiful medieval village is located on a limestone rock overlooking the sea, about 60 meters high. The sand is white and the sea is sky blue; you eat very well and the views from the different terraces are unique.

Attractions in Tropea

Stromboli is visible from Tropea, the volcano looks very close when visibility is good. Considering Tropea exclusively as a tourist resort by the sea is reductive. Instead, we need to know it and live it in its traditions to appreciate it for real. There are also ancient noble palaces, now decadent, enveloped in the intense fuchsia color of boungaville and, after Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you arrive directly at the most beautiful terrace, Affaccio. We leave Tropea and its beautiful contours to go to another mandatory stop, which is Scilla, a hilltop town overlooking the sea in the province of Reggio Calabria. What are Scilla’s particularities? The sea with the legend of Scylla and Caribdis (the sea monsters that protected the Strait of Messina in Greek mythology) and its beautiful village, which is the Chianalea di Scilla.

Scilla’s Attractions

A very characteristic fishing village that is called ‘the little Venice of the South’. Chianalea is a mosaic of houses resting directly on the sea and divided by narrow streets. Due to this peculiarity, Chianalea di Scilla appears among the most beautiful villages in Italy, where you can taste fish-based dishes, with a mix between Calabrian and Sicilian cuisine. Still in Calabria, we will visit a magnificent city, Reggio Calabria. The city, located on the outskirts of Aspromonte, stands in a splendid position along the east coast of the Messina strait. The intense walk, much vaunted by D’Annunzio, represents the historical memory of Reggio Calabria with the monuments to the men who gave prestige to the city, the remains of the Greek walls and the Roman baths that date from the imperial period.

Reggio is also known as the ‘City of Bronzes’ due to the famous Riace bronzes, symbol of its origins in Magna Graecia, and is considered the ‘City of Bergamot’, a citrus fruit that grows only on a narrow coastal strip that extends from Scilla to Brancaleone . The main attraction of Reggio are the Riace bronzes and the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia, which houses them.

An early 20th century architecture characterizes the city center and features interesting examples of Art Nouveau, neo-Gothic styles, such as the Zerbi Palace, neoclassical style, such as the Francesco Cilea Municipal Theater and eclectic as the Mazzitelli Palace. In the urban context, in addition, there are some important buildings such as the Aragonese Castle, in the upper part of the city, and close to the Cathedral. Another important city is Vieste, which is magnificent with its limestone rocks and views of the Gargano Sea; considered the pearl of Puglia, once you get here you can take great routes by car. Vieste, today, is a popular seaside resort, loved for its wide sandy beaches, bays and beautiful sea caves, formed by the phenomenon of sea erosion.

The Attractions in Vieste

It is the most important and famous tourist center in Gargano, it is also an old fishing and agricultural center, whose most remote finds date back to the Bronze Age. Vieste has a picturesque medieval village that rises up narrow streets and consists of white houses, joined by very charming buttress arches.

It is dominated by a castle built by Frederick II in 1240, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea. In addition to the castle, the Cathedral of Vieste, a notable example of 11th century Apulian architecture, is worth a visit. We go to Sardinia, precisely Cagliari, to discover the medieval village within the walls, admire the Cathedral, the National Archaeological Museum and the Roman Amphitheater. Cagliari is the main and most populous city on the island, with glimpses of historic neighborhoods overlooking the sea, shopping streets and panoramic terraces, including the inimitable bastion of Santa Croce. The Attractions in Cagliari

The district of Castelo is located on the highest hill, characterized by ancient walls, today terraces, where nightlife comes to life, and by picturesque streets lined with noble residences such as the Regio Palace and the Città Palace, as well as the Cathedral of Saint Mary. 10) Which Italian cities you should visit before they become tourist? CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO

As a last place to see, we return to Lazio to visit the fascinating Civita di Bagnoregio. The wonderful village, which today is a small town where time seems to have stopped, is accessible only on foot along a reinforced concrete bridge built for the benefit of citizens and tourists who visit it from all over the world. Fantastic, magical and dreamy, the ‘dying city’ will capture you at first sight.

A little more about Civita di Bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio, in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, is actually made up of two cities located within walking distance of each other. Bagnoregio, the most modern city, and later Civita, the medieval village itself that perched 484 meters above sea level and, unfortunately, is in constant danger of losing its buildings due to the continuous sliding of the tuff spur of the base. It is worth a 3-hour tour of Civita di Bagnoregio.

Bagnoregio is located on a hill accessible only on foot via a long stone bridge that connects it to Bagnoregio (the village), the city where most inhabitants have moved for security reasons. It is certainly one of the most fascinating places to visit, an almost completely unspoiled Renaissance medieval city; before perhaps a more substantial breakdown completely damages accessibility, visit it!
