I will dedicate a tour to southern Italy using public transport; I have often talked about the wonders of the south, other times I explained how difficult it is to take a tour with public transport in some areas of Italy. Well, difficult does not mean impossible, so I will indicate a itinerary that you can do using the train (even if it is not a high-speed one) or the bus, through southern Italy. Our Itinerary

The tour that I will recommend will pass through Sicily, Calabria and Campania. It will be a twenty-day itinerary, twenty days in which, obviously, you will see a lot and, especially, you will get to know the best of the best and, for that, we will be forced to change hotels many times. First Tip

The first step you need to know: luggage. You will have to adapt to the tour, so if you want to do it, necessarily the first thing to know is that you will not be able to bring much luggage, I am not advising you to travel only with a backpack, but if you bring two large suitcases, be aware that the tour will be very tiring and you will end up enjoying nothing.

If you are the type of person who likes to travel with great convenience, then in this case I advise you to do this tour all organized with the hotels and transfers from the hotels to the railway stations and vice versa, so you will have no problem with the luggage detail.

Second Tip

The second step will be to check, when starting to organize your trip, if it is possible to buy your tickets online, so that you already have all the timetables scheduled, unfortunately I must anticipate that you will often find out that this is not possible, just as it is not easy to find out the schedules of intercity or regional trains.

That is because in these regions you will hardly find high-speed trains and also because often regional tickets can be purchased online only in the week prior to use. If you are unable to find out the timetables online, I advise you upon arrival in each city, immediately check the train departure times at the train station for the next stage of the journey. Often, from one city to another, they have few departures each day, so it is super important to follow my advice to be able to travel peacefully, O.K.?

About Trains in Italy

In this post I will not specify the train times, because these zones change the schedules a lot according to the tourist season, so you will always have to consult the website of Trenitalia, O.K.? Third Tip

When you arrive at each hotel, ask for the tourist map (usually all hotels have a free map of its city) and schedule the main visits for each day. In this post I am often considering one day for visiting the main cities, because some cities are small and can be visited peacefully in one day. I am also considering that you will make a schedule beforehand, buying tickets online (when necessary and to avoid queues at monuments), but in other cities, with one day, you will only be able to visit and superficially visit the Historic Center with its main monuments.

If you want to increase the number of days for the main cities, you can do it without any problems. Remembering that my goal is only to give you the idea of which cities are the best to visit and how to get from one city to another. You will decide if you make this script exactly the same, if you decrease or increase the number of days, or if you include or give up on other cities, that is clear, isn’t it?

1) 20 days Itinerary in southern Italy with public transport – PALERMO

1st day: You will buy your ticket arriving at Palermo Airport (Find out here How to get from Palermo Airport to the Center). 1st day: arrival in Palermo. Going to the hotel. I advise you to start after visiting the center, strolling through the Salotto buono, via Libertà, Piazza Teatro Massimo, etc.). Overnight in Palermo

2) 20 days Itinerary in southern Italy with public transport – PALERMO

2nd day: Monreale – Palermo – Continuation of the day in Palermo, I advise you to visit Monreale in the afternoon, located a few kilometers from Palermo and known as the “city of kings”, very famous for its wonderful Norman Cathedral, and then , continue the visit to Palermo. From Palermo there are several buses that go to Monreale. You can take the AMAT city bus number 109 that leaves from the square near the central station of Palermo, get off at Piazza Indipendenza and there take the Ast line that runs through Corso Calatafimi and will drop you off at Corso P. Novelli, more or less 200 meters from the Duomo, or take bus number 389 from Amat that will drop you off directly at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele (Cathedral Square), that is, directly at the Cathedral of Monreale. 3) 20 days Itinerary in southern Italy with public transport- AGRIGENTO

3rd day: Agrigento – Departure to Agrigento in the morning by intercity train or by bus, arriving in Agrigento and I advise you, as a first thing, to visit the famous archaeological park Valle dei Templi, which is the largest in the world and also a heritage site of UNESCO. La Valle dei templi: open every day: 09:00 am-07:00 pm, Admission: € 10.00. Most city buses (1, 1 /, 2, 3, 3 /) departing from Piazzale Rossellii pass through Valle dei Templi. TIPS ON AGRIGENTO?

4) 20 days Itinerary in southern Italy with public transport – SIRACUSA

4th day: Siracusa – Breakfast at the hotel. The trip to Siracusa will not be so simple, there are few train departures from Agrigento and even then you will have to make some connections, so I would also advise you to try to go to the bus station, to try to understand if they have direct buses from Agrigento to Siracusa, I tried to look for this information but I didn’t find it, so the best option will be to leave with the train, they have one that leaves at 01:00 pm and arrives at 05:40 pm (with 3 connections). There are other timetables but this is the best one. If you prefer to avoid this stress (I think Vale dei Templi is an important part of the itinerary) another idea would be to take Agrigento off the itinerary and go by train directly from Palermo to Siracusa (much easier and faster). Or the best solution, in my opinion, would be to rent a car and make this journey with a car. TIPS ON SIRACUSA?

5) 20 days Itinerary in southern Italy with public transport – SIRACUSA

5th day: Siracusa – Full day at leisure in Siracusa to visit its wonderful historic center and to discover its stunning archaeological area (the Greek theater, still in use for classical performances, the famous “ear of Dionysus” etc.). Parco archeologico della Neapolis in Siracusa: open every day: 9:00 am – until sunset, admission: € 10.00.

6th day: Siracusa – Siracusa is certainly worth staying two days !! So you can enjoy every angle of the historic center of Ortigia !!

7th day: Catania – After breakfast, departure by train (always check the time in advance) to Catania. Visit the historic center. Overnight in Catania. TIPS ON CATANIA?

8th day: Mount Etna – Catania – I advise you to hire at your hotel, one of the many excursions to discover Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe! Overnight in Catania. 9th day: Taormina – Departure to Taormina by train and full day to stroll in this super romantic city. Be sure to visit the main tourist attraction, the Greek theater, I guarantee it is worth a trip in Sicily just to see the theater, it is sublime! Overnight in Taormina. Teatro Greco di Taormina: open every day: 9 am – 7 pm, admission: € 8.00. NOTE: You can also choose to sleep in Catania (more economical) and go to Taormina the next day very early, by train, to spend the day and return. TIPS ON TAORMINA?

10th day: Taormina – Reggio Calabria – After breakfast, check-out and departure with the train to Reggio Calabria. Free day, I advise you in the morning to visit the archaeological museum, where are the famous “bronzes de Riace” statues, and in the afternoon to take the train (there are always several trains, but always remember to check the round trip times) to visit the Chianalea, known as the “Venice of the South”, which is on the list of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
