How is accessibility in Venice for disabled people?

Many think that Venice is not a very ‘easy’ city to get around, especially for the physically disabled, but these ‘many’ (thank God!) are quite mistaken. The canals that cross the city and bridges that connect one ‘piece of land’ to another, are very well adapted for all visitors, including disabled people. Let’s go to our post of the day? How is accessibility in Venice for disabled people? Find out here about the special program for disabled people in Venice, you can learn all about this incredible project by clicking here! Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams!!! ALSO: see our “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

1) How is accessibility in Venice for disabled people? IN THE AIRPORT

Venice is formed by 121 islands interconnected by 435 bridges and, thanks to a very effective public transport policy and the changes made over the years by the municipal administration, Venice has almost 70% of the city’s historic surface accessible to people with disabilities. The excellent accessibility is already shown at Marco Polo Airport, which is, more or less, twenty kilometers from the Historic Center of Venice. Also read How much will I spend on a trip to Venice?

Airport Bus

To get there you can use line 5 of the ACTV bus, which has wheelchair accessibility. At the airport there is an entire structure for the disabled and it is possible to get on or off using the specially equipped lift for wheelchairs. Another important convenience is the assistance offered to passengers with disabilities. To have an even more exquisite service, inform your conditions at the time of booking the ticket so that, when you arrive, the team responsible for assistance is already ready.

2) How is accessibility in Venice for disabled people? ON THE TRAIN

If you are thinking of using the train, do not worry: since 2011 the Italian railway network has among its tasks a commitment to guarantee the accessibility of the stations to all citizens who depart, transit and arrive, with special attention to people with disabilities or people with reduced mobility. They provide the appropriate assistance services at the station and specific information for passengers, even offering a special map for the disabled to be able to get to know Venice in a comfortable and safe way.

Service Points

The service points are located in more than 270 stations managed by 14 blue rooms, reception and organization points, open every day, from 6:45 am to 9:30 pm. There you will find: reception at the station, accompaniment on board the departure train or the arrival train at the exit or entry at the station, guidance in case it is necessary to change trains to travel to another point in Italy, loan of the wheelchair to use it inside the station, up and down the train by forklift for wheelchair users, etc.

Blue Room

The so-called Blue Room (or the railway company’s contact channel) proposes ‘meetings’ every 30 minutes or upon request. It is a free service and it works very well! For those who are driving, it is possible to park in Piazzale Roma, in the municipal garage. For those who wish to leave their car on Tronchetto Island, you can park at Interparking Italia, which has about 3,500 covered parking spaces. From here take the ACTV water transport line 2 or line 6. In the parking lots you will find a lift and special spaces.

Important to Know

3) How is accessibility in Venice for disabled people? ON THE VAPORETTOS

Vaporettos are particularly well equipped for people with physical disabilities. Landings (over 55 points of embarkation and disembarkation on the Grand Canal and along the foundations of the historic center) are adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. Access is via an adapted elevator and uses a floating walkway, connected to a boat that facilitates boarding by anyone according to different tide levels. In short, this is the only fully accessible Italian public transport system!

Public water transport services in Venice are managed by ACTV and for information on timetables and routes, see the company’s website. All public boats are accessible, the only difference in accessibility, and for safety reasons, is when the tide is very high! But in this case, the services do not operate normally and are isolated cases.

Good to know

  • Vaporettos in Venice, on lines 1 and 2, the main lines of the Grand Canal, carry up to 4 wheelchairs at a time. Motor boats and speedboats on the LN line, which connects the city to the Lido in Venice and the coast of Cavallino – Punta Sabbioni, are accessible, but they only carry one chair at a time.

Useful Information – ACCESSIBILITY MAP

Venice also offers an accessibility map to visitors and gathers as much information as possible. On the map there are even indications of the degree of difficulty to access different places.

  • Green color: they are accessible by boat or special bridges;
  • Light green color: they also have great access;
  • White color: do not have access for disabled people.

On the back of the map you will find the location of the Municipality’s information counters, tourist terminals such as the railway station, airport, maritime station, parking lots, public transportation embarkation and disembarkation points, public restrooms, facilitated bridges, etc. To download the map, you can click here!

Hotels I recommend in Castello Area

Castello is the largest of all the “sestieri” (neighborhoods) and has an incredible waterside for good walks, in addition to being full of cafes, bars and shops. They are not cheap places to stay, but it facilitates access to the most famous tourist spots and, with that, saves on transportation, as it is possible to do everything on foot!

Don’t want to stay on the island? No problems! Search for Mestre, Campalto or Favaro Veneto, which are the mainland cities of Venice and offer excellent accommodation options. A little further from Piazzale Roma, about 20 minutes by water transport, they do not have magnificent views from the bedroom windows, but it is ideal for those who want to save on accommodation.

Tips

  • The tip to save A LOT is to book your hotel in advance.
  • As we also mentioned: beware of excess baggage! It is very complicated to get around with large volumes in Venice because of the bridges, stairs and narrow streets.
