How to go to Capri from Rome?

Capri, the island of dreams !!! It doesn’t need much presentation, does it? If you are in Rome and have a day at your disposal, you can easily use that day to visit the famous island. This is a roundtrip that is really worth it. Of course, the ideal would be to take at least two days to get to know it, but if you don’t have that possibility, in 6 hours you will be able to see the main places of Capri and at least you will understand why this location is so dreamed by everyone !! Let’s find out now how to go to Capri from Rome? Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams!!! ALSO: see our “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

1) How to go to Capri from Rome? WITH THE TRAIN

The best option in my opinion, because you won’t have to stress about traffic, trying to figure out where to go, how to go and, obviously, if you take the high speed train you will get to Naples much faster. The good news is that a train departs to Naples almost hourly. The duration of the trip can vary from 1h10 to 2h20, according to the type of train you have chosen. Just go to Rome Termini Station and buy the ticket the day before or make a reservation in advance through the Trenitalia website.

Did you know?

Trenitalia is the main Italian company dedicated to the management of rail transport. Find out here What is the difference between trains in Italy?. Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot! To learn more, read our post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?“.

Arriving in Naples, how do I get to the port?

You can go to the port either with a public bus or a taxi. I advise against the bus, mainly, because you will have to understand where the bus is, and you will end up wasting time, it will take much longer to get to the port (wasting precious time) and the buses are often very crowded. It’s complicated here! So I advise you to take the taxi, they have a point at the exit of the station. In about 10-15 minutes, peacefully and without any discomfort you will reach the port where you can embark for the Island. !! Wonderful, isn’t it?

There are two different Ports, but they are close to each other:

  • Mole Beverello: you will take the aliscafi, that is, the speedboats that make the route with an average of 50 minutes;
  • Calata Porta di massa: you will be able to take the ferry boat which is slower, more economical, but the journey will take an average of 90 minutes, so I do not advise it, since you have little time and should optimize this time as much as possible, right?

Tip

  • It is always important before buying train tickets, to control the “aliscafo” schedules and vice versa, so that everything coincides, and that you do not waste a lot of time waiting in different places, it makes a difference for the roundtrip don’t be tiring, stressful and mainly for you can make the most of all the time available!

Advantages

  • Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace.
  • For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train.
  • For young people, for those who are backpacking.
  • And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry!

Disadvantages

  • For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL!
  • Having to adapt to the fixed schedules of the round-trip trains.
  • Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language.
  • Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or money you will spend extra on taxi once you reach your destination.
  • Another detail worth mentioning: get ready because, generally, the regional railway trains are very bad and sometimes very dirty, so don’t create high expectations! If you use the train, always choose the high speed train to avoid this type of problem.
  • One more thing: the time that is lost with all these trips, could be used to get more out of the city visited!

2) How to go to Capri from Rome? WITH A GROUP TOUR

In a group tour that offers, more or less, what a private tour offers, the difference is that the city tour has fixed days to carry out the tours. This type of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, as you will get a much better price, since the values can be shared with more people.

Group tours are a great alternative for those who do not want to spend so much and for those who are not used to travel alone and, therefore, prefer to be in a group, where there will be a person who will organize all the tours of the day! That way you don’t have to worry about nothing! Just being rested and willing to discover magnificent places!

Advantages

  • IDEAL option if you are alone, as a couple or with up to seven friends!
  • Save time that you would probably waste going to the train stations to catch the trains, or with transportation to get to the tourist places to be visited.
  • Visit more cities on the same day!
  • Spend less time on travel, taxis, trains and buses.
  • You can enjoy a “bicchiere di vino” (glass of wine) during lunch without having to worry about driving later :), since in Italy the laws are strict against those who drive after drinking!
  • You travel safely and comfortably!

Disadvantage

  • There is practically none! Just the issue of adapting to the program of the day, and meeting the tour schedule!

Important

  • Remember to always check customer testimonials before proceeding with the booking.

3) How to go to Capri from Rome? WITH A RENTED CAR

If you prefer to do things with more tranquility and freedom of time, you can choose to rent a car to take this tour. But read carefully all our tips and information for renting a car! If you are renting a car be sure to read our posts “Driving in Italy”! There you will find car itinerary tips, signage, rates, roads and much more!

How to get?

You will have to take the car and leave for the port of Naples, getting there, you will have to leave the car parked in one of the several parking lots. So before deciding for this solution, remember to calculate at least € 20.00 for parking. Consider an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes from Rome to the port, so between round trips at least 5 hours, it will obviously depend on traffic. I advise you to leave very early and return after 7:00 pm. Escape the peak hours in Rome (7:00 am – 9:00 am and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm).

Good to know!

Among the first options, precisely because it does not have fixed times for sure the rental car is the ideal choice. It is always complicated to drive on roads that we do not know – it depends on person to person and the type of trip you are used to. This option is ideal if you like to drive! – IF YOU’RE DRIVING: DO NOT DRINK!

Pay attention!!!!

In addition, it is important to know that in tourist cities there are places (old town) where PARKING is NOT ALLOWED, and can only be used by residents! So it is important not to go to these places so as not to take unnecessary fines. In Italy it is common for them to tow the car or put that hubcap that blocks the vehicle’s exit! Be careful!

How to understand what these places are? See this post that talks about it, but in any case another tip for those who are unsure about it, is to park a little outside from the center and take a walk to reach the area, spending a little more, by taxi or other public transport.

Benefits

  • If you are in a group with 4 or 5 people it will be a great option instead of taking the train;
  • Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
  • It is the best form of transport for people who are used to driving anywhere and it is easy to locate!
  • IF YOU DRIVE: DO NOT DRINK!

Disadvantages

  • Generally, those who drive cannot enjoy the beautiful view around, because you can’t take your eyes off the road!
  • Extra expenses with GPS (average price of € 15.00 – A DAY) so you don’t get lost so much.
  • Another thing, folks: to drive in Italy, as I have explained several times, is it essential to have an International Driver License AND your original driver license (in English) or with an official translation, ok?! If you don’t have these documents: DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ ALSO: DO I NEED THE IDL TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
  • Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you take the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch pay attention! Don’t risk ruining your vacation!
  • It is not a suitable option for people who do not have the confidence to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory you can end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.

4) How to go to Capri from Rome? WITH A PRIVATE TOUR

The last option is a private tour. The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time and using it to get to know other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your own hotel, which is important when you have little time available to visit a few places. In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the tourist spot you want to visit. And if you book in advance, you will often be able to have the driver in your own language, so you can easily ask for clarification about the trip.

This type of tour is ideal for VIPs and for small groups of friends or for the elderly. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those who travel. Basically, you should just enjoy the tour without the stress of attending train, subway, bus schedules, or worrying about where the main places to be seen are!
